Who Is Sofina in ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’?

While we know Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves focuses more on Edgin and his party’s Castle Never heist, which was supposed to bring Forge down from his position as the Lord of Neverwinter, there is something more important happening in the storyline. This side of the story involved Sofina, who was behind almost all of the events that involved Edgin and his friends. So, who is she?

Sofina is a human wizard that is part of the Red Wizards of Thay. During the movie, she disguised herself as a mysterious hooded woman so that the people in Neverwinter wouldn’t suspect she was a Red Wizard. Sofina worked alongside Forge in her attempt to turn the people of Neverwinter into undead slaves.

It was already made clear during the early part of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves that the Red Wizards were not good people and were always up to something evil and nefarious. In that regard, when Sofina revealed herself to be a Red Wizard, it was clear that she had something evil up her sleeves. So, with that said, let’s talk more about Sofina and what her role is in Honor Among Thieves.

Sofina’s Background Explained

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves didn’t take too long to introduce the plot of the movie as Edgin was quick to make a quick recap of what happened to him and Holga and why they had been incarcerated for two years. He revealed that he was forced into living the life of a thief after he lost his wife to the Red Wizards. In that regard, he had to raise his daughter Kira alone until Holga found them and took pity on the child. Then again, they were still dirt-poor, which was why they became thieves that stole from the rich and never hurt anyone in any of their heists.

The duo of Edgin and Holga eventually teamed up with a rogue named Forge and a sorcerer named Simon. Together, they formed a small band of thieves that participated in petty theft and small-time heists. However, things went south for them when they met a hooded lady named Sofina.

Sofina hired Edgin and the others to infiltrate Korrin’s Keep, a Harper fort. Because Edgin used to be a Harper, only he could enter the keep. And when he learned that the keep had something called the Tablet of Reawakening, capable of bringing the dead back to life, he decided to take on the mission without telling Kira why he needed to go.

Motivated by the idea of bringing his wife back from the dead, Edgin reached for the tablet in Korrin’s Keep, only for him to activate the warning system that alerted the guards that there were introducers. That was when Sofina started showing her true colors as she used Chain Lightning on the guards, even though she knew very well that Edgin and his band were against hurting or killing people.

When the guards were about to overwhelm them, Sofina used a time-stop spell that stopped time within a limited area. The spell affected both Edgin and Holga. Before getting caught in the spell, Edgin gave the tablet to Forge while also telling him to take good care of Kira. Forge, Simon, and Sofina escaped Korrin’s Keep, all while Edgin and Holga were apprehended by the authorities and sent to prison, where they spent two years.

Edgin and Holga escaped prison and found that Forge had become the new Lord of Nevermore. They decided to visit him so Edgin could see how Kira was doing. That was when he learned that Kira hated him because Forge had been feeding her lies for two years.

It was also revealed that Forge was the one who told Sofina to trap Edgin and Holga in the spell two years ago because he had already decided to throw in his lot with her. And right before Edgin and Holga could attack their treacherous comrade, Sofina used a spell that trapped them on the floor.

Forge ordered the guards to seize the duo and return them to prison. However, Sofina secretly told the guards to execute Edgin and Holga. Thanks to Holga’s quick thinking, they were able to escape execution. After that, the duo decided to form a questing party that would allow them to bring Forge down while escaping with Kira, Forge’s riches, and the Tablet of Reawakening.

Shortly after that, Sofina was seen speaking with a mysterious figure hiding in the dark, and it was revealed that she was a Red Wizard. Forge was always aware of this, so he prompted her to keep herself hooded in a black cloak to avoid alarming any of the people of Neverwinter, as Red Wizards were notorious for being nefarious sorcerers.

What Happened to Sofina in Honor Among Thieves?

The figure that Sofina was talking to was Szaas Tam, who is known as the leader of the Red Wizards of Thay and was the one responsible for turning almost all of the Thayans into undead slaves. That was when it was made clear that Sofina had her plans for Neverwinter, so she decided to ally herself with Forge and install him as the city’s lord. Forge, of course, was complicit to this, and that explains why he decided to bring back the High Sun Games.

Sofina eventually dispatched Thayan undead assassins to go after Edgin and his friends after discovering they had plans to infiltrate Never Castle. She understood that they were threats to her plans even though they weren’t privy to what she had planned for Neverwinter.

When the High Sun Games were about to start, Sofina was the one who captured Edgin and his crew after they successfully infiltrated the vaults of the castle. She was the one who told Forge to allow them to fight for their lives in the High Sun Games, as it was clear that she had plans for them.

While Edgin and his friends fought for their lives in the games, Sofina and Forge parted ways while telling the rogue to escape “her city.” That meant that Forge knew that Sofina had plans for the city and that he had never meant to hold on to his position of power for a very long time. Forge eventually decided to leave with Kira and his treasures before Edgin, and the others confronted him after they had escaped the arena.

Despite successfully escaping the city on Forge’s boat, Edgin and his friends decided to return when they found out that Sofina used the horn that she acquired in Korrin’s Keep two years ago as a way to perform a beckoning spell that was supposed to turn all of the people in the arena into mindless undead zombies under her command.

However, because Edgin had lured the people out of the arena using Forge’s treasure, Sofina had no choice but to confront the bard and his friends. She had the upper hand during the early part of the fight because her magic proved too powerful for any of the good guys to handle. But when Edgin and his friends decided to work together to overwhelm her, Sofina had no choice but to use the same time-stop spell she used two years ago, as Simon seemingly failed to contain the spell again.

Edgin and his friends appeared caught in the spell, which allowed Sofina to close the distance between her and the heroes. However, Edgin and the others were merely faking it so that he could find the opening he needed to snap on a magic-neutralizing bracelet on Sofina. Powerless without her magic, Sofina got pummeled into submission by Doric’s Owlbear transformation. We can’t say whether or not she survived Doric’s attack, but it is possible that she did so but was subsequently captured by the authorities.

Despite her defeat, Sofina forced Edgin to use the Tablet of Reawakening on Holga, who got stabbed by a Red Wizard’s blade. Instead of using the tablet to revive his deceased wife, Edgin used it on his best friend instead. Even in defeat, Sofina prevented Edgin from leaving with all the marbles.
