Frieren: Who Is Sein & Will He Find His Friend?

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss another character whose role is that of a secondary character but he is such an important character that he definitely deserves an article. The character in question is Sein, and in this article, you are about to find out everything you need to know about the newest member of Frieren’s party!
Sein is, by his own admission, a “dirty adult” who wanted to become an adventurer
We first meet Sein in the story when he tells Frieren about his life in a funny scene. Namely, it turns out that he is trapped in a bottomless swamp (something akin to quicksand) while Frieren is simply sitting on the ground and listening to him, not wanting to help him. She feigned that she could not remember the spell to save him, but when Fern arrived, it turned out that she was just doing it for the fun of it and immediately saved Sein afterward. They then left, but after a poisonous snake bit Stark, they had to return to the village, where they found out that Sein was the younger brother of the local priest.
Sein and his brothers were orphaned early on, so Sein was raised by his brother. He had a close childhood friend, Gorilla, with whom he was very close. The two of them wanted to become adventurers, but when Sein found out that his brother rejected an offer from Heiter to go to the capital so he could stay in his hometown, he rejected Gorilla’s offer because he wanted to repay his brother for staying. And this was a major moment in Sein’s story.
Why did Sein join Frieren’s party?
As soon as Frieren found out about his dream and story, she intended to get him to become an adventurer. She remembered how she was similar when Himmel first approached her to join his party, but Himmel managed to persuade her and she was ultimately able to live the best years of her life with her friends and allies. Sein was in a relatively similar situation, and Frieren understood that which is why she was persistent.
After telling his brother why he stayed in the first place, Sein received a slap from him, as the priest was angry then. He said that he never regretted his decision to stay but that he could see that Sein did and that he never wanted him to stay because of him. The two then had an off-screen heart-to-heart, and Sein told Frieren that he would join them, at least for a part of their journey. Namely, his goal is to find Gorilla, his friend, and that is why he decided to join Frieren’s party.
Will Sein leave Frieren’s party?
Sein traveled with Frieren, Fern, and Stark for a while. In-universe, this part of the story is known as the Journey with Sein Arc. And while he definitely did bond with his three companions, you have to consider the fact that he always had only one goal in mind – find Gorilla. Sure, he wanted to become an adventurer, but he left his village to find his friend, and Frieren’s party knew that he would not follow them to Heaven.
It ultimately comes down to the fact that Sein simply had a different goal than Frieren’s party. Frieren wanted to reach Heaven, far up in Ende, so she could see Himmel again, as she believed it was possible, based on what she had been told. On the other hand, Sein wants to lose all his regrets and find his friend. This made absolute sense from his perspective, and the readers were prepared for that.
So yes, Sein decided to part ways with Frieren, Fern, and Stark when winter was over. They parted ways in a friendly fashion, and we will probably see Sein at least once more in the story, so we don’t think that his story is over. But the Journey with Sein Arc ended with this moment.
How skilled is Sein?
Regarding skills and abilities, Sein initially seemed useless, as he ended up in a bottomless swamp and had to be saved by Frieren. But, as soon as Stark needed healing – he showed some amazing skills in that aspect. Namely, Stark was bitten by a poisonous snake, and while Frieren and Fern took him to the village (Frieren wasn’t that skilled with healing spells), the local priest (Sein’s brother) told them that it was too late and that he couldn’t do anything about it.
Sein then appeared and healed Stark in an instant. Frieren was amazed that he could do such a great job with a poison that his brother, a skilled healer, and priest (priests specializing in healing magic), told was incurable. We then found out that Sein is actually a mage, and from that, it seems he is very skilled, although his abilities seem limited to healing spells.
Although he is officially classified as a Priest class character, Frieren labeled him as being of “her own kind,” which suggests that she perceives him as a Mage and that his powers and abilities are more akin to those of a mage than a priest. On top of that, as a priest, he has exceptional curse resistance, as he could resist the Confusion Flower’s sleeping curse completely. In contrast, Frieren and her friends immediately fell asleep.
Is Sein more skilled than his brother?
The final question here is whether Sein is more skilled than his unnamed priest brother. Based on Heiter’s evaluation and the medallion he has, his brother seems to be a very skilled priest, but when Stark came in – he could do nothing. On the other hand, Sein did it with ease.
We assume that Sein has some fields in which he excels, but we don’t think that he is actually so much better than his brother; we simply haven’t seen his brother demonstrate his skills that much, so we don’t know much, but we assume that – generally – they are more or less on the same level, with Sein surpassing his brother in certain fields.
