How Old Is Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy 3?

Share:

One of the things that we know in the entire Guardians of the Galaxy storyline is that Groot’s alien tree-like species grows at a rate that is different from how people normally grow and age. Basically, this MCU version of Groot was introduced at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie but quickly became a teenager during the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Then, in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Groot is already a lot bigger. So, how old is Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

Groot is quite possibly around six years old in terms of Earth years. He was born in 2014 and was snapped out of existence for five years. As such, considering that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 possibly takes place in 2025, that means that Groot has only been around for six years since the death of the first Groot.

While Groot may still be just around six years old, it is worth noting that his species grows a lot faster than humans. That’s the reason why he looks older than his age would suggest, as he seems to be around his late teen years or young adult years in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. So, with that said, let’s take a good look at how old Groot is in the third Guardians movie.

How Old Is Groot In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3?

Back in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, we were introduced to the original Groot, who was Rocket’s best friend and was quite possibly the friendliest out of the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, he sacrificed himself to protect the other Guardians when their ship was about to crash. As such, the original Groot is no more. Still, Rocket was able to salvage a twig from the original Groot and allowed it to grow into a new Groot that ended up becoming the current Groot that we know in the Guardians of the Galaxy storyline.

This new Groot, of course, started off as a baby during the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and ended up becoming a teenager during the events of the post-credit scenes of the second movie. Then, by the time Avengers: Infinity War began, Groot was already in his young teenage form, which was the same form that he had in the events of Thor: Love and Thunder.

However, people were quick to notice that Groot has grown to become a lot bigger in the events of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and in the trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This version of Groot is not only taller but is also a lot more muscular, as it is clear that these characters grow faster. So, how old is Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie took place in 2014, and that means that the new version of Groot that we have now was born in 2014. Meanwhile, during the time of Teen Groot that we saw in the events of Avengers: Infinity War, he was just around four years old in terms of Earth years because that movie took place in 2018.

Of course, we know that Groot was one of the characters snapped out of existence after the end of the Infinity War, and that means that he was still around four years old during the events of Avengers: Endgame, which took place in 2023. He missed a total of five years of his life when he was brought back in Endgame.

Then, in Thor: Love and Thunder, which possibly took place in 2024 and shortly after Endgame, he was still in his teen form at the age of five. But in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and in the trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he was already around his young adult or older teen years.

Considering that Vol. 3 possibly takes place in 2025, then that would mean that 11 years have passed since Groot was born in 2014. But because he missed a total of five years of his life because of the snap, Groot is still around six years old in Earth years. In that regard, it is clear that Groot isn’t even that old despite the fact that he already looks like he is a lot older than his age would suggest.

How Fast Does Groot Grow?

As mentioned, Groot is somewhere around six years old in terms of Earth years due to the fact that he missed five of the 11 years that he has been alive. That means that he actually grows faster than regular human beings. So, just how fast does Groot grow?

Based on what we saw in the events of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and in the trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Groot is in his young adult years or in his late teen years. He should be around 18 to 20 years old in terms of his appearance, as he actually still has a young face despite his massive body build.

This would suggest that Groot’s species grows at a rate that’s around three times faster than humans. We saw this in the fact that he is somewhere around 18 in the Holiday Special. As such, considering that he looks at least 18 and is just six years old in terms of Earth time, we can make the assumption that he ages three times faster than humans.

Of course, one of the most interesting details is that he ages rather weirdly, as he had a massive growth spurt between Guardians Vol. 2 and its post-credit scene, considering that he was already an angsty teen after the events of the second movie. In fact, Groot stayed in his angsty teen form until Love and Thunder.

But in the Holiday Special, he became much bigger despite the fact that only around a year or a few months have passed since the events of Love and Thunder. This implies that Groot goes through stages of growth spurts that allow him to grow faster in a short span of time.

Why Does Groot Look Different In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3?

Another interesting detail to take note of is that Groot looks different in the Holiday Special and in the trailer of Guardians Vol. 3. He may be bigger, but he doesn’t look similar to his father, who we know is the original Groot. So, why does Groot look different in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

As James Gunn noted, Groot is stockier, bulkier, and more muscular than his father. They call him YA (for young adult) Groot. This implies that this could be a creative decision on the part of James Gunn and his team, as it allows him to be different from his father.

But the one thing that should be taken into consideration is that his face still looks similar to Teen Groot, as this further proves that he is still in his late teens or young adult years in terms of Earth Years. In that regard, you could think of Groot as a human male that discovered the gym late in his teens and is now looking swole despite the fact that he still has the face of a teen. As Kraglin noted in the Holiday Special, Groot may look big, but he’s still just a kid.
