When Does The Book Of Boba Fett Take Place?
The Book of Boba Fett is hitting the small screens as we speak, and Star Wars fans worldwide are rejoicing the new entry in the vast Star Wars cinematic universe. After such awesome two seasons of The Mandalorian – and with a third one coming out shortly after The Book of Boba Fett, many fans aren’t sure when The Book of Boba Fett takes place?
The Book of Boba Fett takes place shortly after the finale of The Mandalorian Season 2, roughly around 9 ABY, or five years after Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. It’ll explore Boba Fett’s return on Tatooine, where he aims to take over Jabba the Hutt’s business and the galaxy’s underworld.
Here’s everything else you need to know about The Book of Boba Fett before the show launches, and you sit in front of the screen to watch it, including the timeline, the number of episodes, the plot, and more.
When Does The Book Of Boba Fett Take Place?
The Book of Boba Fett was first teased as a post-credit scene at the end of The Mandalorian Season 2. Fans were confused, thinking it would be a third season to the epic show focusing on Din Djarin and Grogu. However, The Mandalorian’s creator, Jon Favreau, explained later that the show is entirely separate, although it’ll play into the same narrative and timeline.
So, when will The Book of Boba Fett take place? Well, right where The Mandalorian’s second season ended. That’s around 9 ABY, or five years after the Return of the Jedi, where we saw Boba Fett take a tumble into the Sarlacc pit but somehow survived.
And, no, it won’t replace The Mandalorian Season 3. Mando’s TV show will continue, as the filming ended a while ago, and post-production is already in progress. Where or when will the events of The Book of Boba Fett finish remains to be seen, but it’ll definitely play into the narrative and continue Fett’s story right where we left off.
How Many Episodes Will The Book Of Boba Fett Have?
The Book of Boba Fett will have seven episodes as things stand right now. The first one premieres on December 29, 2021. Like The Mandalorian, each episode will present a chapter in the story, from Chapter 1-7.
Unfortunately for fans who love binge-watching, the episodes won’t come out all at once. Instead, each episode will come out a week apart, starting with Chapter 1 on December 29 and finishing with Chapter 7 on February 9.
It’s unclear if the spin-off series will have a second season, seeing that we’re soon getting Ahsoka and The Mandalorian Season 3 that’ll likely play into the same narrative.
What Will The Book Of Boba Fett Be About?
The Book of Boba Fett is a spin-off to The Mandalorian series (many fans call it Season 2.5 of the Mando series), and it’ll pick up right where things ended in the second season of Din Djarin’s show.
Boba Fett and Fennec Shand returned to Tatooine, where Bib Fortuna claimed Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire after Jabba was killed. Well, it didn’t last long, as Boba blasted him to death as soon as he saw him. That’s where The Book of Boba Fett starts. Here’s the official description of the spin-off series:
“The Book of Boba Fett, a thrilling Star Wars adventure, finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.”
That explains a lot about the series – Boba Fett and Fennec Shand will be back to claim the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt. We’ll certainly see a whole lot of bounty hunting, galactic travel, and adventures filled with action. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see Boba return to the Sarlacc pit to say hi to his good old friend.
Jokes aside, some reports said we’d see flashbacks from Boba’s life, so I really hope we’ll get a better explanation on how the bounty hunter escaped the dreadful Sarlacc after Han Solo accidentally sent him in its mouth.
How Will The Book Of Boba Fett Play Into The Star Wars Cinematic Universe?
With all that being said, we can piece things together to determine how will The Book of Boba Fett play into the Star Wars cinematic universe. We know it’ll take place right after The Mandalorian Season 2, but we don’t know where it’ll end.
Seeing that The Mandalorian Season 3 is coming in late 2022, just like the new spin-off series, Ahsoka, I believe that the events of the Boba Fett spin-off series will end just before The Mandalorian Season 3 event begin. There may be some overlapping (hoping for a Pedro Pascal cameo in The Book of Boba Fett), but the narratives will play into each other.
In other words, The Book of Boba Fett will bridge the gap in the new era of the Republic, building on the tension between the Imperial and Rebel Alliance. However, there’s more – it seems that everybody took notes from Marvel and the MCU.
According to Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, the four Star Wars shows currently in production (The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Rangers of the New Republic) will lead to a culmination with a big event that’ll have them connected.
It’s unclear what that event will be, but I believe everything leads to the liberation of Mandalore from the Imperial forces.
We can speculate all we want, but for the time being, let’s just sit back and enjoy the show. If we judge by the trailer, it will be a great one.
