Jujutsu Kaisen: Explaining the Playful Cloud – The Staff That Megumi Brought to Maki!

The world of Jujutsu Kaisen is filled with numerous cursed tools and objects that help Jujutsu sorcerers in various situations. Although not all of them, some cursed tools are weapons and useful in fights. These range from normal weapons to cursed tools that jujutsu sorcerers use to surpass their opponents in battle. As you might have deduced by now, the article will focus on one specific cursed tool that is also a weapon, and the item question is the Playful Cloud, which is also one of the most powerful cursed tools in the series. In this article, you are going to find out everything about it.
The Playful Cloud is one of the most powerful cursed tools
As we have said in the introduction, cursed tools are a very important aspect of the Jujutsu Kaisen lore, and they are exceptionally powerful objects that are used by jujutsu sorcerers. And while not every cursed tool is a weapon, many of them are, which is why they are often very dangerous. Among them, some have become extremely notorious, and one of them is the Playful Cloud, which is said to be one of the most powerful cursed tools. Now that we have explained this, let us tell you about the Playful Cloud.
The Playful Cloud is a red tri-stick with each section decorated with a black flame-shaped pattern near the black metal ends. Chains connect each section of the tri-stick. The weapon is worth at least 500 million yen, making it one of the most valuable cursed tools. It is the only S-Grade cursed tool that does not contain a spell but is exceptionally powerful and valuable, adding more to its value. It is a weapon that only causes physical damage, and its striking force depends on the muscular power of its user.
As you can see, the Playful Cloud doesn’t seem like much. It is a normal weapon, has no additional skills or abilities, and has no cursed energy whatsoever, and yet – it is an S-Grade cursed tool, and many would kill to possess it. So, what’s the catch? Why would powerful curses or jujutsu sorcerers fight over a normal tri-stick with no powers? Well, while the Playful Cloud doesn’t have any cursed energy itself, it is exceptionally powerful, and in the hands of a powerful user, it becomes a deadly weapon.
This was best seen during the fight against Dagon. When Maki used it, it was effective against Dagon’s endless shikigami, but not against Dagon himself, as Maki was not powerful enough to fight the powerful S-Grade curse. But when Toji arrived and took over the weapon, the situation was completely different. Toji combined his unique powers with the weapon, allowing him to deal with Dagon relatively easily, as the S-Grade could not do anything against him in battle. Toji also used it to kill himself, as he could “transform” the staff into blades.
How did Maki get the Playful Cloud?
The ownership history of the Playful Cloud is as interesting as its powers and abilities. As said, the Playful Cloud initially belonged to Toji Fushiguro, a member of the Zenin family; this will be important later in the story. Using the Inventory Curse, Toji stored the tool inside it and had it by his side all the time, which made him so dangerous.
But, as Toji was finally beaten and killed by Gojo, the Inventory Curse was set free, and it went over to Geto, who then absorbed it. Thus, Geto became the owner of the Playful Cloud. Soon, Geto becomes a villain, and after a while, he launches his plan to destroy all non-sorcerers but is eventually stopped by Yuta and killed by Gojo. He used the Playful Cloud in his fight against Yuta but lost the fight, and as Gojo killed him, the latter took the powerful weapon.
As Toji was a Zenin, the Zenin clan claimed (rightful) ownership of the tool, but everyone knew that giving the tool to them was not the most prudent thing one could do. Gojo then used his position and influence; while the tool was returned to the Zenin clan, Gojo ensured that it ended up in Maki’s hands and not in the hands of some other family member. And this is how Maki got it.
She would later trade it with Megumi when they fought Hanami, so Megumi also became the owner of the Playful Cloud at one point in the story. During the Goodwill Event, it was also temporarily possessed by Aoi Todo. After that, Megumi is the one who seemingly kept it and returned it to Maki when they fought Dagon in Shibuya. Ultimately, it was taken once again by Toji, who used it to butcher Dagon, showing that – as the original owner of the tool – he was its most skilled user.
