One Piece is an anime that certainly has its fair share of strong and powerful characters. And while its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, has most often been featured in our One Piece-related comparisons, this one will not focus on Luffy at all. Namely, the protagonists of this comparison will be two villains from the series and two villains from rival pirate crews at that. The first one is Charlotte Katakuri, Big Mom’s most trusted child and one of Luffy’s strongest foes, whereas the other is King, the most powerful member of Kaido’s crew (aside from Kaido himself, of course). In this article, we will compare the two to determine who the stronger character in the series is.

King would most probably be able to defeat Charlotte Katakuri in a fight. The two second-in-commands are both extremely powerful, but King seems to have an advantage because of his raw power (even Kaido was impressed by it) and his powerful Devil Fruit, which would – seemingly – be enough to counter Katakuri and everything the latter would have to offer.

The rest of this article will further elaborate on the above-given answer, as we will compare Charlotte Katakuri and King in more detail. Through several categories, you will see who the stronger of the two is and why our answer is like it is, i.e., why King would ultimately be able to defeat Charlotte Katakuri if they were to fight.

Physical powers

As the most potent of the Three Sweet Commanders, Katakuri is known for having tremendous physical strength and the ability to shoot jelly candies with as much force and speed as possible, making them appear to be bullets and acting as projectiles comparable to a ball. Katakuri can easily murder a man seated atop a massive wedding cake by taking out his candy from far away. Katakuri is a skilled melee combatant. He adopts a fighting style akin to Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi tactics and has Devil Fruit powers that enable him to easily defeat Luffy’s Red Hawk.

King has demonstrated incredible strength by either propelling Shinobu into a tower with enough force to affect and damage it or deflecting a strong kick from Sanji with his own leg when the pirate wore his raid armor. King used his sword to simultaneously cut off one of Marco’s phoenix wings. In addition to his physical power, King is incredibly resilient even in his human form, absorbing a direct hit from Roronoa Zoro’s Rengoku Oni Giri and merely being flung to the ground without suffering any noticeable harm. He appears to be moving quite quickly, considering his size, spanning a wide area in a single bound.

This is the category where King definitely dominates most other characters. King is incredibly powerful, so much that it even impressed Kaido, and would definitely triumph over Katakuri in a duel of strength, which is why he wins this point.

Points: Katakuri 0, King 1

Devil Fruit

Katakuri ate the Mochi Mochi no Mi. The Mochi Mochi no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows Katakuri to produce, control, and morph into Mochi as it pleases him. He uses this ability to create jelly balls and lengthen his legs to trap enemies. He is very creative when using his fruit, as he used the Mochi to create earplugs to protect himself and his siblings from Big Mom’s cry and also used it to block the cannons of the fortress of Bege.

King ate the Ryu Ryu no Mi: Model Pteranodon, a Devil Fruit similar to a Zoan from the Paleozoic Era that grants him the ability to fully or partially turn into a Pteranodon. He can fly thanks to this fruit and use incredibly potent aerial strikes, as he demonstrated when he assaulted the Queen Mother Chanter, a huge ship with enough power to take down even Charlotte Linlin. Also, it gives him the necessary strength in his beak to strike Sanji in the stomach and hurt him. With his beast-human form, he can use his wings to fire strong flying slashes. You may throw these slashes one after the other, and they can cause a ton of damage.

Katakuri has, in our opinion, one of the weirder Devil Fruits among the stronger One Piece characters. On the other hand, King’s Devil Fruit is both powerful and practical, which is why he also wins this point.

Points: Katakuri 0, King 2

Haki

Katakuri may use Observation Haki to his advantage to the point that he can predict the future. With the Armament Haki, Katakuri successfully impregnated Luffy’s leg with Mochi and caused him to bleed. He can also harden his arm like he did when Luffy attacked him. He can also use Royal Haki, as seen by the massive Shard of Royal Haki he released alongside Luffy to take down Charlotte Flampe and her minions. This means that he is among a very small number of characters who can use all three types of Haki.

King is known to be able to use two of the three varieties of Haki. King can employ the Observation Haki, and he claims to have been able to detect Sanji even when he was invisible. He can also employ the Armament Haki, as evidenced by the way he hardens his katana before facing Zoro. Ironically, the Royal Haki is the only Haki King that cannot be used because he lacks the authority of a king.

We have a clear situation in this category – Katakuri knows three types of Haki, whereas King knows only two. This means that Katakuri wins this point with ease.

Points: Katakuri 1, King 2

Weapons

Katakuri uses the Mogura trident in combat. He was first observed using it at Charlotte Pudding and Vinsmoke Sanji’s wedding. When Katakuri enters his Mochi body, the trident seems to be inside when it is unused. When using the Mogura trident, Katakuri is incredibly proficient. He combines it with his Devil Fruit abilities, physical strength, and prowess to unleash devastating blows.

King wears a big katana that is appropriate for his size on his right hip. This sword’s smooth circular gold tsuba, matching gold kashira, and matching gold kojiri contrast with the light orange hilt’s light orange tsuka-ito, which create diamond-shaped recesses. The saya surrounding it is the same shade of orange as the tsuka-ito. Two red cords with protruding ends and extra red bands encircling the bottoms of the saya are attached underneath.

It is quite difficult to directly compare these two in this category, which is why – ultimately – we decided to share the points, as both of them have very powerful weapons and are solidly proficient with them.

Charlotte Katakuri vs. King: Who would win?

The points confirm what we have said in the introduction – Katakuri and King are amazingly strong, and the difference between them is minimal, but King would ultimately triumph over Katakuri. This is due to his enormous physical strength and the power of his Devil Fruit, both of which surpass Katakuri’s powers and abilities. But we have to reiterate that Katakuri would not go down without a fight and that it is an extremely close call, with this probably being one of the – potentially, at least – best battles in the series.
