Witcher: Blood Origin is soon being released on Netflix. While the show managed to keep the air of mystery around it, we do know that it serves as a prequel to the main series and is set in a world before humans arrived on the Continent. Considering that the events of Blood Origin will be set in a completely different time than the events of the main series, there are plenty of new characters introduced. One such character is the heir to the throne of Xin’trea, Princess Merwyn. In today’s post, we’re going to focus on this mysterious character whose motivations are, for now, unrevealed. Princess Merwyn is a royal heir to the elven kingdom of Xin’trea. Her role is rumored to be an important one but, for now, remains a mystery. What we do know is that Princess Merwyn is dissatisfied with the perception others have of her and likely will attempt to change this as the series progresses. Princess Merwyn will be portrayed by Mirren Mack, a 25-year-old actress best known for her roles in Sex Education and The Nest.

Who is Princess Merwyn in Witcher: Blood Origin?
We know that Blood Origin will serve as a prequel to the main series and will be set in the same universe. The series will likely portray the events that led to the Conjunction of Spheres, which in turn led to human arrival on the Continent. Prior to the arrival of humans, the Continent was mostly inhabited by so-called “elder races,” elves, dwarves, and gnomes. Having said that, the main storyline itself will follow the stories of a band of unlikely heroes called seven outcasts.Â
Seven outcasts are elves that belonged to the different elven clans; most of those clans were engaged in conflict with one another over their long history.
So far, we’ve been introduced to several major characters related to those clans, such as Éile from the Raven Clan, ScÃan from the Ghost Clan, and Fjall Stoneheart from the Dog Clan. But this society separated into clans had its royal family as well, and this is what leads us to the character of Princess Merwyn.
Princess Merwyn is a princess of Xin’trea, one of the strongest and most important elven cities. Xin’trea will, over the ages, fall into ruin and eventually be taken over by humans after their arrival and conquest. But for now, during the events of Witcher: Blood Origin Xin’trea is still a pinnacle of elven excellence at the height of elven power. Xin’trea is presided over by the royal family, which Princess Merwyn is a part of. Even though she was born into a life of privilege, a monarchy, she is still a part of a patriarchal society and only valued for her looks and what her potential heirs can bring to the table.
The creator of the series Declan de Barra described it best:
“Merwyn is a princess. Because of the part of the Continent she lives in, she lives in a patriarchal monarchy. She’s born into a monarchy, but all she is really is a vessel for birth and a piece to be traded in the future. It must be a horrible existence growing up, knowing from birth that you’re nothing but a broodmare and something to be sold by the people that you think love you. But she has a fire in her — she wants more in life”
It is possible we will witness Princess Merwyn’s journey from a royal “eye candy” to a fearsome leader, and it is unclear whether her impact on the world will be a good or bad one.
The characters of blood origin all come with their own tragic and intriguing backstories, and each character is in search of redemption in one way or another or freedom. It’s possible that the character of Princess Merwyn will look for freedom and ways through which she can prove herself to be something more than a mere “broodmare.”
Who is Mirren Mack the actress behind Princess Merwyn
Mirren Mack was born in Stirling, Scotland. She comes from an acting family, as all of her close family members are, in one way or another, tied to the industry. Her father, Billy Mack, is an actor, with her mother, Callan Mack, serving as a drama tutor. Likewise, Mirren’s younger sister Molly is an actress herself.
Her education was mostly oriented toward refining her skills as an actress. She attended the Dance School of Scotland’s Musical Theatre, eventually progressing to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Arts.
Her major roles include Sex Education, The Nest, and the upcoming Witcher: Blood Origin, which shows the potential to be her biggest role yet.
Summary
Princess Merwyn is a part of the royal family of Xin’trea. Despite living in a monarchy and having all sorts of privileges growing up, she is unhappy and dissatisfied because people see her as a simple broodmare and nothing else. Her character will most likely experience growth, and we will see her transition from a princess to a warrior, albeit it is unknown if she will serve as an antagonist in some form. What we do know is that Princess Merwyn will be portrayed by a 25-year-old Scottish actress Mirren Mack and the first character preview looks stunning.
