Hell’s Paradise: How Did Yamada Asaemon Kishō Die?
Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, sometimes referred to as simply Hell’s Paradise, is a manga series that was created by Yūji Kaku, who both wrote and illustrated it. The manga was first released on January 22, 2018, and it was freely serialized on the Shōnen Jump+ app and website. Hell’s Paradise is filled with some amazing and memorable characters, and in this article, we have decided to talk about one specific character in the series – Yamada Asaemon Kishō. In this article, you will find out who Yamada Asaemon Kishō is and how he died, as revealed in one of the recent anime series episodes.
Yamada Asaemon Kishō was introduced as the retainer of the powerful criminal Warped Keiun, who died while trying to kill Gabimaru. He rejected the idea of joining Sagiri and Gabimaru, warning her about the criminals on the island and telling her about the importance of this mission for the executioners. He then left and was eventually infected with Arborification and died; Tenza and Nurugai found his body.
The rest of this article will focus on Yamada Asaemon Kishō and his fate in the Hell’s Paradise series. Yamada Asaemon Kishō was a very intriguing character in the Hell’s Paradise lore, and it only makes sense that the fans want to know what happened to this guy, which is why we have decided to compose this article. This article will contain some spoilers from the Hell’s Paradise manga, so be careful how you approach it.
Yamada Asaemon Kishō died from Arborification, but the circumstances are unknown
The story of Yamada Asaemon Kishō starts not long after Gabimaru and Sagiri arrive on the island. When they arrived at their destination, Sagiri was very strict towards Gabimaru, demanding that he keep his hands tied all the time, even though they both knew that he could easily break the rope and that danger might come.
So, when Gabimaru was attacked by another convict, who wanted to eliminate his competition, Gabimaru had to kill him while having his hands tied. When Yamada Asaemon Kishō, his keeper, explained that the situation would continue to be similarly chaotic (which was true), Gabimaru realized that he had to watch out for himself and proceeded to kill Sagiri. However, he stated that he did not want to do it but was forced to.
Before this clash, though, Yamada Asaemon Kishō had a monologue. As we have said, he revealed to Sagiri that the situation on the island was going to continue being chaotic, properly predicting that the criminals would try and turn on their retainers, as well as that there would be bloodshed (this was confirmed by several scenes where the criminals attacked their keepers, as well as each other; in some of the scenes, the criminals would end up dead, while in others, the keepers would end up dead). He warned Sagiri that the criminals had their own agenda and that they could not be trusted.
He also told Sagiri that this mission was also important for the executioners. Namely, the Yamada clan was hierarchical, and the ranks were quite important. Eizen was the Rank 1 and, thus, the designated heir of the clan, but he was killed not long after arriving on the island, which meant, as Kishō himself confirmed, that this mission would also determine the next head of the Yamada clan, which is why it was so important to the executioners themselves. Before leaving, he also suggested that Iwagakure might get involved if this mission fails, as the Shogun wanted the Elixir at all costs, prompting Gabimaru to attack Sagiri.

Kishō did not witness the attack. After Gabimaru killed his criminal, Keiun, he simply left, showing that he was not interested in becoming the next Yamada clan leader and simply wanted to get off the island alive. We don’t actually know how skilled he was or what his true agenda was, but he was certainly intelligent and perceptive, which is why he’d rather get off the island than risk his life. He was obviously not too ambitious, as he did not care for the clan’s leadership.
He was grounded and level-headed, quite relaxed, and never assertive, which was his markedly obvious personality trait. He did not react even when Gabimaru set him straight after some of his comments, nor did he care to intervene in Gabimaru’s fight with Keiun; he did not even try to control Keiun – he simply did not care.
After saying what he wanted to say, he simply made his departure. And that was in line with his personality – he said what he had to, showed that he was quite precise in his assessment of the situation, and left, looking out for himself. He was on his way to the boats to sail home but never reached home. The events we are about to describe are still a mystery, and the author never really revealed any details, so this is, sadly, all we have on Yamada Asaemon Kishō and his fate in the series.
Namely, as they were also looking for a way off the island, Yamada Asaemon Tenza and Nurugai found Yamada Asaemon Kishō’s body. It was covered with flowers and it was quite obvious that he was infected with Arborification. With a strange grin, his body was found near the boats, and Tenza tried to get a response, but there was none. Moments later, Yamada Asaemon Kishō’s body was split in half by the Wadatsumi’s large tentacle. The Wadatsumi are sea creatures that prevent anyone from leaving the island, so they also stop Tenza and Nurugai. As for Yamada Asaemon Kishō, he was confirmed dead at this moment, and it is unknown how he was infected and by what creature. His blade was by his side, suggesting she was fighting someone, but the details were never revealed.
