Bethesda Finally Reveals the Official Name of the Next Elder Scrolls Game
Few video game sequels have been anticipated for as long as Bethesda’s next Elder Scrolls adventure. The game was first teased at Bethesda’s E3 showcase in June 2018 with only a short teaser and a title card, and no subtitle.
In the years since, fans have treated every hint as a clue. In July, Bethesda told fans that multiple Fallout titles and the next Elder Scrolls game were in development, but the studio still hadn’t revealed the game’s full name.
That changed on November 3. Bethesda Game Studios shared a name-reveal trailer, asking fans whether they had guessed correctly, and confirmed that the game is called ‘The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel’.
The reveal came in a short teaser that invites players to embark on their next journey to Tamriel. Bethesda described the video as revealing both the game’s name and its location.
The brief trailer shows a metallic scroll being uncovered from the sand before the title logo appears. It also includes an in-world passage attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest of High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell.
That reference to Hammerfell has fans convinced they now know where the game is set. Vice noted that the passage’s references to a lost future and an undone victory could point to prophecy and fate playing a big role, though that is the outlet’s interpretation and not Bethesda’s.

No gameplay, release date, or platforms were shown. Bethesda said development is ongoing and it will be some time before it’s ready to share more. The reveal was part of Bethesda Game Studios’ 40th anniversary celebration. The studio released a video called “Celebrating 40 Years of Bethesda Game Studios,” filmed in Bethesda, Maryland, where the company was founded.
The video looks back on the studio’s history, beginning with a physics-based sports game in 1986. It then moves through ‘The Elder Scrolls: Arena’, ‘Morrowind’, ‘Oblivion’, ‘Skyrim’, ‘Fallout’ and ‘Starfield’.
It also notes that ‘Skyrim’ is still Bethesda’s most-played game, 15 years after it launched. Executive producer Todd Howard explained that fans are always asking about the next Elder Scrolls game, and said the anniversary felt like the right time to reveal its title.
Some fans may have guessed the name already. Vice reports that the title matches one that leaked in April, and Xbox CEO Asha Sharma also dropped a subtitle hint in August. Former Bethesda writer Michael Kirkbride had even replied “Yep” to a Reddit user who suggested ‘Sentinel’, although that response didn’t confirm the name at the time. Nintendo Life had also reported the name about a week before the official reveal.
Not everyone expected the title, though. Some commenters noted that ‘Sentinel’ breaks from the series’ usual habit of naming games after places or regions. The reveal will thrill longtime fans, but patience will still be needed. With no release window announced, the game appears to be some way from launch.

The anniversary video ended by inviting fans to join Bethesda for the next 40 years. It also named Fallout and The Elder Scrolls as the series the studio plans to focus on going forward. For now, players finally have a name and a likely destination. The next step will be seeing what the return to Tamriel actually looks like.
