Jujutsu Kaisen: What Happens to Mechamaru? Is He Dead?
Mechamaru, i.e., Kokichi Muta, was a Jujutsu sorcerer from Kyoto who turned out to be a traitor, but not a villain, at the same time, which speaks about the complexity of Akutami’s narrative in Jujutsu Kaisen. After fulfilling his part of the deal, he was healed and given a normal body by Mahito, whom he then engaged in a fight. After the fight ended, Mechamaru seemingly died, but he could still communicate with his friends from Kyoto and his allies from Tokyo. So, what happened to Mechamaru? Did he die? Keep reading to find out everything you need to know.
In order to restore his own body, Mechamaru became a spy for Kenjaku
The discovery of a traitor during the Goodwill Event is essentially where the story of Mechamaru’s ultimate demise actually starts. The only conclusion that could be drawn from Utahime’s investigation—and the only conclusion that turned out to be accurate—was that Mechamaru, also known as Kokichi Muta, was a traitor who was providing crucial information to the adversaries, or the evil organization headed by Kenjaku (Pseudo-Geto). And while the facts were clear, everyone wondered why Mechamaru would do such a thing, especially to his friends from Kyoto. The reasons were revealed in Chapter 79 of the manga.
In that specific chapter, Mechamaru finally meets with Mahito and Pseudo-Geto (actually Kenjaku) upon arriving at a hidden location and tells them that they thought they had decided to betray him. Following a protracted discussion and Mahito’s attempts to avoid fulfilling his part of the deal, the two finally decide to implement Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration technique to cure his original body as part of the Binding Vow they made together in exchange for the information Mechamaru has given them.
But right after Mahito restored Mechamaru’s body, a fight ensued. Namely, it was revealed then that Mechamaru was never a true traitor, nor did he join the villains. Sure, he did leak information to the villains, but this was due to personal reasons. And while he was an ass towards the guys from Tokyo, he still cared enough for his Kyoto Metropolitan Curse Technical College classmates, so he ensured they were safe. So, as soon as he got what he wanted, he wanted to eliminate the villains, and that is when the fight began.
He then clashed with Mahito and was close to defeating him
So, how did this fight play out? Mechamaru started by sending many robotic dolls meant to be a diversion. They didn’t have souls, so Mahito’s Innate Technique didn’t work on them, but they managed to divert his attention for long enough for Mechamaru to appear to vanish. As the earth beneath Mahito and Geto began to collapse, Mechamaru readied another attack while Mahito believed he had escaped. Suddenly, the two stood before a sizable dam facing a monstrous robot. This massive robot was Mechamaru’s Mechmaru Mode: Absolute, a formidable machine with deadly weapons.
As Mechamaru and Mahito engaged in combat, Pseudo-Geto activated a veil that hindered Mechamaru from communicating with the outside world, especially Gojo, whom Mechamaru intended to summon to help him in the battle. However, Mechamaru still had a plan to eliminate at least Mahito. They were both excited about the battle. Mechamaru began with his formidable Absolute Cannon, which seriously hurt Mahito but did not kill him. Mahito changed his feet to deflect the blow. However, they also knew that they each held a trump card because they both knew that just these cursed energy strikes wouldn’t defeat Mahito.
Since Mahito’s body could always regenerate, Mechamaru needed to reach his soul to kill him, while Mahito needed to penetrate his armor to kill Mechamru. What happened then? Well, Mahito used his body-morphing powers to hurt the robot as Mechamaru launched a series of attacks that he could either dodge or parry. Mahito eventually activated his Domain, trapping Mechamaru inside the robot so he could hit his opponent because the Domain gave him a sure hit. However, this was a ruse. Mahito was about to back down, believing he had the upper hand when the robot rose up and delivered a powerful strike to his torso.
We soon learned that Mechamaru had avoided being killed by using a Simple Domain to counteract Mahito’s Domain’s effects. However, Mechamaru then commits a deadly error: he lets his guard down. Mechamaru was happy, believing he had killed Mahito, but little did he realize that Mahito was still alive and had transformed, preparing for another attack. When Mechamaru finally tried to murder his opponent, Mahito was able to touch him, which ultimately caused Mechamaru’s death as well as the death of his mechanic puppet, which was in Kyoto.
Prepared for such an option, he had prepared small mechanical puppets that told his allies from Tokyo and his friends from Kyoto what happened and what his initial plans were, which later spoke to them after his death. So no, the little puppets do not mean that Mechamaru is still alive – sadly, he died while fighting Mahito before the Shibuya Incident began.
