The 10 Best Action Movies To Watch With Your Boyfriend

Share:

Action movies are something that is commonly associated with manly men who love their guns and explosions and stuff, right? However, that’s a silly misconception, and the fact is, you can enjoy a great action movie even if you’re not a manly man yourself. If you want to watch a great action flick with your boyfriend and still have a good time yourself, I have you covered.

This is a list of the ten best action movies to watch with your boyfriend, ranked only by the movies’ IMDb scores. Enjoy!

Honorable mention: ‘The Tourist’ (2010) & ‘Murder Mystery’ (2019)

Before the list actually begins, you guys know I love giving you some honorable mentions that are great for the genre we’re talking about, but just not great enough to make the top 10.

First up is ‘The Tourist’ (2010), starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. It’s actually quite an interesting movie that has action, thrill, and deceitful romance – you’ll certainly both enjoy it. There are some flaws, however, but I’m not going to spoil the fun.

Next, ‘Murder Mystery’ (2019) is a Netflix original that surprised me. It wasn’t bad at all, actually. You’ll definitely have fun trying to figure out the ‘whodunit’ while watching a film with crude but entertaining humor that Adam Sandler always brings to the mix. The premise of the film is quite ridiculous, though, but if you focus on the actual plot, and not the premise, it’s quite cool for a chill movie night.

The 25 Best Murder Mystery (Whodunit) Movies Ever Filmed

10. ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ (2005)

IMDb score: 6.5/10

What it’s about: A married couple lives a seemingly boring, ordinary life. However, one of them is secretly an assassin, hired by their agency to kill their next target – their very own spouse. It proves to be harder than it seems – because the spouse is also secretly an assassin, hired by a rival agency to kill their spouse. What will be more important? Work, or love?

Why you should watch it: This is the perfect action movie for a couple to watch together. You can absolutely see and feel their chemistry on-screen. It’s an awesome action film that is kind of a comedy too – a slightly dark one, that is – and also a romantic story of lovers facing off.

9. ‘The A-Team’ (2010)

IMDb score: 6.7/10

What it’s about: A small group of veterans return from the Iraq War. However, they aren’t returning on nice terms but rather to try and clear their names after being accused of hideous war crimes they did not commit. They were framed, and they will do whatever it takes to prove it. The question is, however, who would’ve framed them?

Why you should watch it: ‘The A-Team’ is different from all the other movies on this list, but I chose to include it because it will have you at the edge of your seat the whole time. I loved the mystery behind who framed the group, and why – and for those with a more gentle soul watching the film, there’s also some romance in there, so make sure to give it a try!

8. ‘Desperado’ (1995)

IMDb score: 7.1/10

What it’s about: El Mariachi, a former gunslinger and a musician, visits a small Mexican town right on the borders. Nobody saw El Mariachi for a long time, but it doesn’t take long for his troubled past to catch up to him, and problems arise. Bucho – the local drug-dealing king – sets his eyes on El Mariachi, but he has no idea what he got himself into…

Why you should watch it: I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve watched this film. The music, the insane action, and a story of an ex-gunslinger whose past catches up to him… ‘Desperado’ is a classic, and you will love it just as much as your boyfriend, if not more!

7. ‘Lawless’ (2012)

IMDb score: 7.2/10

What it’s about: Set in the 1920s during the Great Depression, three brothers start a bootlegging business in Franklin County, Virginia. However, a new deputy and his crew walk into town and threaten the existence of the brothers’ business, which means it affects their very livelihood – and that is something they won’t take lightly. Especially when they realize that the authorities actually have a different agenda – they simply want the piece of the cake.

Why you should watch it: I’ve actually seen ‘Lawless’ just recently, and it really surprised me. It’s an awesome movie that is set in one of my favorite eras of history. However, as beautiful as the movie is aesthetically, it’s even better story-wise. If you watched ‘Peaky Blinders’ and loved it, you’ll probably enjoy ‘Lawless’ just as much.

6. ‘John Wick’ (2014)

IMDb score: 7.4/10

What it’s about: A professional hitman retires after falling in love. His wife dies from an illness and leaves behind a pup to keep her husband’s company. A group of thugs break in, steal his car, and kill his dog. The hitman comes out of retirement. Things don’t go that well for the thugs.

Why you should watch it: There are four ‘John Wick’ movies out there so far, amassing a cult following – and deservedly so. When you opt to watch these films, you don’t expect a deep, profound story. You expect a motive, and then an hour and a half of pure, awesome action that is well-written and incredibly well-directed. Keanu is Keanu, and John Wick is transcendently awesome.

5. ‘The Gentlemen’ (2019)

IMDb score: 7.8/10

What it’s about: An Oxford graduate uses his intelligence and cunning skills to create a massive marijuana empire by using abandoned estates of formerly rich British aristocrats. He tries to sell his empire to a billionaire but finds out he might’ve bit more than he can chew, as things turn south rather quickly, involving murder, deception, and all kinds of chaos.

Why you should watch it: I always have high expectations for Guy Ritchie’s films, but this one literally checks all the boxes. There’s action, a bit of comedy, and a whirlwind of a story that keeps you on the edge while also providing enough comic relief for it to be rather enjoyable. It’s one of my favorites on this list, and one of the best movies of the decade overall, let alone among action flicks only.

4. ‘Die Hard’ (1988)

IMDb score: 8.2/10

What it’s about: John McClane, an NYPD cop, tries to single-handedly resolve a hostage situation at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles, where a bunch of hostages – including his wife – are taken by a group of terrorists.

Why you should watch it: The moment when Hans Gruber falls is the moment our hearts break. He was a prick, but you just can’t help yourself but love hating the dude. Yes, this is also a Christmas movie, but there’s only a handful of action flicks I’d rather watch than ‘Die Hard.’ Give it a shot – you will certainly enjoy the jam-packed action too, if it is your cup of tea.

3. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (2022)

IMDb score: 8.3/10

What it’s about: Thirty years after the events of ‘Top Gun’, Captain Pete Mitchell, aka ‘Maverick’ still works as an aviator, but in a rather different field. He is called upon to the Top Gun squad to train the best of the best pilots in the Navy to complete a nearly impossible, but crucially important mission.

Why you should watch it: The first ‘Top Gun’ movie has great critical acclaim, but in my humble opinion, it doesn’t stand the test of time and is kind of mediocre for today’s rewatch. However, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ – the sequel 30-ish years in the making – was an absolute masterpiece that we didn’t know we needed.

The fight scenes are phenomenal, but the storyline is even better, deeper, and more profound than in the first movie. My fiance absolutely loved the film, and so will you. The best part? It just recently dropped on Netflix for easy access!

2. ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ (1991)

IMDb score: 8.6/10

What it’s about: An identical cyborg is sent once again despite previously having failed in his mission to kill Sarah Connor. This time, instead of killing, his job is to protect Sarah Connor’s young son from another, more powerful cyborg made out of malleable metal, allowing him to liquefy and move through solid objects while avoiding damage from any kind of weaponry.

Why you should watch it: The first ‘Terminator’ is cool, but the second one is arguably the best action movie of all time. I mean, that ending… I won’t spoil a thing for you, but if you want a movie to make your man happy – and even shed a tear or two – this is the one. Not a romantic drama, no ‘notebooks’ and stuff. THIS.

1. ‘The Matrix’ (1999)

IMDb score: 8.7/10

What it’s about: Neo – a computer hacker – is led into the underworld where he discovers something unfathomable – we are all living inside a program called the Matrix. He is given a choice – take the blue pill and forget everything, and just go back to your normal life, or take the red pill, and fight the evil cyber-intelligence that enslaved humankind.

Why you should watch it: Enter The MATRIX! You can’t go wrong with this one. It’s smart, jam-packed with action, and an absolute classic that will spin your man’s conspiracy theorist mind into a whirlwind. I mean, you’ve both probably watched the movie already, but ‘The Matrix’ can always be rewatched. Also, a young Keanu Reeves? You bet it’s awesome!
