When we think about the popular comic universes, the first thing that comes to our mind are Marvel and DC, who, at this point, almost have a monopoly on superheroes and other superpowered characters. Image Comics, however, also have a pretty expansive and popular universe that especially rose to popularity in recent years due to ‘Invincible’ comics and their various adaptations. Some characters, however, like Firebreather, have remained in the mainstream shadow for the most part, and today, we’re going to discuss him and his possible connection to the larger ‘Invincible’ Universe.

Firebreather is a superhuman dragon hybrid fathered by a villain

The story of how Firebreather came to be starts with Belloc, the King of Monsters, a kaiju villain from Image Comics. He impregnated a woman named Margaret during a rampage through an American city. Their son, Duncan Xerxes Absalom Wu Fan Cassius Draco Draconus Quetzelcoatz Gondwana Mjarl Khan Belloc-Rosenblatt, is a half-human/dragon hybrid and would later, based on his powers, adopt the alias “Firebreather.” Duncan faced challenges in fitting in at Herbert Hoover High School due to his unique appearance and encountered obstacles from the principal and a bully named Troy Evans. Despite difficulties, he forms friendships, especially with a girl named Jenna.

Duncan undergoes rigorous training from his father, Belloc, over weekends to harness his power. At school, Troy tries to set Duncan up by hiding a gun, leading to a violent reaction. Duncan reflects on his emotions and struggles with his place in the human world. Upon returning home, he finds it destroyed, and Margaret is missing. Duncan tracks down his mother, confronts a monster kidnapper, and engages in a brutal fight. Belloc intervenes, revealing that he orchestrated the kidnapping as a test. Duncan threatens Belloc and flies away, leaving his father proud.
