Why Is Ymir’s Jaw Titan Different in Attack on Titan?

If you’re a fan of Attack on Titan, you know that the Titans themselves are among the most intriguing characters of the whole franchise. They come in different shapes and sizes, and while the owner of a single Shifter Titan can change, the physical appearance of that Titan changes only slightly with each new owner. But Attack on Titan wouldn’t be what it is if there weren’t some exceptions to this rule. One of them is Ymir’s Jaw Titan, which looks significantly different than the other iterations of the Jaw Titan, and we are going to explain why that is.

What does the Jaw Titan look like?

Porco Galliard’s Titan, the Jaw Titan, has a piercing stare and extremely light brown eyes surrounded by gaping flesh, giving him a ferocious look. Prominent eyebrow arches dominate the whole. As its name suggests, its jaw represents an important part of its physiognomy. He is very developed and is covered with armor that goes up to his lower lip.

He also sports a beard that covers his chin and the rest of his jawline. The opening of its mouth is partially covered by the armor, which forms a row of serrated teeth. As for his hair, it is long and the same color as his beard.

When in the possession of Ymir, the Jaw Titan has long, black hair and very sharp teeth. Her eyes seem smaller than those of other titans. She measures 6 meters in this form. Fans tend to call her the “Dancing Titan” because she seems very hard to catch and is very skilled at aiming for the necks of other Titans. Her hair in this form is quite voluminous.

In the possession of Marcel Galliard, the Jaw Titan has brown colored hair and beard. Much like Porco’s titanic form, he moves on all 4 limbs, possesses armored fingers and teeth, and has his hair styled upwards.

As you can see, the appearance of the Jaw Titan has changed over the years, but the only iteration of the Titan that was significantly different from the rest was Ymir’s iteration. Why? Well, while Isayama never properly explained that we think we might have an answer for you. Namely, it is a known fact that the Nine Titans have been altered over the years as their owners changed. This means that the Nine Titans we see in the present do not look like their original forms in the past.

Ymir’s Jaw Titan seems to be what the Jaw Titan actually looked like, but that has changed over the years due to the various modifications imposed on the Titan. We’re not certain that this is the correct answer, but based on our knowledge of the manga, we’re quite certain about it.

The history of the Jaw Titan

The Jaw Titan, one of the Nine Titans, was born after the death of Ymir Fritz. During the 1,700 years that Eldia ruled the Earth, the Jaw had one of eight Eldian clans warring. Seventeen centuries later, seven of the Nine Titans passed into the hands of Marley after the Great War of the Titans, including the Jaw Titan.

Decades later, the Jaw Titan was passed on to the warrior Marcel Galliard. He and the other carrier warriors participated in Marley’s territorial expansion war around the year 843. Thanks to its great agility, the Jaw Titan was mainly used to neutralize enemy artillery. Two years later, in the year 845, Marley began “Operation Paradis” and sent Marcel, Reiner Braun, Bertolt Hoover, and Annie Leonhart across the ocean to the island of Paradis.

However, sometime before the attack on the Shiganshina District, while the group was camping, a Titan appeared, and a shocked Reiner was about to be captured until Marcel pushed him away. Marcel was caught instead of Reiner and was eaten alive while his comrades escaped.

Ymir, seeking a new life, entered the territory protected by the walls after the fall of Wall Maria and survived by stealing what she could. During one of her robberies, she entered a Wall Cult chapel and heard the story of “Krista Lenz” and her plans to enlist in the military. Eager to meet her for personal reasons, in the year 847, Ymir joined the Troop of Recruits of Cycle No. 104.

During training, Ymir, Krista, and Daz form a group to tackle cold weather training. During this, Daz is injured in some way and Krista insists on taking him to the shelter despite Ymir’s insistence to abandon him. However, seeing Krista’s determination, Ymir decides to help her and sends her to the shelter alone while she uses the Jaw Titan to quickly bring Daz to her base.

When Krista questioned her on how she had managed to bring him here on her own so quickly, Ymir agreed to tell her her secret on the condition that when the secret of her titan power was publicly known, she would return to living under Krista’s control.

Who ate Ymir’s Jaw Titan?

During the two months after the Clash of the Titans Arc, Ymir is sent to Marley. At some point after or during the year 850, the exact date is not known, Porco Galliard is chosen to inherit the power of the Jaw Titan from Ymir.
