How Did Luffy and Kaido Manage to Split the Sky? (& Who Else Did It?)
Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga, is known for his many epic fights. One fight stood out among Luffy’s many fights against his numerous opponents. The fight we are talking about is Luffy’s fight against Kaidou of the Four Emperors, one of the most powerful characters in the whole franchise and one of its principal villains. With the conclusion of the Wano Country Arc, we finally have a clear winner of this battle, but that will not be the topic of this article. Namely, what we are going to talk about is the notorious sky-splitting that happened during the battle. We are going to explain how it happened and who else managed to split the sky in One Piece.
The reason why Luffy and Kaido managed to split the skies during their battle is because of the pressure caused by a clash of their respective Haoshoku Haki. The Haoshoku Haki is such a powerful Haki that when two of them collide, they are able to deal serious damage to their surroundings, including the notorious sky-splitting moment. Other characters in the past have also been able to do that.
In this article, we will explain how and why sky-splitting happens in One Piece in more detail. We will also tell you when sky-splitting happened in the past and which characters caused it. There will be spoilers in this article, so if you’re not fully up-to-date with the events of One Piece, be careful how you approach this article.
How does sky-splitting happen in One Piece?
Haoshoku Haki is the rarest form of Haki; it allows users to control others of their own volition. Only one in a few million people in the world are born with this kind of Haki, which cannot be developed via training. People with this kind of Haki are considered to have the attributes of a monarch and are referred to as conquerors or supreme rulers. Haoshoku Haki has the power to harm inanimate things and built-up areas close to the user.
This was originally seen when Shanks used his Haoshoku Haki on Moby Dick. His usage of the Haki was so effective that he not only put down the majority of Whitebeard’s crew members that tried to attack him, but he also damaged some of the wood on the ship. This ship had managed to withstand the harsh sailing conditions of the New World for decades. When two users of Haoshoku Haki collide, lightning-like energy currents are produced. Often, the battling will carry this energy to such heights that it can be seen from everywhere on the island.
Luffy and Chinjao’s fight in the Corrida Colosseum was the first instance of this impact being seen and exhibited. A Haoshoku Haki shock’s force also generates shock waves that shake the surrounding region and may even push nearby people and items away. The impact of the collision between Gol D. Roger and Whitebeard, two of the most powerful Haoshoku users ever, knocked back all of the island’s plants and animals and even exerted great force on their ships off the coast.
Kaidou’s subordinates were very concerned that during the combat, which lasted for half a day, they would completely demolish the castle they were in and possibly the whole of Onigashima island. A huge rift was also made in the skies and clouds above them when Whitebeard, Shanks, and later Kaidou and Big Mom crashed with their Haoshoku.
Which characters caused the sky to split in One Piece?
Over the course of the story, several characters have been able to split the skies in One Piece. In this section, we will tell you who they are and how and when they achieved it.
Whitebeard vs. Shanks
Later, when it is revealed that Shanks is one of the Four Emperors, and it is also revealed that Whitebeard is one of the Four Emperors and that Shanks wanted to speak to Whitebeard to beg him to remove Ace, the leader of Shanks’ second division. Shanks was concerned for Ace’s safety when Whitebeard’s fleet arrived from his attempt to kill Blackbeard. In that meeting, it is also revealed that Blackbeard is to blame for the three scars that span Shanks’ left eye, warning him to exercise caution around him.
Whitebeard belittles Shanks and claims that he will be unable to direct him for a hundred years. Whitebeard then draws his blade from Shanks, who then loses the bisento. The two guns collided with such force that they divided the clouds above them in half. That fact shocks a few members of Shanks and Whitebeard’s team.
Kaidou vs. Big Mom
Arriving at Onigashima, Linlin woke up and was fed large amounts of sweets while being watched by the three headliners. Seeing King, he tried to convince him to go with him to Totto Land since he belonged to one of the three races that he did not possess. Seeing that she didn’t get it, she demanded that they release her, which Kaidou did.
After that, he spoke momentarily with him, invoking Napoleon and attacking him. Eventually, the two gave up fighting and turned to heavy drinking, talking about the Fire Festival and announcing that the Big Mom Pirates and the Beasts Pirates would ally. While preparing for the Fire Festival while donning a kimono Linlin spoke to his band, checking that they were safe.
She soon after heard a noise outside where she was, seeing Chopper. Recognizing him, Linlin began to chase the tank in search of Luffy. She quickly returned to the classroom after Prometheus called out to her upon seeing Nami, Carrot, and Shinobu. Big Mom chased after them while turning nearby objects into homies. Big Mom then captured Nami, Carrot, and Zeus. She took to the stage to join Kaidou as he unveiled his New Onigashima Project and chuckled as Kaidou severed the head of Kurozumi Orochi for objecting to his proposal.
As the raid commenced, Big Mom challenged Luffy, mocking his plan to defeat Kaidou, but Luffy retorted that his objective was to conquer both of them and their followers in a full-scale battle.
Roger vs. Whitebeard
Izo was allowed to board the ship, and Whitebeard next put Oden to the test. He would be permitted to join the crew if he could maintain his grip on the chain for three days. Oden heard a woman in peril just as he had ten minutes left and freed her, drifting to an island. The following day, Whitebeard discovered Karma and his men confronting Oden and a woman named Toki. After Whitebeard vanquishes Karma, he finally gives Oden permission to join his crew. The crew also included Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, who had hidden on Whitebeard’s ship.
Oden was appointed the second division’s leader when Whitebeard divided his crew into five groups two years later. Oden Whitebeard and Roger reconnected four years after their wedding and stood facing one another for three days before splitting the skies. He then enjoyed a drink with Roger and Oden while marveling at Roger’s exploits. When Newgate learned that Roger wanted Oden to become a part of his crew, he reacted fiercely and objected but ultimately bowed to the samurai’s demands.
Kaido vs. Luffy
After the conversation, both returned to their normal forms, and Yamato imbued his Kanabo with Haoshoku Haki to attack Kaidou with his Shinsoku attack. Still, just at that moment, Luffy and Kozuki Momonosuke, in his giant dragon form, arrived on the roof of the skull dome. Luffy activated his Snakeman to attack Kaidou with a Gomu Gomu no Jet Calverin, an attack that accidentally coincided with Yamato’s (as neither was aware of the other’s presence until after hitting Kaidou). Seeing Momonosuke’s new appearance (although without recognizing him), Kaidou decided to revert to his full form in order to face him properly.
Then he, Luffy, and Momonosuke got into a quick fight that bit the samurai and resulted in a clash of Haoshoku Haki that tore the sky. After being affirmed in his ability to stop the clouds and having Yamato at his side, Luffy was left to battle the Emperor all by himself once more. Throughout the battle, Kaidou became weakened, which led to the Homuragumo losing strength and ultimately breaking Onigashima. Kaidou started drinking and using the Shuron Hakke while having fun, starting a much more aggressive phase of the fight. Despite this, Luffy was able to avoid or block the majority of his blows, and he also managed to land both Busoshoku Haki and Haoshoku Haki on him.
Kaidou observed Charlotte Linlin’s departure after defeating her and learning the outcome of their match. He was furious at this, and after remembering her first meeting with her, he started crying. This didn’t seem to matter to Luffy, who changed into a Snakeman and started attacking him extremely quickly while declaring that it would be his final move. The strikes first overwhelmed Kaidou, but he was able to avoid them by using his vision of the future. As their battle came to a conclusion, they both prepared for one more blow, but a CP0 member cut off Luffy’s attack. Kaidou was startled by his presence and decided to end the fight similarly to Kozuki Oden. The Emperor was totally devastated as a result.
