Jujutsu Kaisen is known for its powerful characters and its brilliant fights, some of which are among the best animated in the history of anime. The second season is on the way after the first one premiered a while ago and the prequel movie became a great success, and while we’re waiting for that, we have decided to compare two extremely powerful characters from the series. One of them is Yuta Okkotsu, the protagonist of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie and, currently, a very important manga character, while the other is Satoru Gojō, who needs no further introduction. Who would win, Yuta or Gojō?
Despite Yuta’s powers, Satoru Gojō would still be able to defeat Yuta. Overpowered or not, Satoru Gojō is undoubtedly the strongest Jujutsu Kaisen character, as he himself has stated that he could defeat even a fully-powered Sukuna. Yuta is, on the other hand, respected by Gojō, who considers him his only potential successor.
Now that you have the short version of the answer, the rest of the article is going to be divided into three sections, with the first two introducing the characters, their powers, and their abilities. In the end, we’re going to give our final verdict and explanation on why Satoru Gojō would win against Yuta Okkotsu.
Overall Skills
Yuta is one of the four S-class exorcists recognized by the Exorcism School. While being haunted by the spirit of Rika (whom he unintentionally cursed), Yuta was immediately registered as an S-Class due to Rika’s immense power. He seemingly overpowered all of Kyoto’s students in the 29th Tournament and was able to defeat Suguru after releasing Rika’s Power Limiters. Satoru has stated that Yuta has the potential to surpass him.
When confronting Yuji Itadori, Naoya Zen’in, and Choso, the last two high-level exorcism users recognized that Yuta was much more powerful than them. Naoya in particular, who prides himself on his abilities, quickly allies himself with Yuta to avoid any potential conflict. Choso advised Yuji to flee at all costs because fighting Yuta would ensure his death, comparing his strength to Satoru’s. However, Yuta reveals that he is a rather weak person and lacking in strength, which he compensates for by empowering himself with Dark Energy.
Satoru is said to be one of, if not the most powerful sorceres in the series, wielding both immense amounts of cursed energy and a dangerously powerful technique. As a student, both Satoru and Suguru were considered “the strongest”, capable of overpowering experienced and older Curses and Jujutsu Sorcerers.
After realizing the true power of his powers and honing them, Satoru’s power greatly increased to the point where he was able to beat Toji Fushiguro who previously could easily overpower Satoru and Suguru. Growing up, he eclipsed Suguru’s power, with the latter admitting that Satoru had truly become the “only strongest”. Suguru also stated that Satoru had the ability to kill all of humanity single-handedly, where he couldn’t.
Overall, it makes sense that the teacher is stronger than the student. At this moment, Gojō is still the better one in this category and although Yuto might surpass him one day, Gojō gets the point at this moment.
Points: Yuta 0, Gojō 1
Jujutsu
Yuta’s power comes from his relationship with Sugawara no Michizane, but first manifested when he transformed Rika into a vengeful spirit. Rika became such a powerful spirit that Suguru, an avid collector of powerful plagues, dubbed her the “Queen of Plagues”. As a flail, Rika has unlimited black energy that can be shaped into any technique.
While controlling Rika’s full power, Yuta performs high-level exorcism despite being a novice student. Indeed, as someone who had only recently studied exorcism, Yuta had yet to learn the ropes of controlling his dark energy. He quickly learned to channel some of it into his ring or katana, but often relied on Rika’s full power rather than finely controlling it on his own.
Although Rika’s curse detached from him, Yuta retained the immense amount of Dark Energy. He admitted that the amount of his Dark Energy was even greater than Satoru’s. However, Yuta’s energy depletes much faster unlike that of his teacher, who can handle the energy expenditure perfectly thanks to his Sixth Eye.
After his year abroad, Yuta returned to Japan with much greater control of his dark energy. He made up for his lack of physical strength by empowering his entire body and weapon with a constant stream of Dark Energy during his fights. This state greatly increases his strength and speed and renders his opponents unable to read his energy flows and therefore predict his movements.
Each of Yuta’s attacks possesses incredible destructive power, and he can keep all damage dealt to him to a minimum. By falling to the ground with his reinforced body, Yuta can shatter the ground creating an impact. Additionally, his enhanced physical skills are enhanced to such an extent that he rivals Yuji’s natural physical prowess. He also matches Yuji’s lightning speed while carrying a katana. He even threw a car at Yuji after the latter threw one first.
Satoru is known within exorcist society as the most powerful exorcist. He got this pseudonym because of the immense amounts of occult energy and powerful techniques he possesses. Satoru’s occult energy is large enough to use Territory Expansion multiple times a day, unlike other exorcists.
He has excellent control over his occult energy, being able to activate his Territory Extension in a fraction of a second, use the inversion spell, and even combine positive and negative occult energy.
This is the most important category on this list and Gojō still tops is without a problem. Yuta’s potential is certainly going to grow, but until it reaches its peak, Gojō wins the points.
Points: Yuta 0, Gojō 2
Fighting Skills
During his school years, he was not noted for the use of force and used to be quite weak in this area. He even proved to have too many complications after trying to escape while carrying Maki Zen’in and two other children in his arms. However, he was shown to possess incredible agility during hand-to-hand combat which allowed him to deliver various, albeit simple, blows to his opponent.
His strength level can be greatly increased when he is subjected to his insane outbursts. From the beginning, he has been shown as someone too weak and with low resistance. However, after being trained by Maki Zen’in, he upgraded the level of his durability, allowing him to endure long periods of battle even though his body is severely injured.
Satoru Gojo, in addition to his overwhelming level of cursed energy, is also an incredibly formidable martial arts master, with extraordinary physical prowess to back up his skills. He was able to completely overpower Jogo in melee, delivering several pinpoint attacks to the flail’s killspots.
He was even able to fight and largely overpowered Jogo and Hanami in close combat, easily countering their attacks and delivering powerful blows that quickly forced them into submission.
Surprise, surprise, Gojō takes the points once again in this category as well. Yuta is not a physically imposing fighter, whereas Gojō is an absolute beast, which is why the latter wins this one easily.
Points: Yuta 0, Gojō 3
Speed and Reflexes
He has a high level of speed that usually works in his favor during various combats. His agility allows him to move very quickly across the battlefield and move around it without much effort. His speed level is limited when he must carry others in his arms. His speed increases dramatically when he is subjected to his insane outbursts, even being able to match Suguru Geto’s abilities.
In addition to his speed, he possesses an incredible level of reflexes from him, which allows him, most of the time, to react quickly and be able to block powerful attacks from his opponents. He is able to combine his speed and reflexes in order to avoid deadly attacks.
Gojo has great speed, managing to follow the movements of an S-class flail effortlessly, and throwing almost imperceptible punches and kicks. He has been shown to be able to move faster than the eye can perceive, and in his greatest feat of speed, covered a great distance from a fight and returned to the battlefield before until his opponent realizes he was even gone in the first place.
At this moment, this is a category where Yuta comes closest to Gojō, but he doesn’t surpass his speed either. Result? Gojō wins this category as well, as Yuta still has some work to do to catch up to him.
Points: Yuta 0, Gojō 4
Intelligence
He is a young man with a keen interest in learning and has shown himself to be able to adapt quickly to the teachings of the Tokyo school. He is able to process both his practical and theoretical classes very quickly, becoming able to apply them during combat. However, due to his low level of learning, he has certain problems with fully handling the immense amount of cursed energy he possesses.
Thanks to his ability to copy the techniques of others, he is able to make use of various types of cursed techniques. Despite not knowing how he acquires the information to use said techniques, he has shown to be able to use them to great effect.
Satoru proved quite tactical and showed he was able to figure out what his opponent was planning with just enough information. He’s also shown to be extremely adaptable to virtually every enemy he’s faced so far, knowing exactly what to do to counter their techniques and defeat them.
Although Yuta is not less intelligent than Gojō, Gojō has far more experience than Yuta and he would easily outmaneuver him in a fight, finding a way to subdue his powers and abilities.
Points: Yuta 0, Gojō 5
Is Yuta stronger than Gojō?
And now for the most important and interesting section of our article – the analysis. Here, we are going to use what we have found out about these two characters and analyze how all these facts would (or would not) help them in a fight against each other. Let us continue.
The answer to this question is quite simple at this moment, as Gojō is indeed stronger than Yuta. Yuta has himself admitted that he is not a fighter, but he has so much Cursed Energy in him that he is a proper threat to anyone. Gojō himself has recognized that and has acknowledged Yuta’s potential, stating even that Yuta might surpass him one day. He has never said anything similar about anyone else (he said that he could beat a fully-powered Sukuna, although he’d have to put in some effort).
And while that is absolutely true about the future, Yuta is still not on Gojō’s level. Gojō has more experience and is better at using his powers, which puts him above Yuta without a doubt. Yuta is probably the strongest among the students, but it will take him some more time to eventually surpass his mentor. We’re not sure that is going to happen, but we’re looking forward to seeing it; for now, Gojō clearly takes this one.
