Who Is Simon in ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’?

We all know that Dungeons & Dragons has always been a storyline that tells how adventurers of different backgrounds come together for a common goal. That holds in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a live-action film based on the D&D lore. One prominent character in the movie is Simon Aumar, one of the more unique adventurers that form part of the group. So, who is Simon?
Simon is a half-elf sorcerer and the resident wizard of the questing party in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. He is also the great-great-grandson of Elminster Aumar, a legendary sorcerer. However, unlike his ancestor, Simon lacks the confidence that would have made him a great wizard.
Even though we know that Simon is capable of magical spells that are pretty handy, he isn’t necessarily one of the best wizards in the entire storyline, as his lack of self-confidence is one of the things that he needs to address in the movie. Of course, it is important to note that his knowledge and abilities still came in handy in the movie, especially when he and his friends were in a bind. Now, let’s learn more about Simon in Honor Among Thieves.
Simon Aumar’s Background Explained
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves follows a group of unlikely adventurers working together to achieve a common goal for the common good. One such character is Simon Aumar, who was already familiar with the duo of Edgin and Holga before the movie’s main events.
When Edgin started things off with a quick background of how he and Holga ended up in prison, he said they became petty thieves who stole from the rich but never hurt anyone. They eventually recruited two more people, one of whom was Simon Aumar. So, who exactly is Simon in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves?
As mentioned, the half-elf, Simon, was one of the original party members of Edgin’s band of thieves. In the past, he worked together with Edgin and the others to go on a quest that was commissioned by the powerful sorceress named Sofina, who wanted them to infiltrate Korrin’s Keep to acquire a powerful relic and to obtain the Tablet of Reawakening, which Edgin wanted to use to revive his deceased wife.
However, when things went wrong, Sofina used a time-stop spell that froze Edgin and Holga long enough for the authorities to capture them. Meanwhile, Simon escaped and went on to live the life of a petty stage magician for two years.
After Edgin and Holga broke out of prison, the first person that they wanted to recruit to bring down Forge, who was responsible for betraying them and was the one who had custody of Edgin’s daughter Kira, was Simon because they were already familiar with him. Holga, however, hesitated to recruit Simon because he was a terrible sorcerer.
What Happens to Simon in Honor Among Thieves?
Initially, Simon didn’t want anything to do with the quest to bring down Forge because he didn’t know whether or not he had the magical abilities that would allow him to match the incredible prowess of Sofina, who was secretly a Red Wizard. But he reluctantly joined the questing party because he realized he didn’t have enough money to survive another day. He even recommended recruiting Doric, a powerful druid that he once romantically courted.
The trio found Doric fighting off some of Forge’s Neverwinter soldiers in the forest. Simon reintroduced himself to Doric, who forgot about him after she rejected him long ago due to his lack of self-confidence. Doric was reluctant to join them but eventually did so when she learned that they were trying to bring down Forge, who was responsible for destroying a good part of the forest of her people.
After Doric found out that the vault to Forge’s treasure was protected by powerful magic, Simon said he didn’t have the power to open this vault. However, he still said something about the Helmet of Disjunction, which could dispel any enchantments within a limited area. But the twist was that he needed to attune the helm to use its power.
The questing party went to Evermoors Cemetery because Holga’s tribe, the Elk Tribe, once participated in the Battle of the Evermoors, where the Helm of Disjunction was last seen a hundred years ago. But before that, Holga stopped by his ex-husband Marlamin’s house to acquire some of her belongings, including a walking stick she once gave Marlamin.
Simon had a token that could reanimate the dead temporarily. However, they could only ask the dead a series of five questions before they returned to the dead once more. Through Simon’s magic, they found out that the helmet was with a Thayan named Xenk.
When they found Xenk, he was hesitant to help them until he found out that Sofina was a Red Wizard, and after, Edgin swore that he would give Forge’s treasure to the people. As such, he brought the questing party to the Underdark, where he hid the Helmet of Disjunction. On their way to the location of the helm, Simon accidentally destroyed the bridge that would have gotten them there. But when he saw that Holga’s walking stick was a Hither-Tither Staff capable of opening two portals connected, they could get to the location of the helmet.
After acquiring the helmet and escaping the Underdark, Simon tried to attune with the Helmet of Disjunction, only to see a vision of his great-great-grandfather Elminster Aumar, a powerful and legendary wizard. Elminster insulted him in his vision as Simon failed to attune with the helm. He tried doing so for hours until he failed, and that was when he broke down and berated Edgin for being selfish enough to force him into doing something he couldn’t do.
Edgin apologized to the group and devised a backup plan involving the power of the Hither-Tither Staff. They were able to open a portal to the treasury vault in Castle Never, only for the plan to fail because the portal directly faced a stone floor. That was when Edgin told Simon that he could attune with the helmet as long as he was in a life-and-death situation because that was when he was at his most powerful.
After getting chased by the castle guards that were out to kill him, Edgin tried using the helm once more and realized that the vision of his ancestor was a vision of himself. That was when Simon realized that the one person holding him back was himself, as that was when he was able to attune with the helm.
While Simon succeeded in entering the vault, they were caught in a trap that Forge and Sofina had set up. Edgin convinced Forge to allow them to enter the High Sun Games, a tournament everyone in Neverwinter watched. Simon could escape the arena with his friends and confront Forge, who was about to escape Neverwinter with Kira and his treasures. They prevented Forge from doing so and recovered Kira before attempting to escape Neverwinter.
But while they were escaping, Simon and the others saw evil magic in play in Neverwinter, as Sofina was about to turn everyone in the city into an army of undead soldiers. That was when they decided to return to the city. Using the Hither-Tither staff, Simon opened a portal between the boat, which carried Forge’s treasures, and Forge’s floating balloon to rain treasures down from the sky and lure people away from the arena, which was the epicenter of Sofina’s spell.
Simon and the others confronted Sofina, whose magic matched the four-on-one assault. However, Simon was now more confident than ever and could use powerful spells to equal Sofina’s spells. But when Sofina used her time-stop spell once more, that was when Simon tried and seemingly failed to absorb and contain the spell. They were seemingly frozen in time until Edgin fooled Sofina into coming close enough to him for him to snap on an ant-magic bangle that prevented the Red Wizard from using any of her spells.
It was revealed that Simon had gotten good enough to absorb and negate Sofina’s spell. Meanwhile, Doric arrived in her owlbear form to beat the Red Wizard down. Even though Edgin was forced to use the Tablet of Reawakening on a deceased Holga, who died after getting stabbed by a Red Wizard’s blade, the group succeeded in its mission, as Simon and the others were declared heroes of the city. Simon’s story ended when he attempted to court Doric again, only for her to respond more positively.
