Few political dramas on streaming have built as loyal an audience as ‘The Diplomat’. Created by Debora Cahn, the Netflix series follows Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler, a career diplomat thrown into high-stakes international crises while her marriage to Rufus Sewell’s Hal Wyler keeps getting more complicated.

The fourth season premiered on October 15 and raised the stakes again. President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler hatch a dangerous plan to seize a Russian nuclear weapon, pushing the U.S. toward war, while Kate teams up with First Gentleman Todd Penn to restore stability.

Fans don’t have to wait long for good news. Netflix has officially renewed ‘The Diplomat’ for a 5th season, announcing the decision on October 29, just 2 weeks after the latest season premiered.

This renewal came a bit differently from earlier ones. Season 4 had been greenlit back in May 2025, well before season 3 premiered, but this time the show proved itself on the charts first.

The numbers made the decision easy. Season 4 debuted at No. 5 on Netflix’s English TV chart with 4.8 million views in its first week and reached 10.3 million views by the end of its second week.

Netflix also shared some impressive milestones. The latest season climbed to No. 3 on the Global Top 10 in its second week and entered the Top 10 in 63 countries. Since its debut in April 2023, the series has racked up more than 130 million views and reached the Top 10 in 87 countries. Across all 4 seasons, it has spent 13 weeks in Netflix’s Top 10.

According to Netflix, season 4 also set a record for the show’s social media impressions within 13 days of launch, a sign that the conversation around the series is growing. The cast has only gotten stronger. Allison Janney, who plays President Grace Penn, won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in September, and her character became one of the main forces driving the new season.

Season 4 also promoted Janney, Bradley Whitford and Nana Mensah to series regulars, with Whitford playing Todd Penn. Ato Essandoh and Ali Ahn round out the supporting cast. Cahn has described the season’s central dynamic as revolving around the foursome of Kate, Hal, Grace and Todd, a relationship that leaves plenty of room for more drama in season 5.

The show has also widened its scope. Season 4 filmed across London, Washington, D.C., New York and Lucca, Italy, giving the political thriller a more international feel than ever. That growing scale reflects how much Netflix trusts the series. With Russell anchoring the story and a strong cast around her, it has become one of the platform’s most dependable dramas.

Netflix hasn’t announced a release window yet. Season 4 was filmed in London through the first half of the year, and production on Season 5 is unlikely to begin before 2027. That means a new season could arrive in late 2027, or more likely 2028, which would break the show’s recent pattern of roughly yearly releases.

Fans may need to be patient, but Kate Wyler’s story is clearly far from over. For now, viewers can stream all 4 seasons on Netflix and speculate about where the Wylers’ turbulent marriage, and the world, will go next.
