Jujutsu Kaisen: Yes, They Named a Star after Gojo Satoru; Here’s Why!

Even non-fans of Jujutsu Kaisen have probably heard of Satoru Gojo, as the guy is not only the most popular character from the series as a whole, but he is also one of the most popular anime characters in general. Gojo’s fanbase is such that he has transcended the series itself and has become more popular than the protagonist, Yuji Itadori himself. Now, Gojo seemingly died in Chapter 236, and soon after, someone “bought” a star and named it after Gojo. What?! Yes, you’ve read that correctly, and keep reading to find out more details.

As per several Reddit posts, after Satoru Gojo’s apparent death in Chapter 236 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga (which has yet to be 100% confirmed), someone “bought” a star and officially registered it under the name “Gojo Satoru”; this happened on September 21, 2023. Now, this is, of course, nothing official, and the name has not been registered in any official book of records for stellar objects. Still, it is a nice homage to Satoru Gojo, who has been considered the star of Jujutsu Kaisen, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that Gojo has ultimately received his actual, personal star out there in the universe.

As there is not much to tell about the story, we are going to provide you with the known details as they have been presented on Reddit, the principal source for this story, and tell you a bit about Satoru Gojo and his role in the story, from which you will be able to deduce why he is so popular and why he has, indeed, earned his own star, even though the circumstances of this honor are quite tragic. If you’re not fully up to date with what happened in Chapter 236 of Jujutsu Kaisen, this article will contain some major spoilers, but if you know what happened, you can approach it without any worries.

According to Reddit, Gojo did really receive his own star

Well, the topic of this article is not actually a piece of news that destroyed the Internet or the astronomical society. Still, it is a very interesting story that we’ve found on Reddit, and the story actually goes like this:

In Chapter 236, whose leaks were available on September 21, 2023, Satoru Gojo was sliced in half by Sukuna during their fight. The character seemingly died (Chapter 237 did not address Gojo’s death in any way, so we still don’t have a full, 100% confirmation of what happened, but by all means – he is dead), which was a shock for the fandom, not simply because Gojo died prematurely, but because of the way his death was handled, which is still considered by many to be badly written and disrespectful. But that’s a wholly different issue.

We gave you this story so that you know what preceded this article’s main story. Gojo’s apparent death at the hands of Sukuna was a shocking moment for everyone. We cannot deny that, and fans have since been looking for a way to figure out how Gojo will come back to the series (which is something we have also written about) and cope with the loss by honoring this great character in the best way possible.

And while we’ve had the pleasure of seeing numerous hate posts, love posts, and even some obituaries, the Reddit article we have linked above certainly provided us with the most original take on Gojo’s death that we’ve seen.

Namely, according to that post, someone has indeed “bought” a star and has named it “Gojo Satoru” in honor of Jujutsu Kaisen‘s star character. Now, you have to understand that this is not official and that the name will probably not be entered in any official register of stellar bodies. Still, it is nice to know that someone actually cared enough to pay money to honor Gojo’s legacy. If you want more precise data on how to find it, here is the photo from Reddit:

This story should, of course, be taken with at least a small grain of salt, as these things are easily forged and save for Reddit, no one has really backed this one up, but even if it turns out to be fake news, it’s still an interesting way of honoring Gojo’s legacy.

From that perspective, we can really say we’re glad that so many people share our love for Gojo and that – regardless of what Akutami ultimately does with the story – Gojo will remain the series’ most important character and its one and only star.

Now that we have settled this allow us to tell you just a bit about Gojo so that you can understand why he is so important for the story of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Satoru first appears in the prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0 when he tries to convince his superiors to allow Yūta Okkotsu to join the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College. Later, he becomes his teacher and introduces him to his class consisting of Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda. During a battle, Satoru confronts Miguel—a curse user of Suguru Geto’s objects—and easily defeats him.

After all of Suguru’s allies are defeated, Satoru goes to the School to confront the aforementioned, but he has already been defeated by Yūta. After arguing with him, Satoru chats with him one last time before killing him. He then meets up with Yūta and informs him that he is his distant relative. When the curse of Rika—Yūta’s late friend—is destroyed, Satoru says that Yūta cursed her and congratulates him for exorcising her.

At the very beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen, he is in charge of executing Yūji Itadori when he becomes Sukuna’s vessel; this introduction is very similar to Gojo’s first scene in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie. However, Satoru manages to postpone his execution until he ingests all of the demon’s fingers, and as a result, he becomes his master.

In the Shibuya fight, Satoru discovers that his companion’s deceased body, Suguro, is possessed by a powerful curse user, Kenjaku. After attempting to fight on his own, Satoru is sealed away in the Prison Realm. However, at some point in the past, he asked Yūta to protect Yūji in case something happened to him. After his defeat, Satoru is banished from the world of jujutsu as he was proclaimed an accomplice in the Shibuya incident, as his friends were looking for a way to get him out of there.

They ultimately found a way to get Gojo out of the Prison realm, and after they succeded, Gojo began his preparations to fight both Sukuna and Kenjaku. However, the latter was scheduled later if it ever happens. Why? Well, as we’ve said, Gojo apparently lost his life to Sukuna, which is his current story.
