Charlize Theron has long been one of Hollywood’s most recognizable fashion figures. The longtime Dior ambassador has delivered countless red carpet moments over the years, and recently she has been showing off a more relaxed, effortless approach to dressing.

At home, though, she answers to a much tougher fashion jury. Theron adopted her daughter Jackson in 2012 and welcomed August in 2015, and the girls, now 14 and 12, have never been shy about sharing their opinions on their mom’s looks.

The 51-year-old opened up about her evolving wardrobe while speaking with PEOPLE at the Veuve Clicquot Club Solaire VIP opening in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, on October 1. Theron explained that she has moved away from her heel-heavy days and now gravitates toward simpler, more gender-neutral pieces.

“I think I used to wear more heels, and I’m more of a flat girl now, for sure,” she told PEOPLE. “I think I’ve always liked more masculine, kind of gender-neutral clothes.” She added that she still enjoys feminine pieces from time to time but is currently leaning a little more into the masculine side of her style.

Her daughters, however, are not on board. “My daughters are not too happy about that … where mom is right now,” she said. This isn’t the first time Theron’s daughters have pushed back on her look. When she cut her hair into a real mullet for ‘The Old Guard 2’, she revealed that one of her girls burst into tears at the sight of it.

Theron has explained that her daughters see her as a princess and want her to look the part. Her own taste, meanwhile, often veers toward the edgy and masculine. She has also embraced a more low-maintenance beauty routine in recent years.

Theron has previously joked that her busy life as a mom leaves little time for anything more than washing her hair and letting it dry naturally. Theron’s relationship with fashion has evolved on screen too. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she said that having no say over her characters’ costumes frustrated her for years, describing fittings early in her career as belittling.

She has since made a concerted effort to have more control over what her characters wear. Theron also noted that the industry has a tendency to over-sexualize female characters.

Despite her current preference for simpler styles, Theron clearly still loves fashion. She revealed to PEOPLE that she has saved many of her signature pieces in her basement for her daughters to wear when they’re older.

She shared that one daughter recently went digging through the boxes for an all-white event, only for Theron to stop her and explain that those pieces are being saved for later. It seems her daughters will one day inherit an enviable wardrobe.

Theron also opened up about her family’s Halloween plans. She admitted she was never a big Halloween person but became one after having kids, since her daughters absolutely love the holiday.

Now that they’re older, though, the girls prefer to celebrate on their own. Theron joked that this works out perfectly for her, since it means she gets to head home and relax with a TV show instead.

Between her style shift and her daughters’ strong opinions, Theron’s candid comments offer a relatable glimpse into life with teenagers. Even an Oscar winner, it turns out, can’t win every fashion debate at home.

What do you think of Charlize Theron’s more masculine, laid-back fashion style?
