‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ just released its first two episodes. The series is set during the High Republic era, about 100 years before the first movie in the franchise, ‘The Phantom Menace.’
While the High Republic era was previously explored in ‘Young Jedi Adventures,’ this is the first live-action adaptation of this time period. This opens up the opportunity to delve into Expanded Universe tales, especially those about Darth Plagueis, which were previously non-canon.
Darth Plagueis, a Sith Lord predating the Skywalker Saga, met his end before the events of ‘The Phantom Menace,’ slain by his apprentice Palpatine. Though their direct interaction isn’t feasible due to Palpatine’s age during the film, we may glimpse a younger Plagueis.
Plagueis was renowned for his mastery of the Dark Side and his manipulation of midi-chlorians, the microscopic entities granting Force sensitivity. His pursuit of immortality hints at his potential to prolong his life. While Palpatine claimed Plagueis possessed the ability to cheat death for others, ironically, he fell victim to his own apprentice’s treachery.
The novel ‘Star Wars: Darth Plagueis,’ penned by James Luceno, explores Plagueis’s backstory. Set 50 years before ‘The Phantom Menace,’ it offers insights into his life. Although many Star Wars novels were rebranded as Legends and made non-canon, some characters like Admiral Thrawn have been reintroduced. This suggests that elements from Plagueis’s story might find their way into the Star Wars universe, particularly given the novel’s timeframe, potentially linking to ‘The Acolyte.’
Plagueis, revealed as a Muun associated with the banking clan, rises as a Sith Lord after overthrowing Darth Tenebrous, his master, and taking Palpatine as his apprentice. He schemes to topple the Republic but dies before seeing his plans through, leaving Palpatine to continue his dark legacy.
Now, ‘The Acolyte’ has several avenues to explore. Leslye Headland’s promise of exploring deeper into the Rule of Two and the Sith leaves room for hope of encountering a younger Plagueis.
The series is set to introduce a new Sith Lord, as hinted in promotional materials and trailers. This Sith Lord is presumably the master of Mae or Osha.
If Mae or Osha attempts to ascend as a Sith Lord by eliminating their master, two outcomes emerge: If successful, Mae/Osha’s apprentice could potentially evolve into a young Darth Tenebrous, who later recruits Plagueis. Alternatively, if the mysterious figure is Tenebrous himself and Mae/Osha fails, the series might delve into Tenebrous mentoring a young Plagueis, also known as Hego Damask II in Legends. This narrative could lay the groundwork for the Sith lineage leading to Palpatine and the eventual downfall of the Jedi and the rise of the Empire.
