In a candid 1986 interview with Tiger Beat, a then 22-year-old Brad Pitt looked toward a future he couldn’t yet guarantee. He predicted that by the age of 32, he would be married with several children, but his professional goals were even more specific.

He expressed a desire to be respected as an actor and to eventually establish his own production company, citing Kevin Costner’s career as his primary inspiration. By 1996, Pitt had remarkably exceeded those early aspirations, having starred in a string of critically and commercially dominant films.

True to his word, he co-founded Plan B Entertainment in 2001, which has since become a powerhouse behind Oscar-winning projects like 12 Years a Slave and Moonlight. Despite a career defined by massive successes, Pitt has occasionally reflected on the roles that slipped through his fingers.

While he famously attempted to exit Interview with the Vampire due to a lackluster script, his most significant missed opportunities were two roles that eventually helped define Matt Damon’s stardom.

Pitt was the first choice to play Jason Bourne in the 2002 thriller The Bourne Identity. He was reportedly interested in the part, but was forced to decline because he was already contractually committed to Tony Scott’s Spy Game.

The second major “what if” came with Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. Pitt and his Plan B partner Brad Grey had actually purchased the rights to remake the original Hong Kong thriller, Internal Affairs, with the intention of Pitt playing the undercover Boston officer, Colin Sullivan.

Ultimately, Pitt decided to step aside from the leading role, feeling that he had aged out of the character’s core motivation. He explained in a 2007 interview that he felt the story worked better with younger guys who were just starting their lives, leading to Damon stepping in for one of the most acclaimed performances of the decade.

Fast forward to this year, and Pitt’s career remains as dynamic as ever. He is currently filming the psychological drama The Riders in Hydra, Greece, under the direction of Edward Berger.

The film, based on Tim Winton’s novel, features Pitt as a father embarking on a desperate search across Europe for his missing wife alongside co-stars Julianne Nicholson and Danny Huston.

This follows a massive 2025 for the actor, which was anchored by the high-octane racing epic F1. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film saw Pitt playing Sonny Hayes, a retired driver returning to mentor a rookie played by Damson Idris; the project was a critical darling, earning four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

Fans also have The Adventures of Cliff Booth to look forward to later this year. This “derivative” follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by David Fincher and written by Quentin Tarantino, wrapped production in January and is scheduled for a major Netflix release.

Whether he is navigating the world of outlaw motorcycle clubs in The Riders or reprising his most iconic characters, Pitt has successfully achieved the “respected actor” status he craved as a 22-year-old.
