Rumors: Jon Watts Won’t Return To Direct ‘Spider-Man 4′
Despite recent setbacks in the quality of Marvel Studios’ projects, the MCU still has an impressive lineup of upcoming movies. While there have been discussions about reducing the number of releases, Spider-Man remains a consistently lucrative franchise, drawing audiences to theaters. Currently, the MCU features three standalone Spider-Man movies, with a fourth installment confirmed by producer Amy Pascal several months ago. However, production was temporarily halted during the WGA Strike. Recent rumors suggested Jon Watts might return as the director for ‘Spider-Man 4,’ but a reliable source, MyTimeToShineHello, has allegedly confirmed that Jon Watts will not be directing the upcoming Spider-Man movie, according to posts on X.
Drew Goddard is once again emerging as the leading candidate for the director’s role.
Goddard is widely recognized for his work on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Angel,’ ‘Lost,’ and ‘The Cabin in the Woods.’ Within the MCU community, he holds a special place for his involvement in the ‘Daredevil’ Netflix series, praised for its faithful portrayal of the iconic Man Without Fear.
Although Goddard was previously rumored to direct ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ the opportunity went to Watts, who successfully directed all three ‘Spider-Man’ movies in the MCU. Watts, known for his dedication, even developed a collection of rare spiders during his tenure.
Initially considered for the ‘Fantastic Four’ project, Watts left in April 2022. Currently, he is engaged in the production of the 6th ‘Final Destination’ movie and is transitioning to Star Wars projects. In May 2022, it was disclosed that Watts is set to create and executive produce a Star Wars TV series, ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,’ for Disney+, inspired by Amblin and slated to premiere in 2024.
