Who Is Black Frieza & How Strong Is He Compared to Other Dragon Ball Characters?

Share:

Ever since Dragon Ball Z started airing, one of the most popular characters has always been Frieza, even though he died in the middle portion of the DBZ anime. Nevertheless, due to his popularity, he was able to see a resurrection in Dragon Ball Super, as he immediately became a recurring villain that could always be a threat to Goku and his friends. As such, in the manga, he debuted a new form called Black Frieza. So, who is Black Frieza, and how strong is he compared to other Dragon Ball characters?

Black Frieza is Frieza’s newest form as he was able to expand his Golden Frieza transformation to become even more powerful. He achieved this form by training in a Hyperbolic Time Chamber on a different planet for ten years, which are just a few days in real time.

The arrival of Black Frieza changes the entire narrative of Dragon Ball Super because Goku and Vegeta now have to fight a villain who is far more powerful than even Gas, who they couldn’t even defeat in this arc. As such, the storyline will finally make Goku and Vegeta work harder than they ever did because the gap between them and Frieza had just become quite large.

Who Is Black Frieza?

Out of all of the different villains that the Dragon Ball storyline has ever seen, no one is more popular and more iconic than Frieza, who was one of the villains that blazed the trail for the transformation trope that has become quite the common theme in shonen anime. Of course, it was also the battle between Goku and Frieza that paved the way for the Super Saiyan transformation and the birth of extremely long battles in the anime world.

However, Frieza died shortly after his own arc as he was killed by Trunks in the Android Saga of Dragon Ball Z. But Frieza continued to stay popular in video games and among different groups of fans of the Dragon Ball anime long after Dragon Ball Z aired its final episode. And because Frieza was quite popular, Akira Toriyama and his crew decided to bring the galactic tyrant back early in the events of Dragon Ball Super.

Revived by the Dragon Balls through the help of his henchmen, Frieza revealed that he had never trained a single day in his life because he was already born strong. It was through intense training that he obtained his Golden Frieza form, which was a match for Goku and Vegeta while they were in their Super Saiyan Blue transformation. Eventually, Frieza perfected his Golden form such that he was able to match Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken x20 during the Tournament of Power.

The last time we saw Frieza, of course, was during the events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, as he was the one who brought Broly to the Saiyans so that he could beat them for him. But this plan backfired because Broly went berserk and made a punching bag out of him. And this was probably the event that eventually got Frieza to realize that he needed to train and become even stronger than he ever was.

Of course, Goku and Vegeta had already achieved powerful forms. Goku has achieved his Mastered Ultra Instinct state, while Vegeta underwent God of Destruction training to unlock Ultra Ego to match Goku’s most powerful form yet. But not even the two most powerful heroes in Dragon Ball could find a way to finally put Gas away during the Granolah the Survivor Arc. That’s because, as powerful as Goku and Vegeta were in their forms, Gas was more powerful because he had been wished to become the most powerful mortal in Universe 7, thanks to the Dragon Balls.

During the final battle in the latest arc in the manga, Goku and Vegeta were struggling to put Gas away, as the powerful fighter’s body was beginning to crumble down because his remaining lifespan was the price they had to pay for him to become the strongest in the universe. That was when Elec told Gas to quickly finish the Saiyans off before “he” arrived.

The “he” that Elec was referring to was Frieza, who Gas wished to fight decades ago due to a personal grudge he had over the galactic tyrant. Of course, Frieza arrived just in time as Gas was supposed to finish off Goku and Vegeta. Remembering that he long wanted to defeat Frieza, Gas attacked the villain but ultimately got stabbed in the chest and killed by the tyrant, who had achieved an entirely new form he called Black Frieza. So, who is Black Frieza in Dragon Ball Super?

Black Frieza is essentially the newest form that Frieza was able to accomplish in the storyline. He perfected Golden Frieza and reached a power level that was already well past the capabilities of his Golden form to achieve this Black form. And the way that Frieza achieved this form was rather interesting, considering that we all know that Gas was the strongest mortal in the universe after the wish that was made through the Dragon Balls

After Frieza last appeared during the events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, he spent time conquering planets all over the universe to expand his empire. That was when he discovered a Hyperbolic Time Chamber in one of the planets that he conquered.

For those who don’t remember, a Hyperbolic Time Chamber is a different dimension that doesn’t follow the same rules of time as the real world. This was introduced back in Dragon Ball Z as Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, and Gohan all spent time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber on Earth to prepare for the fight against the Androids and Cell. The chamber exists in a dimension outside of Universe 7 but could be accessed through doorways.

In that regard, Frieza discovered a doorway to this dimension in one of the planets he conquered. A single year in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber is just a day in the outside universe. As such, Frieza trained for ten whole years in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and that meant that only ten days had passed in the outside universe. That is why he had more than enough time to work on his new form and become stronger than even Gas himself through his Black Frieza form.

While we did say that Frieza became ultimately became stronger than Gas because of his Black Frieza form, it is worth mentioning that Gas was still wished by Elec and the Heeters to become the strongest mortal in the universe. If that’s the case, how is it possible that Black Frieza was still stronger than the strongest being in the universe?

Well, that’s because the wish was for Gas to become the strongest mortal in Universe 7. The Hyperbolic Time Chamber exists in a different dimension, and that means that Frieza was not in Universe 7 when the wish was made. So, because Frieza was not in Universe 7, there was no way for Gas to become stronger than someone who was not even in the same universe. That is why Black Frieza was still stronger than Gas.

How Strong Is Black Frieza Compared To Other Dragon Ball Characters?

When Black Frieza was introduced, he made quick work of Gas, who we know was powerful enough to make both Goku and Vegeta struggle while they were in their strongest forms. Black Frieza stabbed Gas through the chest using his hand and proceeded to crush his skull as the Heeter’s bones crumbled to the ground because his lifespan had already run out.

Of course, it is worth mentioning that before Black Frieza arrived, Gas was the strongest mortal in Universe 7 and was easily stronger than Granolah, Goku, and Vegeta. Both Goku and Vegeta have their Ultra forms, which are quite powerful and are probably strong enough for them to defeat Broly, who they couldn’t defeat using their Super Saiyan Blue forms.

Remember, in DBS: Broly, the Legendary Super Saiyan was basically toying with Golden Frieza, who himself was actually quite strong. In that regard, the fact that Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta are quite possibly stronger than Legendary Super Saiyan Broly but struggled against Gas means that Black Frieza is on an entirely different level and is far ahead the most powerful mortal in Universe 7.

Black Frieza didn’t take too long to prove himself the most powerful mortal in the universe by knocking both True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta with one blow to their respective abdomens. At this point in the Dragon Ball storyline, no other character has ever knocked out both Goku and Vegeta while they were both in their Ultra forms, as Black Frieza was the first to do so. This proves that Black Frieza has just reached an entirely new plane of power that both Goku and Vegeta need to reach if they want to thwart any evil plans that the tyrant has in his mind.
