Frieren: Judradjim & Vollzanbel Explained – How Powerful Are They?
Magic is a very important part of the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End lore. The titular protagonist of the series, Frieren, is a mage, and after the fall of the Demon King, she continued her journey to collect spells from all around the world, as that was her hobby. Now, you can understand that magic is quite important for the world of Frieren, but in this article, we will not discuss that on a general level, as we will focus on not one but two very specific and powerful spells from the series. One of them is the thunder-based Judradjim, while the other is the fire-based Vollzanbel. In this article, you are going to find out about both of them.
Judradjim is a lightning-based spell with destructive power
Both of the spells we are going to talk about are offensive spells and are quite powerful, as they seem to be very advanced spells that only the most skilled mages can use effectively. Also, both of them debuted during the second part of the First-Class Mage Exam, as Frieren used them to fight her own Perfect Replica; so, basically, it was Frieren who used them to fight… well… Frieren. The spells were so powerful that Fern had to run and hide in order to avoid being seriously injured by them. Now, let us tell you what you need to know.
We knew that Frieren was capable of using a lot of spells, but we also knew that she was restraining herself when fighting other Mages and that she only used basic offensive spells, probably because she did not want to kill or seriously injure her opponents unless necessary; on top of that, she was usually so skilled that she did not need to resort to more powerful and destructive spells. As far as Judradjim is concerned, it is definitely one of the more powerful and destructive spells that Frieren knows, which is why she used it against herself, as she needed to defeat herself.
The full name of the spell is Destructive Lightning: Judradjim and it is, as the name implies, a thunder-based spell. When using this spell, Frieren is able to fire a large amount of exceptionally powerful lightning blasts from her staff. Their blasts are extremely powerful, as well as destructive, and if one is hit by them, he will either die or be gravely injured. It doesn’t seem like there is a specific pattern to this spell, i.e., the lightning blasts simply run wild around the user, but the user himself is protected from the blasts, as it seems.
Fern, being as powerful as she was, had to run and hide to avoid being hit by one of the blasts, which implies that the spell in question is, indeed, extremely powerful. Although the manga did not reveal it, the anime showed us that the color of the lightning is purple and not yellow or blue, as lightning is usually depicted. We only saw this spell being used once when Frieren fought against Frieren so we don’t have any additional details for you, but we think that this was enough for you to deduce that we’re truly dealing with an exceptionally powerful and destructive spell, so we understand why Frieren wouldn’t use it that often. And this brings us to the second spell.
Vollzanbel can melt even stone without a problem
Although equally destructive and dangerous, Vollzanbel is a spell that functions a bit differently and it is based on a different element than Destructive Lightning: Judradjim. As we’ve said, Destructive Lightning: Judradjim was a thunder-based spell, whereas Hellfire Summoning: Vollzanbel is a fire-based spell. As the full name implies, it really does look like a burst of flames from Hell or like a burst of molten lava, both of which seem to us to be equally dangerous.
Hellfire Summoning: Vollzanbel is also an offensive spell, although Frieren actually used it for defensive purposes in the series, as she destroyed a giant rock that was falling on her with it. Well, she and her Replica both used the spell at the same time.
So, what does Hellfire Summoning: Vollzanbel do? Well, like Judradjim, it creates a powerful and destructive blast, but this is a blast that consists of flames, rather than lightning. It looks like a burst of lava that suddenly explodes and creates a powerful blast that is able to blow up and destroy many things, including a giant piece of rock that was falling down on Frieren and her Replica. In that aspect, Hellfire Summoning: Vollzanbel is just as dangerous and just as destructive, and another piece of evidence is that Frieren can be extremely intimidating when she wants to.
Vollzanbel’s destructive power is also quite impressive, and Fern also has to hide from it. It also makes sense that Frieren avoided using this spell while battling others, as it probably would’ve killed or seriously injured anyone in her way, and since we know that Frieren isn’t really an evil character, this makes absolute sense. But these two spells really do show that she can be extremely dangerous and that she is, along with Serie, the strongest and most skilled mage in the whole series without a doubt.
