‘Supergirl’ Star Jason Momoa Just Had a Shirtless Desert Rock Show and It Was Exactly What the Internet Needed
With ‘Supergirl’ arriving in theaters later this month, Jason Momoa has been impossible to ignore, and not just because he’s about to debut as the scene-stealing intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in James Gunn’s DCU. The actor has spent the past several months making it abundantly clear that his off-screen life is just as untamed as anything he brings to a superhero set, and his latest move is proof of that.
ÖOF TATATÁ, the rock trio featuring Momoa on bass alongside guitarist and vocalist Mike Hayes and drummer Kenny Dale Borill, has been turning heads with its explosive live sets, covering heavy-hitting classics from Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, and Jimi Hendrix. Billing themselves as a rock and roll powerhouse, the group’s gigs have fast developed a reputation as must-see events.
The latest chapter came when TMZ caught footage of Momoa going fully shirtless for a sound check ahead of the band’s limited West Coast run. The actor ditched his shirt while joining ÖOF TATATÁ for a rehearsal at The Red Dog in Pioneertown, deep in the California desert, turning what was supposed to be a routine sound check into its own impromptu mini-show for a crowd that gathered to watch. Later in the day, he threw a shirt on for the actual set and treated fans to some Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The appearance also marked the triumphant return of his signature beard, which had made headlines after a dramatic shave shocked fans last year. The whole scene felt like peak Momoa, equal parts rock star and force of nature, leaning fully into an aesthetic he has clearly committed to for the long haul.
Momoa has spoken candidly about what drives him to keep performing live, explaining that playing with the band offers him something acting simply cannot.
“It gives me an opportunity to have two hours to really be scared,” he told PEOPLE. “I’ve never done theater, I’ve never been on stage, so it’s another aspect that I’ve never gotten into.” He added that the vulnerability of having no retakes keeps the experience thrillingly real: “It’s so exposed. And it’s not something that if I mess up, it’s just like, ‘Oh.'”
That same fearless energy is exactly what fans are hoping he brings to Lobo, the ruthless intergalactic mercenary and bounty hunter he is set to play alongside Milly Alcock in the DCU, with the film hitting theaters on June 26. DC Studios co-head Peter Safran has spoken warmly about Momoa’s enthusiasm for the character, noting that the studio always prefers actors who volunteer for a role rather than simply being recruited, and that Momoa was very much a volunteer.
The actor has long made his obsession with the character known, saying “So Lobo was, I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.'” Between a shirtless desert shred session and a universe-hopping antihero debut just weeks away, it seems like life is treating Jason Momoa very well right now, and if you have thoughts on whether a rock-and-roll Lobo is the energy the DCU needed, the comments are waiting for you.
