What happens to Kakashi in Boruto?
On the day of Naruto’s inauguration as Hokage, to which the latter did not show up due to having been knocked out earlier, having no time to wait, Kakashi asked Konohamaru Sarutobi to impersonate for Naruto so that the festivities can go ahead as planned. Now retired from all active duty, Kakashi continued to assist in village affairs and advise his successor. In the anime, when he got wind of the mysterious attacks on the village, Kakashi began to investigate the incident and learned that it was a Root project.
The two spoke with Shikamaru about the inquiry after submitting their findings to Naruto at the Hokage’s office. Now that the project was almost finished, Kakashi realized that the perpetrator wanted to release Nue on the hamlet, so he set out to discover the dishonest pupil. When Kakashi arrived in Senju Park, the creature’s tail was instantly severed, causing dozens of tiny tails to appear on their own. These tails were utilized by the creature to suck chakra from Sai’s soldiers. Kakashi formed the group to battle the beast after rescuing them.

Kakashi stopped Naruto from fighting when he got there, telling him that the thing was trying to accumulate enough chakra to set off a huge explosion and wipe out the community. The shinobis were attempting to control the beast, but to Kakashi’s amazement, it teleported away. Although this monster was a summon, he reasoned that it usually lived in a parallel dimension, making it impossible for anyone to follow it.
Guy, Mirai Sarutobi, and Kakashi departed for the Land of Hot Springs on the day of the Five Kage Summit in Konoha. Later, the group arrived in the Land of Hot Springs, where they discovered an annual festival or competition that divided the community into two camps on its origins: some said it was a cat spirit, while others thought it was a dog spirit. By creating a cat-dog ghost that instructed the villagers to put an end to their dispute using katon and genjutsu, Mirai was able to put an end to the mayhem.
When Guy believed the genjutsu to be a demon and attacked him, he accidentally knocked down the main wall dividing the town, convincing the villagers that it was a sign for them to truly come together. Afterwards, Kakashi praised Mirai for combining his parents’ skills. While relaxing in a public bath, Kakashi was contacted by Naruto who told him about a strange boy who possessed the Sharingan. Kakashi thought Orochimaru might know something and asked Yamato to find out.
During a stop at an inn, they met a young orphan girl named Tatsumi who, despite her lack of money, was determined to visit every hot spring in the land in memory of her late mother. At Mirai’s request, it was agreed that the little girl could join them on their own journey. Later in the trip, Tatsumi and Mirai slipped away in hopes of reaching a nearby hot spring ring that was rumored to allow people to talk with their loved ones in the past.
Kakashi and Guy soon tracked them down and learned that the hot spring was just a ruse devised by the remnants of the nearly forgotten Jashin Cult to restore their former glory and power. Kakashi, along with Guy and Mirai, quickly defeated the zealots. Later, it was revealed that Kakashi and Guy’s vacation was actually a cover for their work with the Land of Hot Springs to uncover the truth about the missing girls.
At an inn in the Land of Fire after the ordeal, Kakashi spoke on the phone with Naruto, telling him that they were to return to Konoha later that day. Naruto in turn told him about the resolution of another case and Kakashi was happy with the outcome. The subject was broached with Mirai and Kakashi concluded that she had done an excellent job escorting him and Guy.
Kakashi offered his services as an invigilator for the upcoming graduation exams, so he disguised himself as “Sukea”, a freelance reporter who interviewed various students to better understand their respective future prospects. After class, Kakashi reunited with Boruto, who helped him meet the students. As Boruto marveled that his classmates all had future plans, with some as ninja and others deciding to pursue goals outside of ninja work, Kakashi remarked to him that if the world had fewer ninjas needed, ninja skills could prove invaluable in other areas.
Later, while talking with Iruka in his office, the latter suggested to Kakashi not to be too hard on the students during the final exams. Kakashi clarified that even in times of peace, they couldn’t allow students with a contemptuous attitude to become shinobi and therefore would be tougher than ever. During the practical test of the exams, the students were amazed that the Sixth Hokage was their main supervisor.
They were told that if Shino Aburame, Anko Mitarashi, and Konohamaru Sarutobi evaluated the respective performances of the students in clashes on the field in the coming 24 hours, only one student could pass and that student would be the one who took the only bell that Kakashi wore on the belt. While others took offense to this, Kakashi insisted that they already had enough shinobi in this era of peace.
As the ordeal began many students rushed in, Boruto quickly found Kakashi and fiercely attacked him, but the ex-Hokage saw through his tactics. While admitting that Boruto was truly a genius far superior to the rest of his generation, he was still missing one very crucial aspect to deserving of being a ninja, quickly bringing the boy down. Kakashi explained to him that a ninja without determination could only condemn himself and that Boruto was solely responsible for the laziness and carelessness of his classmates.
To prove his point, he revealed himself to be Sukea, showing that he knew Boruto well. As Boruto continued to fight to free himself from the Sixth Hokage’s grip, his classmates provided him with enough distraction to escape. Later, after understanding the meaning of Kakashi’s words and listening to his friends’ encouragement, Boruto devised a plan to rescue his captured comrades and pass the test, fulfilling the true purpose of it. Boruto engineered a group assault on Kakashi, but Kakashi quickly figured out the scheme, easily fending off the entire class’ group assault on him.
However, it was a ruse that lured Kakashi into a group formation, the Lightwire Circle. Impressed, Kakashi attempted to fend them off with a volley of lightning, but the students refused to let the technique be broken, even being knocked down to the ground. Eventually, time passed before anyone could get the bell. Despite Boruto’s plan failing, Kakashi passed everyone through, happily noting that while they actually had no chance of taking the bell, they had passed the real purpose of the test: teamwork and loyalty.

Kakashi learned that Sasuke, who was often on the move, had come back to the village and was having communication issues with his daughter when Konoha introduced a new celebration called Family Day. Kakashi then decided to assist her by utilizing methods from his Icha Icha series after realizing that Sasuke knew very little about his daughter because he had been absent for the majority of her life.
The retired Hokage suggested that Sasuke seek guidance from Sakura, who understood him best, after quickly seeing that these notions were better suited to a love pair as they only succeeded in driving a wedge between Sasuke and his daughter and further anger Sasuke toward Kakashi. family. They discovered that Kaguya’s creation of the fabled White Zetsu Army was simply an extra safeguard against an impending threat as their investigations into Kaguya progressed. Kakashi joined Guy and Iruka for the Chunin Exam finals in Konoha after attending a village meeting with Naruto. Kakashi assisted in rescuing the onlookers when Kinshiki and Momoshiki ÅŒtsutsuki stormed the stadium.
In the anime, after the attackers were defeated and Konoha recovered from the assault, another Five Kage Summit was organized. Kakashi was present along with the other former Kage, who came together to discuss the ever-looming Ōtsutsuki threat. When two chūnin guardians were assaulted by unknown attackers the following morning, the whole village was completely closed off.
Kakashi worked alongside Naruto and his counselors to watch over Ino while she questioned a guard for information, finding out that Mitsuki departed voluntarily with the assailants. Many people were shocked to find that Mitsuki was truly Orochimaru’s son when Naruto made the revelation to the public after keeping the knowledge a secret. Naruto was allowing the son of the man who killed the Third Hokage to reside in Konoha. Naruto defended this choice by pointing out that Orochimaru had changed and had even helped with the ÅŒtsutsuki probe. Despite this, the conference came to an end with the Oto-born youngster being perceived as a threat due to Orochimaru’s unpredictable character.
Kakashi generally approved of Naruto’s actions, noting that the boy would never do anything to endanger the village and that the elders would not have even considered leaving the boy in the village if they had known the whole story from the beginning as the council and the Hokage continued to discuss how to handle this situation. Shikadai informed his father over the phone that Iwa was invaded as part of Noki’s scheme. Kakashi and Tsunade were assigned to meet with the other Grand Villages to request their assistance in resolving this private situation, but they knew they couldn’t move quickly.
