Michael Weatherly’s Exit From ‘NCIS’ and the Story Behind Tony DiNozzo’s Goodbye

Share:

Weatherly played Tony DiNozzo for 13 seasons and more than 300 episodes on ‘NCIS’, and viewers first met the character on the show’s backdoor pilot on ‘JAG’. That long history is why Michael Weatherly’s exit has stayed such a persistent topic among fans of the franchise. A departure from an original cast member rarely arrives without questions attached.

He left at the end of the thirteenth season in 2016, and the explanations he has offered since then are scattered across several interviews and press appearances. Putting them side by side gives a clearer picture of a decision that was less sudden than it first appeared. It also helps explain why his recent return carries real weight.

Tony DiNozzo Departure and the Original Announcement

CBS and Weatherly confirmed in January 2016 that Tony would leave after thirteen seasons, and fans were quite shocked by the news. The announcement itself was brief. No reason was given for the departure when it was made public.

The Hollywood Reporter linked the news to an incident in which Weatherly pleaded no contest to driving under the influence and was sentenced to an alcohol recovery program. Weatherly’s own explanations, however, pointed in a different direction. They centered on how long he had spent in one place.

Later that year, while promoting his new legal drama at the Television Critics Association press tour, he said “I was burnt out by ‘NCIS’ and I was ready for a new challenge.” He described the move as a creative choice rather than a rupture.

He also said the story felt like a circle that had come all the way around, and that he was happy with how the character’s arc resolved. The show is known for long workdays, and actor Sean Murray said in 2020 that the typical day ran about 12 hours. After more than a decade of that schedule, a change of pace is easy to understand.

Cote de Pablo’s Exit and the Changing Dynamic

In an interview with TV Insider, Weatherly said he began thinking about leaving after Cote de Pablo departed in the eleventh season. He pointed to the loss of the banter, sparring and flirting between Tony and Ziva, which moved between sibling and near romantic energy. That pairing had been a defining feature of the series for years.

Once that dynamic was gone, he said he felt he had “stayed at the party for too long.” The image is a quiet one, and it suggests a performer who still respected the show but no longer felt in step with the room. The comment reads as more reflective than bitter.

He added that wanderlust had set in, and that he had directed a documentary and started a production company. He also wanted more time with his family. A report from Soap Central likewise noted that the character had begun to feel repetitive to him after Ziva’s exit.

None of this made the goodbye easy. Weatherly admitted the departure was a tearful one and that it took considerable acting skill to hold himself together during several scenes. His final appearance as Tony aired on May 17.

What Came Next With ‘Bull’ and ‘Tony & Ziva’

Weatherly joined the legal drama ‘Bull’ after leaving ‘NCIS’, and he starred in that CBS series for six seasons. The role gave him the new challenge he had described, and it kept him on the same network. His time away from Tony DiNozzo was substantial.

He later reunited with de Pablo for the Paramount+ spin off ‘Tony & Ziva’, in which the pair co-parent their daughter in Paris before becoming involved in international intrigue. The series ran for one season. For fans, it offered the on screen reunion that had been missing for years.

That reunion rested on a story point established earlier. Tony moved to Paris, and Ziva eventually joined her family after the sixteenth season finale revealed she had faked her death. The spin off picked up from there, which gave Weatherly a way back into the character on terms he had helped shape.

Tony DiNozzo Return in ‘NCIS’ Season 24

CBS announced on July 1 that Weatherly would reprise Tony DiNozzo for a season long storyline in the twenty fourth season. Weatherly confirmed the news himself in a video on the show’s official Instagram account. The return came a decade after his departure.

The new season premiered on Tuesday, October 6, at 8 p.m. on CBS. The story places Tony in Washington with his security firm thriving again, having moved past the events of ‘Tony & Ziva’. Weatherly has said the return will not retcon what happened in that spin off.

The season trailer suggests Tony is not simply there to greet old friends, and that something serious is unfolding. Ziva, however, does not return alongside him. That absence keeps the focus on how Tony has changed since he left the team.

Weatherly once described feeling that he had overstayed at the party, and now Tony has walked back through the door with a different perspective. Does his return in the current season feel like the right resolution for the character, or did the goodbye in the thirteenth season already say everything it needed to?
