Many interesting characters appear in SPY×FAMILY, and while the major focus has always been on the protagonist trio – Loid, Yor, and Anya – numerous side characters impacted the series and deserve some attention. One such character is the Swordsman, an elite assassin hired by Leonardo Hapoon to kill Olka and Gram Gretcher aboard the Princess Lorelei. In this article, you will find everything about the Swordsman and his role in the Cruise Adventure Arc, where he was a secondary villain. This article will provide you with the information you need about him.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • The Swordsman was an unnamed assassin who was a member of the group of assassins hired by Leonardo Hapoon to kill Olka and Gram Gretcher. His secret weapon was a katana he used with much skill.
  • The Swordsman was a quiet and practical man whose skills were immense. He was able to knock out Matthew and was able to fight with Yor on the same level, thus making him one of the more dangerous assassins.
  • He fought with Yor on the Princess Lorelei and was close to killing her, until she ultimately reminded herself why she was fighting, which gave her additional strength to kill the Swordsman with Anya’s help.

The Swordsman was one of the assassins that were hired to kill Olka and Gram

We on Fiction Horizon have already written several different articles about the assassins from the Cruise Adventure Arc, and we have told you what we knew about them in each of those articles. Sadly, the series rarely revealed much information about these individual assassins so we will tell you what we know so you can count on this article being the most informative source you’ll need for them.

So, how did these people – or, more specifically, the Swordsman – end up on the Princess Lorelei with the intention of killing Olka and Gram Gretcher? The answer to this question is related to the Gretchers, one of Ostania’s most influential families. Olka Gretcher was in charge of delivering illicit food to individuals on Ostania’s streets; her father and family generally dealt with the Underworld honourably.

Her father and siblings were slain in an internal battle despite her family’s superb leadership of the Underworld. This finally led to a leadership change, with Leonard Hapoon taking command and announcing his plan to remove the Gretcher family. Olka and her small boy, Gram, were soon the target of a bounty. This was the reason Olka had to leave with her son, despite the fact that assassins were around. And ithis answers the first question.

Now that we have answered this question, we can tell you a bit about the Swordsman’s role in the series. So, we know that he was part of the group of assassins hired by Hapoon to kill Olka and Gram, which were led by the unnamed Assassin Leader. He seems to be a quiet, pragmatical, efficient person, and loyal, as he isn’t a greedy maverick (like Sickle-and-Chain Barnaby) who wanted all the money for himself. The Swordsman was a swordsman by vocation, and he was exceptionally skilled, as we’ve seen during his fight against Yor. He also worked alongside the Assassin Leder, proving his loyalty to the cause.

So, what happened to him in the series? Well, during the cruise, the Swordsman engaged Yor and Matthew. He tried to slice them, but the two of them avoided the attack; nevertheless, the Swordsman could hit Matthew with the hilt of his sword, knocking him out for a while, as he continued to fight Yor. Yor lost her weapon early into the battle, and although she was able to block his attack with her leg, he seemed to gain the upper hand.

On top of that, Yor was facing an internal crisis, as she wasn’t sure why she was fighting this battle in the first place. Olka and Gram weren’t that important to her, so why was she doing it? The Assassin Leader asked her whether she would like to join them and share the bounty, but she refused and soon remembered Loid and Anya, deciding that she had to fight for their sake, as the two of them were her family now, despite all the circumstances. At one point, the Assassin Leader tried to attack her, but Matthew seemingly killed him after he woke up.

Yor then continued to fight the Swordsmand, and she soon received help from Anya, who returned her weapon to her. Yor and the Swordsman prepared for one last attack and they charged at each other. While the outcome wasn’t initially revealed, the fact that Anya heard Yor’s thoughts revealed that Yor had won this duel and that the Swordsman was defeated.

What happened to him in the end? The manga wasn’t clear, but from what we can understand, he was actually killed by Yor, and his story ended right there, on the Princess Lorelei, having been defeated by an exceptionally skilled and powerful assassin such as Yor.
