Is Akamaru Alive in Boruto? What Happened to Him?
Over the years, we at Fiction Horizon have written about many characters from the Naruto and Boruto series. Most of them are well-known names, even for those who are not fans of the series, but this article will be dedicated to one important yet relatively unknown character from the series. Incidentally, that character is also – a dog! Fans of the series might already know that we are going to talk about Akamaru, as we will tell you whether Akamaru is still alive in Boruto and what his story in the franchise is.
Akamaru is a very important character in the Naruto lore and is still alive and well in Boruto. However, he is now quite old and quite inactive, doing nothing aside from following Kiba around and sleeping most of the time. During Naruto, he was a very active character and participated in many missions and battles with Kiba.
The rest of this article is going to, of course, focus on Akamaru and his story in Naruto and Boruto. We will elaborate on what happened to him in the series but also give you some additional answers to some related questions concerning Akamaru. We must warn you that there will be a lot of spoilers ahead, so if you’re not fully up-to-date with the story, you should be careful how you approach the text.
What happened to Akamaru in Naruto?
When Kiba was 4 years old, his mother, Tsume Inuzuka, entrusted Akamaru to him. Despite Akamaru urinating on Kiba’s face almost immediately, and to the surprise of Kiba’s mother and sister, the two of them quickly became close, becoming best friends and fighting partners. Before he enrolls in the Shinobi Academy, Akamaru, and Kiba go to the forest, asking a boy named Yota why he throws lightning at them, answering that he doesn’t like dogs. Later, with Yota calmed down, Akamaru, Kiba, Naruto, Yota, Ino, Shikamaru, Chōji, and Sakura get ready to play.
In the early tests, Akamaru was at Kiba’s side when the latter fought Naruto Uzumaki. Despite the fact that Akamaru presented a challenge for Naruto, particularly after he changed into a Kiba clone, Naruto managed to trick both Akamaru and Kiba by changing into Akamaru and ambushing him. Naruto first transformed into Kiba to stop them from hitting him when Kiba utilized the Man-Beast Clone Jutsu maneuver and then into Akamaru to fool Kiba into thinking he had hurt Akamaru. Then, Kiba hit Akamaru while pretending to be Naruto. Akamaru and Kiba then ended up being eliminated from the competition in the finals.
Shikamaru asked for Kiba and Akamaru to be among those responsible for stopping Sasuke Uchiha from leaving Konoha. Kiba and Akamaru were picked as the group’s leaders because of their thorough knowledge of the Land of Fire and their strong sense of smell, which allowed them to detect enemy odors and avoid all roadside traps. While searching for Sasuke, Akamaru, and Kiba decided to stay with the group until they discovered the container. Still, when a tag exploded, both of them, Sakon and Ukon, fell into a cannon.
To avoid being possessed by Ukon and killing Akamaru as he started to lose control of his body, Kiba stabbed himself in the chest in an effort to kill Sakon. Kiba and Akamaru were attempting to run when Sakon and Ukon found them, then Kankuro arrived and executed the brothers. It took a while for Kiba and Akamaru’s wounds and injuries to recover. Kiba was motivated to improve since he didn’t want Akamaru to endure the pain again.
Akamaru helped in the search for any of the Uchiha brothers after it was decided that finding Itachi Uchiha was the best plan of action for locating Sasuke. Despite their efforts, they could not find Sasuke and returned to the village. When Pain invaded Konoha, Akamaru fought alongside Kuromaru and Kiba’s mother against the Preta Path. She and Kiba then reappeared after the battle to inform Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi that Danz had just been named the Sixth Hokage and had just given the order to kill Sasuke.

Together with his comrade Kiba, Akamaru serves in the Fifth Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces during the Fourth Shinobi World War. He is tasked with using several ninjas to form a backup unit for the Second Division. Akamaru and Kiba use their Piercing Fang jutsu to strike a part of the White Zetsu Army. The two are later seen by Neji, Hinata, and Shino as the day ends and night descends. Neji was so worn out that when Kiba urged him to stop by the Medical Division during the night watch, he answered Akamaru rather than Kiba, showing his awful condition. The following picture depicts Akamaru pulling Neji behind him.
Kiba later warned Neji that Hinata was in danger during the fights. Neji later acknowledged that “Hinata” was actually a White Zetsu that had been turned after failing to defend the character from an Iwa ninja. Kiba reprimanded Neji for taking the wrong route, and Akamaru and Kiba continued their search for Hinata. However, a shadow clone of Naruto intervened on the battlefield and saved Hinata before Kiba could reach her. Later, after journeying with the other Shinobi Alliance members to the place where the Jinchurikis were, Akamaru and Kiba appeared on the battlefield, leading the others in dealing with the enemies.
The Ten-Tails struck Akamaru and Kiba as soon as she emerged from the hole she had fallen into as the Alliance launched its counterattack. Once Kurama had enough chakra, Naruto transferred some of it to Akamaru, who then utilized it along with Kiba to assault the Uchihas and the Ten-Tails, severing their connection to the monster. As they managed to escape the Ten-Tails’ gigantic Tailed Beast Ball, Akamaru’s mood informed the Alliance that Minato had been restored. He had some reservations, but Minato assured him that he believed in him.
Akamaru was shocked when Sasuke came to the battlefield and said he would succeed as Hokage. Hashirama used wood clones to create openings in the current barrier as Akamaru, and the other shinobi rushed on the imprisoned Ten-Tails. As a result, Akamaru, Kiba, and a Kiba clone used the jutsu Mixed Man-Beast Transformation: Three-Headed Wolf to attack the Jubi mini clones with his Whirling Fang strike.
Is Akamaru still alive in Boruto?
Akamaru is, as you might have deduced now, alive in Boruto. He is now a very old and very tired dog, but he is alive and well, save for the usual problems that bother old people. His role in the story is actually minimal and is mostly reduced to several cameo appearances in the series. We first see him when he falls asleep during Kiba’s conversation with Tamaki about biding his time until he becomes Hokage. Akamaru and Akemaru later joined Kiba as he was trying to get a newly-released interactive Kurama-themed doll for his girlfriend; he later followed Kiba and Tamaki on their date to the Quarrel Festival.
We also see a past version of him in the Time Slip Arc, where he met with future Naruto and Sasuke and helped them. He was later seen again when Kiba talked to Naruto and when the former attended the memorial service for the fallen victims of the Fourth Shinobi World War. However, he mostly slept through the ceremony.
