Who Is Din Djarin’s Teacher, & How Did He Train Him?

Even though we already know a good deal about Din Djarin as a person, one of the things that we don’t know about him is the path he took to become a Mandalorian. We know that he was never a Mandalorian by birth because he was a foundling that was taken in as an apprentice by a Mandalorian during the Clone Wars. Of course, a teacher also taught him after he became old enough to recite the Creed. So, who is Din Djarin’s teacher?
Din Djarin’s teacher is an unnamed Mandalorian warrior. Still, it is possible that this Mandalorian was the same Death Watch member that rescued him from a droid attack during the Clone Wars. As such, this unnamed Mandalorian must have been the same teacher that he accompanied and trained under.
The life of a Mandalorian that is part of the Children of the Watch goes on in cycles due to how they take up apprentices after being an apprentice in the past. It is similar to how the Jedi take up Padawans after graduating from becoming Padawans themselves. As such, Din Djarin was once an apprentice to a Mandalorian teacher. Now, let’s try to learn more about Din’s teacher.
Din Djarin’s Teacher
One of the things that we learned early on in the events of The Mandalorian was that Din Djarin was not a Mandalorian by birth. That’s because he was once a foundling himself. This happened during the Clone Wars when the Separatists attacked his home planet of Aq Vetina when he was just a child. The Separatists and their droids presumably killed everyone in his home right after Din’s parents hid him in a hatch.
The hatch was then opened by a B2-series super battle droid, which attempted to fire on the child. Before it could, however, the battle droid was destroyed by a Mandalorian warrior with the Death Watch insignia on his shoulder plate. As much as the Death Watch were antagonistic to the Republic during the Clone Wars, they were honorable warriors who only wanted to bring back the traditional ways of the Mandalorians and were against the Separatists.
In that regard, it is possible that this Death Watch Mandalorian warrior was on the planet to fight the Separatists during the Clone Wars. Of course, the very same warrior flew Din off away. That was how he became a foundling under the Children of the Watch, which we learned from the Armorer, one of the splinter groups that branched off from Death Watch after the group disbanded a long time ago.
It was never mentioned whether or not this Mandalorian warrior was the same Mandalorian that adopted Din Djarin and allowed him to become his apprentice. Still, there’s a good possibility that he was his teacher. That’s because Mandalorian foundlings are often placed under the care and protection of the opens that found them. This is the case with Din and Grogu, as the child was placed under Djarin’s care because he was the one who found him.
So, if it was the same case with the Mandalorian that rescued Din Djarin from the Separatist droids years ago, it is possible that he was the one that also taught him the way of the Mandalorian. But the fact is that this Mandalorian warrior was never given a name. In fact, the only other adult Mandalorian in the Children of the Watch to have been named was the late Paz Vizsla. All of the other Mandalorians we’ve seen since the first season were never named.
It is even possible that this very same Mandalorian that rescued Din Djarin and probably taught him the ways of the Mandalore is no longer alive, considering that the events of the Clone Wars happened around three decades before the events of The Mandalorian. As such, there is a good chance that Din Djarin’s teacher and mentor is no longer alive
How Did Din’s Teacher Train Him?
Of course, the topic of Din Djarin’s teacher became hot among fans of The Mandalorian when this unnamed Mandalorian was mentioned during the end portion of the season 3 finale of The Mandalorian. This was when the Mandalorians had already defeated Moff Gideon and had taken back their home planet.
In that scene, the Children of the Watch were in the Living Waters of Mandalore to induct Ragnar Vizsla as a full member of the tribe by allowing him to say the Creed after he was so rudely interrupted by the turtle dinosaur back in the events of episode 1 of season 3. This time, no one was interrupting him anymore as Ragnar was able to recite the Creed.
Din Djarin stepped forward to tell the Armorer that he wished to include Grogu in the Song as an apprentice of the Mandalorians. However, the Armorer declined because Grogu was still far too young to recite the Creed. And the only way for Grogu to become a member of the tribe was for his parents to personally allow him to become an apprentice.
Because Grogu’s parents were far away or dead, Din adopted the child. That was when he became Din Grogu was now the adopted son of Din Djarin. After that, the Armorer ordered Din to leave Mandalore so that they may go on adventures together. The Armorer said that he grew as a Mandalorian through Din Djarin’s adventures with his teacher, and that was why he must do the same with Din Grogu.
In that regard, it can be implied that Din’s unnamed master trained him in the way of the Mandalore by bringing him along on his many different adventures and missions all over the galaxy when the young Djarin was still just a child. It was through his experiences on the field that Din Djarin grew into the Mandalorian that he is today.
This resembles how the Jedi trained their warriors when the Jedi Order was still around. A Jedi youngling must train in the Jedi Temple before becoming old enough to graduate into Jedi Padawan. After that, the Padawan must journey with a Jedi Knight or Master as an apprentice who would learn the Force’s ways more practically by working alongside a mentor.
As such, Din learned in a manner that was similar to how the Jedi became full Jedi Knights. His teacher had to bring him along on his missions all over the galaxy so that Din Djarin would understand what it meant to be a Mandalorian and how to fight like one. And now that he has taken Grogu as his adopted son and apprentice, Din Djarin now has to go on adventures with him while actively teaching him the way of the Mandalore.
