When a show has carved out a reputation for pulling in exceptional voice talent, each new casting announcement becomes an event unto itself. ‘Invincible’, the Prime Video animated series based on Robert Kirkman’s beloved Image Comics run, has consistently attracted some of the most recognizable names in the business, threading them into a superhero world that refuses to play by the usual rules. The series stars Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, with Sandra Oh and J.K. Simmons voicing his parents Debbie and Nolan. Against that backdrop, any new addition to the ensemble carries genuine weight.

The adaptation has continued building momentum with every season, with Season 4 recently landing in the Top 10 across more than 50 territories worldwide, cementing ‘Invincible’ as one of the most exciting animated properties currently running. Since Season 2, the series has consistently returned on an annual basis, successfully avoiding the kind of lengthy hiatuses that tested fan patience in its earlier years. That goodwill has created a passionate audience that treats every piece of news from the show’s universe as appointment viewing.

The latest announcement is the kind that sends ripples through both superhero animation circles and the broader genre fandom. During Prime Video’s first-ever panel at the Annecy Animation Festival, executive producer and co-showrunner Robert Kirkman revealed that Jack Quaid will voice Gravitator/Chris in Season 5, sharing a first-look image of the character with those in attendance. Quaid, best known for playing Hughie Campbell across the full run of ‘The Boys’, becomes the first actor from that series to cross over into ‘Invincible’s animated world.

Gravitator/Chris is described as a gifted engineer who channels his talents into thievery before a pivotal encounter with Invincible changes the direction of his life entirely. In the source comics, Chris was a factory worker who built advanced anti-gravity equipment from spare parts and robbed a bank in a desperate attempt to fund an engagement ring, only to be caught in the act by Invincible, who chose to let him go upon recognising that he was driven by desperation rather than malice. It is exactly the kind of morally textured, underdog character that Quaid has shown a particular gift for inhabiting across his career.

The casting is made even more compelling by Quaid’s existing voice-acting experience, having already voiced Clark Kent in ‘My Adventures with Superman’ and demonstrated emotional warmth and nervous energy in ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’. The character of Gravitator lets him blend those qualities into a redemption arc, which fans of his ‘Boys’ work will find instantly familiar. The announcement also arrived alongside a piece of even larger news for the franchise. Kirkman and Prime Video head of animation Melissa Wolfe confirmed that ‘Invincible’ has been renewed for a sixth season before its fifth has even premiered, making it the streamer’s longest animated series to date.

Kirkman addressed the renewal directly, saying “there’s still so much story left to tell” and teasing what fans can expect in Seasons 5, 6, and beyond. The creator has previously indicated plans for the show to run for roughly eight seasons, meaning this renewal places the series squarely at its midpoint with the most consequential chapters of the source material still ahead. Season 5 is currently set for a 2027 release, though Prime Video has not yet announced a specific release window.

Whether you think Gravitator is the perfect fit for Quaid’s particular brand of endearing underdog energy or a surprising swing for a show that usually leans into chaos, share your take on this casting in the comments.
