Jujutsu Kaisen: Is Yuta Still a Special Grade Sorcerer Without Rika? Explained!

We have already written many times about Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Yuta Okkotsu here on Fiction Horizon, and it makes sense that the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and the original protagonist of the whole series (as envisioned by Akutami before Yuji was created) is so popular. This article will also be about Yuta, as we will discuss his skills and abilities in the series. We know that Yuta was a powerful special-grade sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, but since he is now without Rika, this status can be debated. In this article, we are going to reveal the current state of things.

Is Yuta still a Special Grade, now that Rika is gone?

We have gone over Yuta’s powers briefly in our earlier articles, which means that we can now answer the principal question of this article, which is related to his grade in the series. Now, if you remember, Yuta Okkotsu was initially classified as a Special-grade jujutsu sorcerer because he had Rika with him, and we know very well that Rika was a special-grade cursed spirit. With her at this side, Yuta was one of the strongest characters in the series, and even Suguru Geto, with all his experience and his curses, was unable to defeat Yuta and Rika.

But, as we know, after winning against Geto, Yuta “released” Rika, and he lost her as his aide in battle, which significantly decreased his skills. Sure, he went abroad with Miguel to train further and hone his skills, and while he did come back stronger, he was not as strong as he was when Rika was around. We have explained that the focus of his current abilities is his technique that allows him to copy other techniques, as well as his amazing swordsmanship skills; his signature weapon is a katana.

So, based on all of that, is Yuta Okkotsu still a Special-grade sorcerer? Well, officially, he has not been re-classified, so if you take a look at the official sources, Yuta is still listed as a Special Grade. And this makes sense, actually, since he was abroad and there was no time to officially reevaluate his powers, so he simply remained a special grade like he was in Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

But is that correct? Well, probably not. The principal reason why Yuta was classified as a special grade was Rika; Yuta’s own skills at the time were quite low, and he wouldn’t have been classified as a Special Grade had Rika not been there. Naturally, with her gone, he lost these skills, although he has managed to further increase them while he was training abroad, so he is now certainly better than he was initially. So, what is his current grade, then?

Well, officially – we don’t know. Akutami still has him listed as a special grade, so we don’t have an official reevaluation here. Based on his current skills and abilities, i.e., what little we’ve seen him fight in the post-Shibuya arcs, we can definitely confirm that Yuta is not a Special Grade sorcerer, but as he was able to survive the Culling Game and defeat Kenjaku, we assume that he is somewhere around Grade 1 or, perhaps, a low-tier Special Grade 1 sorcerer. He is certainly stronger than most, and we can see him fight on the same level as Nanami and Mei Mei or – perhaps – some of the Zenin clan members.

On top of that, there is the fact that Gojo once confirmed – that Yuta has the potential to surpass him and is among a very small and elite group of sorcerers with such potential. Seeing how Yuta intends to keep on growing, we do think that he will once again reach his Special Grade status, but he is not there yet. And that is the whole story of Yuta’s status in the series in terms of his rank.
