Boruto: Naruto Next Generation is an ongoing sequel to the successful Naruto and Naruto Shippuden series. The main character Boruto is Naruto’s son, trying to find his way in the seemingly peaceful Ninja World. Boruto is burdened by his father, a living legend and Kage of Konohagakure. With the Boruto manga and anime happenings, many fans started speculating if Boruto would ever become Hokage and follow in his father’s footsteps. Let’s find out!

Throughout the manga and anime, Boruto expressed disdain for Hokage position. His resolve only strengthened when he met Sasuke Uchiha and realized he was in the shadows, always protecting his father. Boruto also told Sarada that he wanted to become a ninja like her father and follow his own path, not the one his grandfather and father accomplished – he wanted to have his own ninja way. Boruto’s choice is also closely connected to Sarada’s wishes to become Hokage – Boruto wants to protect and keep Sarada safe when she becomes the leader of Konohagakure.

We will discuss this topic more by mentioning why Boruto’s relationship with Naruto impacts his desires, what Boruto wants to be, and if he will ever follow in his father’s footsteps. If you are interested, stay with us until the end.

Will Boruto become Hokage?

Boruto Uzumaki is a really interesting character if we analyze him further. Contrary to popular belief, Boruto is far from a whiny and boring character, which some fans accused him of when the manga first started its release. Boruto is deeply hurt by his father, Naruto, who chased his dreams for most of his life. Frankly, Naruto’s life is one of the most tragic stories of the Naruto series, and the boy had to work really hard for what he is today.

After finally finding his place in Konohagakure, Naruto lost his closest friend Sasuke to revenge and greed and immediately started chasing him and trying to get him back to Konoha. He fought many powerful enemies, lost many dear people, and suffered injuries that most would die of. But Naruto tried, and his will and love for others dictated his life path, which led him to become the savior of the Ninja World and a legendary shinobi.

Boruto tells Sarada he doesn’t want to become a Hokage.

With the help of the other four Shinobi Countries, Naruto established peace in the Ninja World and ensured that newer generations of shinobi didn’t suffer as he did. Naruto eventually married Hinata, and two of them had two children, Boruto and Himawari. Boruto strongly resembles his father but has a calmer demeanor and is much smarter, which he got from his mother.

Many people predicted Boruto becoming a better shinobi than Naruto and eventually taking over as Hokage. Of course, not everything is easy, and keeping the Ninja World took away time with his family. As expected, Hinata, like a good wife, understood immediately that her husband would be stuck in the Hokage Tower a lot. Himawari was the same, but she took over from her mother much more than Boruto, who absolutely hated that Naruto was absent.

Boruto obviously loves his father and even idealizes him, as seen before Naruto became Hokage. However, when the boy realizes that his duty of Hokage is taking his father “hostage” in his office, Boruto immediately starts hating the role of a hidden village leader. Of course, as in true Uzumaki style, Boruto started vandalizing Hokage Mountain, particularly his father’s face, and doing chaos all over Konohagakure.

People wondered why is that the case and why is Boruto so spoiled. Well, he just wanted his father’s attention, and the only way to get it was to cause chaos everywhere because Konoha and the rest of the Ninja World started being under a lot of looming danger. Ōtsutsuki started causing trouble for everyone, and suddenly, no one was safe anymore.

Boruto truly realized his father’s sacrifice and job as a leader when Momoshiki attacked Konoha during Chūnin Exams – Naruto handed himself over to protect everyone. In the meantime, Boruto met Sasuke Uchiha, a mysterious and aloof father of his teammate Sarada and Naruto’s best friend. Boruto immediately started admiring Sasuke Uchiha and his skills that were “out of this world.” The young boy soon realizes Sasuke’s importance to Konoha and his father and decides to ask Uchiha to mentor him. Of course, Sasuke becomes Boruto’s mentor, and Boruto decides to follow in his mentor’s footsteps.

Boruto reveals to Sarada that he doesn’t want to become Hokage and follow the already-established path of his grandfather and father – he wants to follow his own ninja way and become a shinobi as strong as Sasuke.

When will Boruto become Hokage?

It seems that Boruto will never become a Hokage and follow his father’s path. This is strange because many fans criticized Boruto’s character as boring and predictable regarding his personalization. Of course, that is valid criticism because Kishimoto likes to recycle the Naruto series’ storylines. However, Boruto shows character development and maturity that will be significant in the future of the Boruto series.

Boruto’s decision to not become Hokage doesn’t stem only from admiring Sasuke and deciding to follow a different path from his father – it seems that Boruto wants to protect Sarada Uchiha. Her motivation stems from her admiration of Naruto, whom she admires, both in leadership and shinobi. From a very early age, Sarada wanted to become a Hokage, which Boruto sometimes mocked because of his hate towards the position.

Will Boruto Become Hokage? (& When Will That Happen?)
Boruto vows to Sarada he will protect her when she becomes a Hokage.

However, throughout the series, we see Boruto seeing Sarada’s determination for the role and her motivation that fuels his desire to become what he wants. He vows to Sarada that he will follow a different path from his father, become her protector from the shadow, and simultaneously become the strongest shinobi ever.

Boruto shows here that he is smarter and more mature than his father; Naruto was when he was the same age – although it did help that Boruto had much better support from his peers and a family that always was behind him to catch him when he fell.

Boruto won’t become Hokage, which is okay – not everyone needs to want to become one.
