Sukuna is, alongside Kenjaku, the biggest villain in Jujutsu Kaisen and the most dangerous one; we’re certain he is more powerful than Kenjaku. Now, due to his immense importance, Sukuna has, despite being a villain, collected a solid amount of fans. This explains why he is so popular, and in this article, we are going to provide you with an explanation for a phenomenon that has been bugging fans ever since Sukuna first appeared in the series. Namely, we know that the connection between Sukuna and Itadori is strong and there are even theories claiming that they are the same person. Are they? Keep reading to find out!

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Yuji Itadori, the series’ protagonist, and Sukuna, the series’s main antagonist, are connected through the fact that Itadori swallowed many of Sukuna’s fingers and thus acted as a vessel for him until Sukuna took over Megumi.
  • There are some theories that Sukuna and Itadori are related, which we cannot rule out completely, but they are unlikely based on everything we know about the two of them in the series.
  • Other theories claim that Sukuna and Itadori are one and the same, but these theories are by all means false, as there is too much in the canon that outright contradicts them.

There are theories that Sukuna and Itadori are either related or the same person

Jujutsu Kaisen is a very popular series, and very popular series has a lot of fans. Fans, of course, love to voice their opinions on their favorite series, but not just that – they also love to craft theories about their favorite characters. Sukuna and Itadori are among the most popular Jujutsu Kaisen characters, so you can deduce that there are a lot of theories about them. Of course, this becomes even more interesting in light of the fact that Sukuna and Itadori really do have a shared story in the series. Because of that, some fans think that Itadori and Sukuna are one and the same or that they could be related.

For example, Reddit user chowmienching claims the following:

We all know that Itadori Yuji is the only vessel in a thousand years to inhabit Ryoumen Sukuna in his body with total control over his own body. This may seem absurd but what I believe is Yuji IS a descendant of Sukuna. It seems so obvious becauseSukuna’s original form from a thousand years ago has the same physique and hair as Itadori family has due to the common sense of genes passed through generations.

Now about the fact that there is a theory going around that Yuji is a death painting, its most probably false since during the Shibuya Arc Gojo was easily able to identify Choso as a death painting just with a glimpse. This proves that Yuji is NOT a death painting, if he were then Gojo Sensei would be the first to identify him as a death painting.

We hope that Gege Sensei reveals the truth about Yuji’s backstory soon enough. I personally think that Yuji is actually is a descendant of Ryoumen Sukuna. This might come out as false later on in the manga but this was my take on Yuji.

Now, the theories that distinguish between Sukuna and Yuji being the same and simply being related are not that clear, and they are usually one and the same, with one implying the other and vice versa. This is why we could use the above-presented theory as an example. But, while there are some interesting arguments there, we are now going to explain why these theories make little to no sense.

There is no chance that Sukuna and Itadori are the same person

And while some of these theories make sense, they are not really to plausible. Okay, we cannot really rule out that Itadori and Sukuna are related. That is true, but that doesn’t seem to be likely either, although we cannot rule that out as a possibility in the future; still, with him being related to Kenjaku, adding a relation to Sukuna seems like somewhat of an overkill, doesn’t it? But, it’s Gege… so who knows?

But, the theory that Sukuna and Itadori are one and the same is absolutely not true and whatever you might read, this theory doesn’t make sense. First of all, had Itadori not stumbled upon Sukuna’s finger by mere misfortune, he would never have heard of Sukuna; Sukuna wasn’t even “alive” when the story started, and he woke up only when Itadori ingested the first singer. Secondly, Itadori was simply Sukuna’s vessel, and while they do look alike, it has to be stated that Sukuna actually takes on the bodily features of his vessel, which explains why the two of them look so similar. If you remember, when he took over Megumi’s body, he looked like Megumi as well, so there’s that.

And if this isn’t enough for you – we have another one. The two of them exist separately. This became evident when Sukuna saved Yuji’s life; sure, he was dependent on Yuji’s life in the sense that Yuji was his vessel and he needed a vessel, but they were never one and the same, and they existed separately within the same body. But, at one moment, if you remember, Sukuna broke away from Itadori and possessed Megumi’s body, which was the ultimate proof that the two of them were individual entities. Finally, Sukuna is currently back in his original form and is fighting Yuji Itadori, which means that there is absolutely no chance that the two of them are one and the same. Otherwise, they wouldn’t exist, both of them, at the same time.

And that is everything we have to tell you about this topic. We cannot rule out that Sukuna and Itadori are related, although it is unlikely, but we can definitely confirm that they are not one and the same.
