Robert Downey Jr. Might Have Already Hinted at Which Doctor Doom Variant He is Playing

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced that Avengers: Kang Dynasty will be retitled Avengers: Doomsday. They also revealed that Victor Von Doom will serve as the main villain of the Multiverse Saga. However, it came as a surprise that Robert Downey Jr. has been cast in the role of Doom.

Indeed, Robert Downey Jr. is making his return to the MCU, but this time not as Iron Man; he will be playing one of Marvel’s most legendary villains. Fans expressed concern over this decision, as RDJ is so closely linked to his portrayal of Tony Stark, resulting in mixed reactions overall.

In a recent interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, the actor confirmed his return to the MCU and shared details about which variant of Doom we can look forward to seeing:

Susan and I were sitting down with Feige at one point and he said, ‘It just keeps occurring to me that if you were to come back…’ and Susan was like, ‘Wait, wait, come back as what?’

Then we both realised over time that it was another thing that just disproves any doubt anyone could ever have about that guy, a very sophisticated creative thinker, about how can we not go backwards, how can we not disappoint expectations, how we can continue to beat expectations?

And he brought up Victor Von Doom. I looked up this character and I was like, ‘Wow.’ Later, Kevin goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right. Let’s get that right.’

Several theories are floating around about how RDJ will fit into the MCU, with some suggesting adaptations of storylines like Demon in an Armor and Infamous Iron Man. However, based on RDJ’s remarks, it seems he will mainly be taking on the role of just Doom.

This is encouraging news, as many fans speculated he might appear as a Doom variant of Iron Man due to the multiverse themes. By playing just Doom, Downey has the opportunity to create a new character rather than relying on his Iron Man identity, which could risk his legacy.
