The rest of this article is going to provide further information on Tamayo. We are going to answer some questions and we are going to fully introduce her character so that you don’t have any dilemmas regarding Tamayo and her role in Demon Slayer.
Who Is Tamayo in Demon Slayer?
Tamayo is an important supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. She is a demon, a skilled medic, and a close ally of Tanjiro Kamado, although she was initially associated with Muzan Kibutsuji, the main enemy of the franchise.
This was, as the story later revealed, the result of a series of unfortunate events that saw Tamayo become a demon. We are going to talk about these events later in the article.
Little is known about Tamayo’s life as a human, except that she was married and had several children. Shortly before she became a demon, Tamayo fell ill with a life-threatening illness and was looking for a way to recover. Unbeknownst to his true intentions, Tamayo stumbled upon Muzan’s suggestion to “cure” her and she became a demon.
However, after the transformation, she lost her composure and killed her entire family. Realizing what she had done, she sank into despair and began to mercilessly devour many people. After an indefinite period of time, Tamayo regained some sanity and began to study methods of curing the demons.
After 200 years of training, she stumbled upon a sick boy and was able to turn him into a demon. This boy’s name was Yushiro and from the time of the experiment, he has remained as her assistant.
During the Infinity Castle Arc and the Sunrise Countdown Arc, Tamayo teams up with Yushiro and the Demon Slayer Corps to develop a drug that would help defeat Muzan Kibutsuji. She eventually manages to get her revenge on Muzan, betraying him for abusing her trust and turning her into a demon, which caused her to kill her family and some other humans as well.
Is Tamayo a Demon?
Although she started her life as a regular human, Tamayo eventually became a demon after coming into contact with Muzan Kibutsuji. Muzan was a mean character and he maliciously used Tamayo’s illness to turn her into a demon and then have fun with her; he did a similar thing to Tanjiro’s sister, but with a different outcome.
But, unlike most other demons, Tamayo never lost her “humanity” nor her good side; she couldn’t really control her demonic powers, but she never became a monster willingly. Her mind was broken at one point, but she never lost touch with her human side.
How Did Tamayo Become a Demon?
Not much is known about Tamayo’s way of life when she was human except that she was a married woman with children. Shortly before becoming a demon, Tamayo fell ill with a fatal illness and began to seek a cure, which is how she first met Muzan Kibutsuji.
Hiding his true intentions, Muzan offered to treat Tamayo’s illness and, when she naively agreed, quickly converted her into a demon and let her wander around town.
It is noteworthy that she killed not only her husband and children in a state of rampage as a demon, but a number of other humans as well. After realizing what she had done to her family, she fell into a void of despair.
Although the exact order of events is unknown, it was eventually seen that Tamayo apparently became a subordinate of Muzan and apparently became subservient to him, as seen during the confrontation of Muzan and the ensuing battle against Yoriichi Tsugikuni, where Tamayo is seen quietly standing next to Muzan in complete bondage as he jokes with the Demon Slayer.
Is Tamayo Related to Tanjiro?
Tamayo is not related to Tanjiro in any way, although the two of them were close allies. In fact, the first time Tamayo encountered Tanjiro was when he was holding back a newly transformed demon caused by Muzan.
Through his actions and words of compassion towards the demons, Tamayo was touched by his gesture and decided to aid him in his mission to kill Muzan Kibutsuji. This confidence was further strengthened when Tanjiro willingly aided Tamayo in achieving the goal of creating a drug that allows demons to become human again through blood research.
Who Is Tamayo to Muzan?
When they first met, Muzan transformed Tamayo into a demon in order to cure her illness, hiding from her the true consequences of the transformation and thereby causing the deaths of her husband and children. Much like Nezuko, Muzan sees her as a nuisance to him after she is released from his control and wants her killed.
He didn’t hesitate to poke fun at Tamayo about the murder of her husband and children, as well as lash out in desperation by killing other humans in the process, throwing all the blame on her without taking responsibility for it.
Before that, hundreds of years ago, Tamayo tried to kill Muzan. However, upon realizing that she had absolutely no chance of winning, Tamayo’s mental state was completely vanquished, her resolve and determination replaced with submissive and servant-like behavior.
However, after witnessing Yoriichi’s immense power and skill in her fight against Muzan, Tamayo’s determination to kill him was rekindled, leading her to refocus her efforts on defeating the Demon Lord and to resume his research into creating drugs to weaken or kill him.
Even in death and engrossed in Muzan, Tamayo made fun of him and did not disclose the details of the effects of his anti-Muzan and Shinobu concoction and forced him to scrutinize his memories and make them ineffective by its own analysis. Ultimately, however, Tamayo would take revenge for his death at the hands of the Demon Slayer Corps.
Does Muzan Love Tamayo?
Now that we know the nature of their relationship, we can confirm that Muzan never actually loved Tamayo. Tamayo is a character that was like a toy to Muzan.
He turned her into a demon to save her, but ultimately caused her great pain because he did not reveal the consequences of these actions to her, which ultimately resulted in Tamayo detesting Muzan. He would later mock her and abuse her, likewise abusing the fact that he had mentally broken her into becoming his servant.
