Humans, generally, tend to have two eyes but the humans of Naruto sometimes have very special eyes. These so-called “eye techniques”, the Dōjutsu, give the users more power and possess some special abilities that can be utilized in battle. The Rinnegan, the Sharingan, and the Byakugan are the three great Dōjutsu and we are going to tell you which eye is the strongest.
The Rinnegan is certainly the most powerful among the three great eyes, as it grants the user the widest array of abilities. The Sharingan is somewhat more practical than the Byakugan, but their actual strengths depend on the user and their innate abilities.
Now that you know the answer, let us see what’s in store for you in the article. Firstly, we are going to explain each of the eyes and what they can do. Secondly, we’re going to compare each of the eyes individually and then determine which among them is the strongest. Finally, you’re going to find out whether the eyes can transform into each other and who had the strongest among them.
Rinnegan
The Rinnegan is the most revered and powerful of the three great eyes and appears as a strange optical conformation consisting of six concentric irises in a single pupil, with the conjunctiva entirely covered.
The Rinnegan offers its owner the use of all the alterations of the properties of the chakra and the possibility of using six different types of power: the puppeteer technique, a special version of the recall technique, the reading of the mind, the absorption of any magical technique, the ability to resurrect the dead and the control of gravitational fields, each associated with one of the six worlds of Buddhism.
Consequently, the owner of the Rinnegan is able to learn and potentially use all existing ninja techniques. It also allows for the summoning of the Diabolic Statue.
The first to possess this innate ability was the Hermit of the Six Paths, and due to his status as a mythological figure, the Rinnegan was long believed to be a mutation or a legend. In order to develop it, it is necessary to emulate the chakra of the Hermit of the Six Paths (as happened with Madara Uchiha).
Sharingan
The Sharingan, of the Uchiha clan, has the ability to predict, memorize and copy any magical, illusory, or martial art that is observed.
The Sharingan does not appear automatically at birth, but tends, instead, to manifest itself only when the bearer is subjected to strong emotional stresses, especially of a negative nature, which activate a special chakra in the brain of the Uchiha that acts on the eyes, transforming them into the Sharingan.
When the Sharingan is active, the eye takes on a red color, with the presence of a number of tomoe that varies from 1 to 3; the tomoe number indicates the power of the eye, giving the user an increasingly defined prediction of the opponent’s actions.
In addition to this, it is possible to imprison the victim inside illusions, the power of which directly depends on the user’s ability, as well as being able to see through high-level illusions and know how to overturn them as if nothing had happened.
Byakugan
The Byakugan is the innate ability belonging to the Hyuga clan and the Ootsutsuki clan, and gives the ability to look “beyond things”, crossing any obstacle with the gaze, to identify the flow of the chakra and the vanishing points, and to possess an almost 359° vision.
Using this ability, the Hyugas have developed the Juken style, through which they can attack the circulatory system of the chakra, emitting it into the opponent’s body.
The Byakugan is a capacity closely connected with the ninja’s eyes which, at the time of use, take on a real pearly color, with a subsequent dilation of the blood vessels on the temples
Rinnegan vs Sharingan: Which eye is stronger?
Comparing the power of the Dōjutsu is somewhat specific, as they are not necessarily identical in terms of their powers and their goals. The Rinnegan and Sharingan are an example, as the two are very, very different.
The Sharingan, as you could have read, grants the user the ability to copy others’ moves. It gives the user a better perception and the ability to replicate what it has seen.
The Rinnegan, on the other hand… well… the Rinnegan offers it all. Whatever you can think of as a shinobi, the Rinnegan will allow you to do it, if it’s possible to do with your chakra.
Based on this information, we have to conclude that the Rinnegan is certainly stronger than the Sharingan.
Rinnegan vs Byakugan: Which eye is stronger?
This is yet another example of how the eyes can be utilized for completely different purposes, which also illustrates the colorfulness of the Dōjutsu.
The Byakugan is a very elegant technique. It gives the user near-perfect vision and the ability to observe the chakra around them. Still, its properties don’t extend far beyond that and the Byakugan is thus severely limited.
Now, the Rinnegan gives the user an enormous set of powers, much wider and stronger than that of the Byakugan. The Rinnegan is the most powerful among the eyes and that makes this comparison quite easy.
Seeing how it gives the user a variety of different powers and how it is several levels above the Byakugan, the Rinnegan is the more powerful eye in this case.
Sharingan vs Byakugan: Which eye is stronger?
Now, this comparison is quite interesting, as the Sharingan and Byakugan have very similar powers and functions within the franchise. This made this comparison all the more difficult.
The main issue is that the Sharingan and the Byakugan grant the user practically identical powers, with the Byakugan offering just a bit more, but not enough to make a difference, at least not on a nominal level as it does when the Rinnegan is concerned.
This means that the Sharingan and Byakugan are too similar to properly distinguish, although we’d give the latter a small advantage nominally. But, the real value of these two techniques depends on the user.
Summarily, the true strengths of the Sharingan and the Byakugan depend on the users of the techniques, which makes it impossible to properly evaluate them on a general level.
Rinnegan vs Sharingan vs Byakugan: Which eye is the strongest?
The individual analyses from the beginning of the article, as well as the three individual comparisons, have given us enough information to properly answer this question and to determine the strongest eye technique among the great three (there are more eye techniques, of course, but these ones are considered to be the greatest).
To be direct and simple – the strongest “eye” among the three is the Rinnegan. The Rinnegan gives the user the largest number of abilities and it enhances the individual’s powers to a high level. The other two eyes don’t really compare that well to the Rinnegan, although they can come somewhat close with a skilled user.
Of the remaining two, we’ve already said that it’s difficult to determine the proper winner because their actual application depends on the user and their skills and abilities.
Can a Byakugan become a Rinnegan?
Now, this is a question that would be better phrased as – is it possible for a Byakugan user to awaken the Rinnegan? Well, as far as we know from the anime and the manga, it would be impossible for a Byakugan user to awaken the Rinnegan, simply because it requires two chakras that cannot be combined unless specific conditions are satisfied.
As we know from the manga, it has been revealed that the only way to awaken the Rinnegan would be to combine the chakra of Indra and Ashura, like when Madara, who had Indra’s chakra, implanted the flesh of Hashirama, who had Ashura’s chakra, to bring out the Sage of Six Paths’ chakra.
Theoretically, this opens up the possibility of a transformation, if Indra were to possess a Hyuuga clan member, and if the identity of Ashra were known to the world of the shinobi. But, since we’ve never found out Ashra’s identity and we’re probably not going to find it out in the future, it’s practically impossible.
Who has the strongest Dōjutsu?
Now, we have established that the strongest Dōjutsu is the Rinnegan, but there is another special Dōjutsu – the Rinne Sharingan – which was seen in the manga, the anime and one of the movies. The Rinne Sharingan, as the name suggests, is a combination of the Rinnegan and the Sharingan, i.e., a very powerful Dōjutsu that can defeat all the others.
This eye technique was awakened by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, who was its first and only actual user, as Madara Uchiha, who also had the power, held it only temporarily.
As for the strongest Rinnegan user, that is undoubtedly Hagomoro Ōtsutsuki, the so-called Sage of Six Paths, who is arguably the strongest character in the whole franchise.
