Garp vs. Kaido: Who Is Stronger & Who Would Win?

After writing so many comparisons, we can say that – save for Dragon Ball – no other anime series offers so much comparison potential as One Piece, not just because of the sheer amount of characters present but also because all of them can be well-compared to each other. In this article, we will compare Luffy’s grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, with Kaido, the former Captain of the Beast Pirates and a former Yonko. In this article, we will tell you who the stronger is and who would win.

Kaido is more powerful than Garp and would win a fight against him. Kaido is not necessarily stronger than Garp, that is definitely true, but he has more powers than Garp – i.e., he has a Devil Fruit and is more skilled in the use of weapons – and that would probably be enough in the long run. Garp does surpass Kaido when Haki is concerned, but aside from that, Kaido basically triumphs in the other categories, which is enough to conclude that in a fair one-on-one fight, Kaido would ultimately be able to take this victory against Monkey D. Garp.

What follows, of course, is a detailed analysis of the answer we have given you above. We will portray Monkey D. Garp and Kaido in more detail, giving you a thorough analysis of the issue at hand and the balance of power between the two characters using our usual formula. Through several categories, you will see who the stronger of the two is and why our answer is like it is, i.e., why we’re certain that Kaido is stronger than Garp at this point of the story.

Physical abilities

Garp’s fists are incredibly strong. In fact, they are so powerful that he is able to damage Luffy and make him feel pain with just one hit. Also, he could harm Marco during the War, even when he was in his Phoenix form. He asserted that while preparing for Chinjao, he had managed to crush a total of eight mountains.

As demonstrated when he was attacked by Captain Morgan and survived a cut from his ax, Garp also possesses incredible stamina and unbelievable tolerance for pain. Garp has also proven to have remarkable speed, possibly even being faster than CP9’s Soru, as he could avoid every Straw Hat and get to Luffy to wake him up in time.

Kaido has a lot of muscle and is very strong physically. He was successful in sinking nine enormous prison ships. Kaido is strong enough that his lone scream rendered the surroundings visibly damaged. One of Kaido’s greatest assets is his invincibility; he lost only seven battles, was taken prisoner 18 times by the Navy or his opponents, was tortured more than a thousand times, and was put to death 40 times. No execution method, however, no matter what it was, worked. As Shanks and Edward Newgate before them, Kaido and Big Mom demonstrated their equal strength by splitting the sky in half with a single strike.

Garp and Kaido are both exceptionally powerful. It is basically impossible to tell the difference between the two when pure physical strength is concerned. Undoubtedly, this would be a great fight, and since we cannot determine who would win in this aspect, we will split the points in this first category.

Devil Fruit

Monkey D. Garp is one of the rare characters that are on such a high level of power but don’t have any Devil Fruit powers. Since Monkey D. Garp has never consumed a Devil Fruit, we can conclude that there is nothing more to say about this category—at least when it comes to Monkey D. Garp.

Like Momonosuke, Kaido consumed the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, a Legendary Zoan-type Devil Fruit that enables him to change into an oriental dragon. The primary distinction is that Kaido has a much larger dragon form and seems to be in control of his transformations. He will be unable to maintain this form if he takes too many blows like those Luffy gave.

He has a snarl that is powerful enough to summon lightning. He also has a powerful hybrid form that he can use, but which is not an awakened form. Kaido cherishes physical strength over everything else, so he doesn’t really like his Devil Fruit powers that much.

What is there to add here? Not much. Kaido has a Devil Fruit, and Garp does not, which means that this point simply has to go to Kaido. On top of that, Kaido’s Devil Fruit is truly powerful. It is not some gimmick that Garp would easily reject, so there is absolutely no basis for any other conclusion than to give Kaido this point.

Points: Garp 1, Kaido 2

Haki

Because Garp is a Vice Admiral, he can use Haki, as it is a condition, apparently. For starters, we can confirm that Garp can employ Observation Haki. Dr. Fishbonen urged Koby to ask Garp for assistance in studying Observation Haki as soon as he awoke because Garp knew how to teach it to others. Despite Luffy’s rubber body, Garp has injured him numerous times, demonstrating his mastery of the Armament Haki. In a recent encounter with Kuzan, he also demonstrated his ability to use Conqueror’s Haki, proving how uncommon it is to be able to use all three types of Haki.

Kaidou is one of the few people who is proficient in all three types of Haki. By spotting Kozuki Oden’s presence on Enma while Roronoa Zoro was using it, Kaidou proved that he could control Kenbunshoku Haki.

He also used it after his and Big Mom’s united strike to hear the supernovae’s voices, allowing her to say that they were still alive. Kaidou has the same control as Charlotte Katakuri or Luffy, which allows him to wield it deftly and make predictions. The Busoshoku Haki is another art form that Kaidou excels at. On top of that, he is among a very small number of characters who can actually use Haoshoku Haki. They both produced the customary lightning discharge when they collided with Charlotte Linlin using his Kanabo.

Interestingly enough, both of them can use all the types of Haki, which shows just how powerful they are. And while we could try to scale them, it wouldn’t be unfair to do it. Kaido and Garp put more value in Haki than anything else, so the best thing to do here would be to split the points, which is what we will do.

Weapons

Until now, Garp has been seen launching cannonballs (including a gigantic one). He can even use his fists as weapons, although that is about the extent of his weaponry knowledge. He is comparable to Luffy because he doesn’t utilize weapons and depends solely on his physical strength (and Haki) in place of any other unique talents. We do not think that he is one of the series’ top weapon users, even though he is undoubtedly better with weapons than Luffy, who is lousy with them.

Kaidou uses his Hassaikai, a huge metal Kanabo that is equal in size to him and packed with spikes when engaging in combat. Thanks to his incredible physical power, he can toss and crush opponents far away. He used it to pierce the strong defense of Luffy’s enhanced Busoshoku Haki and finish him off with a single blow. He also used it to block the deadly Napoleon sword attack from Charlotte Linlin. It is unknown whether Kaidou still has the double-barreled revolver he used to murder Kozuki Oden or what has become of it.

Finally, we have to give the last point to Kaido, and that makes perfect sense, seeing how Garp is not very proficient with weapons. It is simply not his forte, and while he is probably not horrible with weapons, he simply doesn’t use them that much, and that is why the final point goes to Kaido, who is quite skilled with weapons.

Points: Garp 2, Kaido 4

When Kaido and Garp are concerned, it all comes down to diversity

In many ways, Kaido and Garp are very similar fighters. They both value physical strength and Haki more than anything else, which makes them quite special, but since they are very similar in these categories, in the end, it all comes down to diversity.

Garp has no Devil Fruit and is not proficient with weapons, whereas Kaido has a Devil Fruit and is a solid weapons user. In that aspect, we can only confirm what the points have told us, as Kaido’s diversity is what gives him the advantage over Garp in this fight.
