James Gunn Dispels Speculation and Reveals the Primary Villain of the Upcoming ‘Superman’ Film

‘Superman’ is the most anticipated DCU project at the moment, even though ‘Creature Commandos’ will hit screens earlier. After months of anticipation, James Gunn happily announced the commencement of ‘Superman’ filming on February 29th, coincidentally Superman’s birthday, in Svalbard, Norway’s Adventdalen Valley. The location was chosen for its Arctic resemblance and natural beauty.

With filming underway, more scoops and leaks about the movie are surfacing. Despite limited plot details, speculation abounds, occasionally sparking viral discussions.

Yesterday, well-known source Daniel Richtman shared on his private Patreon account that Ultraman would be the main villain in the upcoming ‘Superman’ movie. Fans took these rumors seriously, considering the frequent link between Ultraman and Bizarro. It was inevitable that these rumors would reach James Gunn, known for debunking such claims and discrediting leakers.

Upon learning about the Ultraman rumors, Gunn took to Threads to address them directly.

Gunn clarified that he’s unsure about the source of those rumors, but he confirmed that the main villain in the upcoming movie will indeed be Lex Luthor. This revelation isn’t unexpected, considering he was one of the initial cast members announced, played by Hoult.

Some fans commented that the Ultraman rumors might have been intentionally fabricated to prompt Gunn into revealing the real villain, which he did.

On March 8th, filming for ‘Superman’ restarted at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and is scheduled to run until August 2. Additional filming will take place in Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Macon. The movie will feature characters from the Authority and other superheroes, such as Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, a Green Lantern. ‘Superman’ is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
