Mahito’s story from Jujutsu Kaisen is undoubtedly interesting, and there are many things we could say about him, but in this article, we are going to focus on a more trivial matter, as we are going to discuss one of Mahito’s nicknames in the series. Namely, the protagonists who have faced Mahito in the series have nicknamed him “Patchface,” which is what he was known among them. In this article, we will tell you about Mahito and why he is called “Patchface” in the series.

The nickname “Patchface” was given to Mahito early on when he faced Yuji and Nanami. The reason is obvious – his face and whole body are covered in patches, so they gave him that nickname, which is pejorative and is a manner of mocking the villain due to his appearance. Mahito could probably remove the patches if he wanted to use his Innate Technique, but they are his trademark, so he probably did not do it because of that. And that is the story behind Mahito’s nickname in the series.

The rest of this article will focus on Mahito as we explain his story and his appearance in the series. Mahito is, of course, a very important villain, and although the Shibuya Incident will also end his run in the series, his impact is definitely significant, and people are quite interested to know more about him. This motivated us to write this article, and we hope you’ll find everything you’re looking for in this article. Of course, the article will also contain a significant amount of spoilers, so be careful how you approach certain parts of the article.

Mahito is called “Patchface” because… well… his face is covered in patches, as is the rest of his body

Let us start with Mahito’s story so that you know why the guy is so significant for the plot of Jujutsu Kaisen. Mahito is the leader of a group of powerful special-level curses whose goal is to exterminate the human race and create a world inhabited only by curses and a curse born of hatred between humans. Mahito is sadistic immature, and loves to play with human emotions, even when his life is in danger; his personality is quite childish in that aspect.

He believes that life has no value or meaning; therefore, everyone should do what they want. This mentality stems from his ability to sense and manipulate souls, which causes him to see the soul, and by extension, the heart, as nothing more than an object. His cursed technique, called Idle Transfiguration, allows him to manipulate the souls of himself and others, changing the body’s shape. This a pretty gruesome technique, as we are about to explain.

This allows him to transfigure the bodies of his victims into monsters that serve him, heal his wounds, transform his appendages into weapons, and grant him an unlimited variety of other possible transformations. On top of that, Mahito is an exceptionally skilled fighter and is enormously quick. These abilities, when combined, make him one of the most dangerous villains in the whole series.

Interestingly enough, just like Jogo and the other members of his group, he really believed in the cause, and there was a sort of twisted friendship between them (the group included Jogo, Hanami, and Dagno as well), which was confirmed when Mahito was sad and shocked to hear that Gojo had exorcised Hanami. During the Shibuya Incident, he is defeated by Yuji with Aoi Todo’s help, but before the two of them manage to kill him, he is absorbed by Kenjaku via Geto’s Innate Technique, thus becoming a part of Kenjaku’s cursed spirit arsenal.

As you can see, Mahito’s story is quite fascinating. While it does end in a very twisted way, as Kenjaku basically “ate” him, he is still one of the most notorious characters in the series, most notably because he is directly responsible for the death of Nanami, as well as for Nobara’s condition, not to mention the countless of humans that he turned into monsters.

This story explains why the protagonists (and fans) would hate Mahito and why they would come up with a mock nickname for him, as he was never really respected by anyone due to his vile nature. And that much is clear. But why “Patchface”? The nickname obviously concerns Mahito’s appearance, so let us see how and why.

Mahito, unlike other curses, has a completely humanoid appearance, which is quite rare among actually cursed spirits, as they always look grotesque; not to say that Mahito doesn’t, but he does look like a human, more or less. He possesses a slim and tall body; however, he can change the entire structure of his body and transform it into whatever he wishes.

His skin tone is light and somewhat pale. His hair is blue-gray, although he was also depicted with purple colors; it is long and is divided into three strands held with a band before reaching the end of her hair. His eyes are of different colors; the right one is light, and the left one is dark. In the anime, the right one is represented in gray, and the left one is in blue.

His characteristic clothing consists of a black shawl with patterns of messy lines that are divided into three pieces on the left sleeve, accompanied by matching pants. In the anime, this clothing is represented in all blues and black, and the shawl has a pattern of lines that join together to form squares. He wears white shoes with black designs.

He can reveal his true form as a curse when using the Instant Spirit Body of Distorted Killing. The structure of his body changes completely: he loses his human face, his body becomes muscular, blades similar to daggers emerge from his arms, a long tail grows, and a series of fringes or twisted waves emerge from his head. Even in said form, he manages to keep certain characteristics of his body ‘patched’. And there we are. Patchworks!

Namely, if you observe Mahito’s visual appearance in the series, you will notice that his whole face, as well as most of his body, is covered in patches; this seems to be a trademark thing for him, as it is present even in his Instant Spirit Body of Distorted Killing form. It is unknown if he can remove them (he probably could with his power), but they are what makes Mahito – Mahito.

Because they disliked him, the protagonists gave him the nickname “Patchface” because his whole face was covered in patches. And that’s the whole story for you – quite straightforward but still interesting!
