Attack on Titan: Are Levi and Hange in Love? Relationship Explained!
Levi Ackerman, often formally referred to as Captain Levi is the squad captain of the Special Operations Squad within the Survey Corps and is widely known as humanity’s strongest soldier. Levi Ackerman is one of the most interesting characters from Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan franchise, and his unbelievable strength is something that has made him so special. In this article, though, we are going to talk about his private life, as we plan on analyzing one specific relationship of his, namely, the one he had with Hange Zoë, whom with the fans most often shipped him.
Hajime Isayama himself confirmed, at one point, that Levi Ackerman never had a love interest in the series, which means that he and Hange were never in love in the series. He was, actually, created as a character who was simply above having romantic feelings towards anyone, which means that Isayama was actually consistent in writing Levi throughout the series.
The rest of this article will elaborate further on Levi Ackerman’s private life, as we are going to focus, specifically, on his relationship with Hange Zoë, but also some additional details about his relationships with some characters. Levi Ackerman is a character that certainly deserves a lot of attention. In the continuation of this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about his private life and how it ties into the story of the Attack on Titan manga and anime.
Is Levi Ackerman in love with Hange Zoë? Explaining their relationship!

Levi Ackerman and Hange Zoë collaborate as senior Survey Corps members. On occasion, Hange seems to enjoy making fun of him. Levi frequently refers to Hange insultingly and finds his unusual conduct annoying. Levi rudely discarded Hange when they first met. Though he doesn’t share her fixation with the Titans, he learns to value Hange’s knowledge of them over time. Instead of capturing some of the Titans, he would rather murder them. Even if Hange’s peculiar behavior could seem hostile, they depart and have faith in the other person.
Levi is obviously slightly annoyed by Hange, so she can only express her excitement in front of a small number of people. If she talks too much, Levi will distance himself from her until she has finished speaking. According to an interview with the author, Levi occasionally knocks Hange out so he may wash her because she frequently has too much research to complete and forgets about it.
Alright, if we had to introduce Levi to someone to start a relationship with, Hange Zoë would undoubtedly be our first choice. The two of them had collaborated closely, and even though their relationship was, to put it mildly, volatile, they did develop to like and care about one another. It does not appear that either of the two developed romantic sentiments for the other. Therefore, it appears that their connection was strictly platonic and professional.
Furthermore, since Hange Zoë was purposefully intended to appear ambiguous, we still don’t know for sure what gender she actually is. The majority of people refer to her as a female (and she is, in fact, a female in the anime series). We have also done so in this article to make things easier. However, this has not been confirmed, and since we don’t know Levi’s sexual orientation, we cannot determine whether the relationship between Hange Zoë and him ever had any potential.
Did Levi Ackerman have another love interest in Attack on Titan?
With the Attack on Titan manga being over, we actually know what happens to Levi in the end, and here is just a quick recap. In the end, Armin transforms on Eren’s Titan while Levi and the others head back to Salta. They are happy that Reiner survived but are shocked that Eren and the Origin of All Living Matter also did. Levi maintains that they must kill Eren and rejects Connie’s suggestion to kill the Source. The Source starts to spew smoke into the fortress before they can attempt to attack Eren once more.
In order to avoid danger from the Titans, who would turn all present Eldians into Titans as a result of the smoke, Levi orders Mikasa and Pieck to depart the citadel with him on Falco. Pieck leaves to help Reiner fight the centipede while Falco guides Levi and Mikasa right to Eren. Levi uses a thunder spear to carve a path inside his Titan’s jaws so that he can kill Eren once Mikasa deduces that he is there.
Levi watches as the Titans’ might is reduced, and the Eldian families begin to come together as he leans against a rock. In a vision of his dead teammates watching him, he asks to let them see the results of their labor. Levi does the same in return for the salutations from the troops. Three years after the Salta War, Levi moves to Marley. He is cared for by Gabi and Falco and is forever confined to a wheelchair due to his injuries.
As you can see, the hero of humanity actually had a very grim ending for himself. He was left permanently disabled and in a wheelchair, being cared for by Gabi and Falco. He wasn’t in any condition to have a family, nor did he ever have one. Somehow, his ending up alone made sense based on his whole portrayal throughout the manga, but this was still a bit of an overkill, although it does make sense from a plot-driven perspective. Be that as it may, it is now obvious that Levi Ackerman never ended up with anyone, but did he ever have a love interest throughout the series? He did not.
While his relationships with various characters, none of them could be considered romantic. Regardless of what some admirers would claim, it was obvious that he had never had that kind of sympathy for anyone. Levi was always the kind of figure who was above such things, according to Hajime Isayama, who later confirmed this. He had many goals, one of which was to beat the Titans. Therefore, he never really cared about things like love and feelings. He was simply imagined in that manner, and Isayama consistently portrayed one of the series’ protagonists from start to finish.
Aside from his relationship with Hange, his relationship with Petra Rall is also worth mentioning, as the two of them have also been shipped quite often. The issue with Petra is that she died very early in the story, so even if there was some potential, nothing could actually happen. Plus, it is unclear what the nature of Levi’s feelings towards Petra was; we do know that he cared deeply for her, but whether it was actual romance or just responsibility – as he was her subordinate and was responsible for her in that aspect – has never been clarified.
Petra and Hange thus remain the only two characters that had any shipping potential when Levi’s concerned, but as Isayama himself confirmed, Levi’s just not that type of character, and that is why he never had a love interest in the series.
