One Piece: Who Is Ochoku & Is He Still Alive?
One Piece has an amazingly large number of secondary characters that have appeared over the series’ two-decade run. Many have been forgotten because they appeared early in the story, while some have remained secondary characters closely related to the lore’s past. The character who will be the focus of this article is a relatively obscure secondary character from the past, but who has been mentioned in the most recent episode of the One Piece anime. The character in question is Ochoku, a former member of the dreaded Rocks Pirates, and in this article, you will find out everything you need to know about him and his fate in One Piece.
Ochoku was a member of the Rocks Pirates
Fans of the One Piece lore will know that the Rocks Pirates were one of the most dangerous and formidable crews in the history of the lore. The role of the Rocks Pirates is a very complex one, and while the series has yet to reveal more details about them, we know that they were, indeed, a genuine threat and that it took the combined efforts of the Marines and the Roger Pirates to bring them down.
The members of the Rocks Pirates are known, but we don’t have too many details about most of them. Sure, we know the stories of Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaidou (and even Shiki), but what about the others? We know some of these members, but this article will be focused on Ochoku.
Ochoku was a secondary member of the Rocks Pirates, but seeing how he was a member of the crew, he was undoubtedly a powerful pirate. Also, you might know him as Wang Zhi, which is the official English translation of his name and is used in other languages as well, so if you’re confused – now you know that Ochoku and Wang Zhi are the same people. Sadly, we don’t know what Ochoku looks like, since he was not identified in the series, or Oda never specified who he was, even if he did draw him in the manga. Now, let us see what we know about his story.
As for his past and background, we can confirm that we know absolutely nothing, as Oda has not explored this part of his biography (yet). The earliest moment in his life that was revealed was his arrival in Hachinosu (also known as Pirate Island), where he became part of the Rocks Pirates; we also don’t know how old he was at that moment.
Thirty-six years before the beginning of the main story, the Rocks Pirates crew learned that the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, and the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi would be up for grabs at the Native Hunting Competition to be held in God Valley. As soon as he reached the island, Rocks D. Xebec went first and ordered his companions to follow him. The crew then attacked some World Nobles, forcing Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp to ally with Gol D. Roger to defeat them. Rocks lost his life in the battle, so the crew disbanded. Ochoku later took control of Hachinosu, which was the place where his adventure with Rocks started.
And with this, we close his story regarding his career with the Rocks Pirates. From when he took control over Hachinosu until Blackbeard visited him, nothing is known about Ochoku and his story. We don’t know what happened to him, what he did, or why Blackbeard targeted him, so we will skip to what happened during the time skip.
Ochoku’s fate is unknown as of the time of writing
Remember the Rocky Port Incident? We wrote about that One Piece event some time ago and told you what happened. In short, the Rocky Port Incident was an incident that Trafalgar D. Water Law caused during the two-year time skip. It was first mentioned by Brannew when he reintroduced the Seven Warlords of the Sea as a group. We know that Marine Captain Koby protected citizens during the incident and became known as a hero among them and that Blackbeard clashed with Ochoku as part of the incident.
Now, details are still scarce, as we only have a short account and Blackbeard’s version of the story, but Teach did clash with Ochoku then, and the battle was seemingly a horrible and dangerous one. Koby helped save some people, but he also helped Teach – it is not known how exactly Koby helped Teach nor if he did it willingly or intentionally – in a way that enabled the dreaded villain to defeat Ochoku and take control of Hachinosu.
So, what happened to Ochoku later? He was overthrown, but his ultimate fate has not been specified by Oda. Knowing Blackbeard, he would probably have boasted about killing Ochoku, so it is possible that he left the former ruler alive and imprisoned for some reason, but it could also be that Oda simply forgot to confirm explicitly that Ochoku died in that fight. Be that as it may, we’re going to have to wait for an official answer.
