Does Kawaki Kill Sasuke? Chapter 78 Explained!
The relationship between Kawaki and the protagonists of the Boruto manga is a very interesting one. Kawaki was, namely, raised by Naruto as his own son, and he developed a brotherly bond with Boruto; Kawaki will later unite with Boruto to solve the mystery of the Kāma, since both of them are vessels of that seal. Yet, in Chapter 66 of the Boruto manga, Kawaki fought with Boruto and punched a hole through his chest, leaving him – as it seems – for dead. Boruto survived, but that realization enraged Kawaki so much that in Chapter 77, he vowed to kill Boruto because he was Momoshiki’s vessel. Naruto and Hinata said they would stop him, but Kawaki locked them inside a strange dimension and went for Boruto again, but this time, Sasuke intervened and went on to fight Kawaki. In this article, we will explain whether Sasuke is going to be killed by Kawaki.
At this moment, it is still unknown whether Kawaki will kill Sasuke. As far as things stand, the two are bound to fight soon, and we know that it all ends with Boruto, wearing Sasuke’s headband and wielding Sasuke’s katana, fighting against Kawaki. Whether that means that Kawaki will kill Sasuke or seal him away as he did with Naruto and Hinata remains unknown.
The rest of this article will give you additional details on what happened in Chapter 78 of the Boruto manga, especially in relation to what we can expect from Kawaki’s potential fight with Sasuke. We now know what happened in the prelude, so we can confirm that we will tell you more details about the events that led to their sudden disappearance.
Will Kawaki kill Sasuke in Boruto?
Although not directly, Boruto‘s Chapters 77 & 78 continue the shocking events from Chapter 66 of Boruto, in which Kawaki seemingly killed Boruto because Momoshiki was living inside of him. It was not clear then, but in Chapters 77 and 78, it was revealed why Kawaki did what he did and why the realization that Boruto survived actually depressed him so much. In Chapter 77, Kawaki outrightly clashed with Boruto, but he was actually provoking Momoshiki to come out. Since that never happened, he left but would return later.
After telling the guards to let him go because he wants to talk to Naruto, Kawaki enters Uzumaki’s residence and surprises both Naruto and Hinata. He tells Naruto they need to talk seriously, and the Seventh Hokage agrees to talk to him. What happened next was a truly shocking turn of events and was actually an explanation of Kawaki’s behavior. However, everything started quite normally, with Kawaki confessing to Naruto that he loves, respects, and will do anything in his power to protect him.
Naruto is concerned about Kawaki’s state of mind and questions where those words come from. Kawaki answers that his resolve is made and that he will do anything to protect his true father figure. The boy then adds that Naruto is too good for their world, so he will be the first to die. It doesn’t help that he is also a shinobi who lives by a code and will most likely sacrifice himself for others and won’t survive against the Ōtsutsuki.
Naruto is, understandably, overwhelmed by Kawaki’s words, but the boy keeps talking and reveals his true plan – he will hunt every single member of Ōtsutsuki and kill them with their own powers. Hinata and Naruto notice the word “every,” which suggests that Kawaki also intends to kill their son Boruto to prevent Momoshiki from taking over his body. Hinata slaps Kawaki, but Kawaki repeats what he decided – he will complete his goal and protect Naruto, even if it means his family will hate him for the rest of their lives.

Naruto vows that he will have to go through him to kill his son, which prompts Kawaki to activate the Daikokuten and send Naruto and Hinata to another dimension. Although it was a shock, Kawaki revealed that he simply wanted to protect them without hurting them physically. These events are continued, of course, in Chapter 78, which is titled “Super Idiot.” After Naruto and Hinata disappear, an investigation is made, and it is discovered that Kawaki had something to do with it, and not Code, as it was initially thought.
Meanwhile, Kawaki decides to proceed with his plan to kill Boruto because of Momoshiki, and the two once again engage in a fight. While they are fighting, Kawaki slices Boruto’s right eye, causing an injury similar to the one sustained by Kakashi earlier in the story. As he is about to kill Boruto, Sarada intervenes and jumps between the two, wanting to protect Boruto. Being on a mission, Kawaki tells her to move or he will have to kill her, but Mitsuki and Shikamaru arrive to help, and they manage to immobilize Kawaki for a moment. In the next scene, Sasuke arrives (his epic return after several chapters of being absent) and puts his katana next to Kawaki’s neck, telling him not to move.
Sasuke tries to reason with Kawaki but is unable to do so. After that, Momoshiki manifests through Boruto, and Kawaki receives some unexpected help from the very guy he wants to kill. Kawaki can get out of this situation, and Momoshiki tells Boruto that the end has begun and that he can do nothing to stop it. What most fans expect to happen now is a fight between Sasuke and Kawaki, a fight that Kawaki will win. Seeing how this probably leads us to the opening scene of the series, in which we saw Boruto fight Kawaki.
In that scene, Boruto is seen with Sasuke’s katana and headband, implying that Sasuke lost to Kawaki. Now, whether that means that Sasuke is dead is unknown at this moment, as Kawaki might have just sealed him away as he did with Naruto and Hinata, and we sincerely hope that Sasuke will not end up dying in this fight, but we’ll just have to wait out and see what happens.
