Jujustu Kaisen: How Can Toji See Curses?

Toji Foshiguro is unique in many ways; this is a fact that all fans of Jujutsu Kaisen know well. He was born with a Heavenly Restriction, but despite that, he became so powerful that he defeated even Satoru Gojo once while Gojo was still a student. Toji reappeared once again in Shibuya and was able to defeat and exorcise Dagon almost effortlessly, which brought him back into the spotlight. So, we know that Toji was born with 0 cursed energy, but yet he was able to see curses! How? Keep reading to find out, as the answer is going to be revealed in this article!

Being born with no cursed energy at all honed Toji’s senses

Well, in order to properly explain how and why Toji was able to see curses, we actually have to go back and explain the source of his condition. Toji was, as you might assume, very special and while there is a proper explanation of everything, not all fans know it, and that is why we have decided to explain the issue at hand here before we give a proper explanation of his ability to see curses. So, it all started with a Heavenly Restriction.

Heavenly Restriction refers to a Binding Vow (or restriction) imposed from birth and not the product of choice. They greatly limit the physical capabilities of persons who receive them, yet the advantages they offer are still great compared to the cost. When Toji was born, he was born with such a strange Heavenly Restriction that he had absolutely no cursed energy at all.

To compare, his cousin, Maki Zenin, who was also born with a Heavenly Restriction and suffered a similar fate as Toji because of it, managed to retain a certain (albeit low) amount of cursed energy; but, as we’ve said, Toji’s cursed energy was sucked out completely, and he had zero cursed energy in him.

Now, as far as Maki is concerned, we know that she was unable to perceive cursed spirits and that she had to wear special glasses (with special lenses) that enabled her to see curses.

This is how she became a jujutsu sorcerer despite not being able to use spells and having very little cursed energy in her. In Maki’s case, she had some cursed energy, but that level was not enough for her to be able to perceive cursed spirits. This is the case with most humans, actually, who have low cursed energy levels and cannot see curses. But that makes Toji’s case even stranger, doesn’t it?

If Maki, who had a low level of cursed energy but still had some of it, could not perceive curses without her glasses, how was Toji, who had no cursed energy at all, able to perceive them? There is no trick here – Toji really did have 0 cursed energy, so how was he able to do it? He had no tool or object to help him; he simply saw them. How? Well…

We know that Heavenly Restriction takes away one’s cursed energy but, at the same time, gives them superhuman physical skills. That is why Maki was so strong. The ratio is proportional – the more cursed energy is taken, the more powerful the user becomes. Since Maki still had some cursed energy left in her, she was not as strong as Toji and needed some help. Toji, on the other hand, had no cursed energy at all, and that means that his other stats, including his senses, were completely maxed out. He had 0 cursed energy, but his stats were at their absolute peak.

In such a situation, Toji was able to hone his skills perfectly, and his senses were so good that he was able to perceive curses without any help. They were simply so good. And that is the whole story of how and why Toji Fushiguro was able to perceive curses in the series.
