Minecraft: Here’s How To Add Servers While Playing on Xbox

Let’s face it, Minecraft is the most fun to play with friends. You get to fool around with them, do silly things, build amazing things you can then show off, and so much more. It would be an incredible shame if you couldn’t join a friend’s server just because you’re playing on a certain device, specifically Xbox. So, can you add servers while playing Minecraft on Xbox?

  • If you have a legacy edition Minecraft the process for adding servers is a bit different, but overall, you can add them in both instances.

The ‘Add Server’ button

You’re after the ‘Add Server’ button when playing the game. Newer versions of the game will have you scroll through a plethora of random and the most popular Bedrock Edition servers before you get the chance to add your own server, so let’s see where you will head on to do just that:

  1. Open Minecraft on your Xbox console and press play
  2. You’ll be presented with three tabs. Navigate to the Servers tab.
  3. Once you’re there, if you’re playing on a newer Xbox and a newer version of Minecraft that’s still receiving updates, you’ll have to scroll through the random servers that you can join as it is until you reach the ‘Add Server’ button.
  4. Your server host should have provided you with three things: server name, server address, and port.
  5. You can immediately begin playing on the server by pressing ‘Play’ and pressing ‘Save’ to save the server for future use.

Finding the server address

If you or your server host are having trouble finding the server address, it will be much easier if you know that your server address is the same as your Xbox, computer, or other console IP address. This means that the person running the server will have to go through the steps to deliver the server address. Let’s see how you can find it on three major devices and consoles, which are Xbox, PS4, and PC.

Finding the server address on the PC

To find the server address on a PC running Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your computer and press the Windows + R keys.
  2. A dialog box will appear in which you should then type in ‘cmd’ and hit enter.
  3. This will open the command prompt. You’ll want to input this command into it next: ipconfig /all
  4. Once you hit enter, look for the ‘Default Gateway.’ The numbers next to it will be your IP address and, consequently, your server address.

Finding the server address on PS4

To find the server address on your PS4, follow these steps:

  1. Press the PlayStation button on your controller to open the dashboard.
  2. Head on over to ‘Settings’ next.
  3. Once you’re in the settings window, go to ‘Network’ and then ‘View Connection Status’
  4. The IP address will be shown in the IP address section under ‘Default Gateway’

Finding the server address on Xbox

To find the server address on your Xbox, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on your Xbox and go to the dashboard.
  2. Once you’re there, head on over to ‘Settings’ and then ‘All Settings’
  3. Then, you will go to Network -> Network Settings -> Advanced Settings
  4. Then, choose ‘IP Settings’, and you will find it under the IPv4 section.

‘Can’t Connect To Server’ error

You might not be able to connect to a server for several reasons, but first, you have to figure out whether the server you’re trying to connect to is the problem or the problem is you. To figure this out, head on over to your servers sections, and if you aren’t able to join any server, you are the problem; if you only can’t join that one specific server, the problem is with the server.

Your internet connection might be unstable if you’re the problem, or you might not have an Xbox Live account. Remember, you can’t play online if you do not have this subscription.

Another reason you might not be able to connect to the server is if you’re playing on an Xbox 360 and you’re not friends with the people you want to play with, so make sure you’re friends with all of them.

The Xbox 360 problem

Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition is also part of the legacy editions of Minecraft released for PS4. The problem with these versions of Minecraft nowadays is that they don’t receive any more updates. The Xbox 360 Edition stopped receiving updates from Update Aquatic.

Why is this a problem? Well, for starters, you can’t join servers if your versions are not in sync, but an even bigger problem is that the Xbox 360 Edition is not Bedrock, so you can’t play with other console users who aren’t playing the legacy edition on Xbox 360.

Playing with Java Edition friends

Java Edition users have the same problem as Xbox 360 Edition users and can’t play together on a server made for Bedrock Edition. To keep it short, cross-platform play with Java Edition users is not allowed. You can certainly play on a Bedrock Edition server from a PC, but only if you have Windows 10 Edition.

The main reason is that Java and Bedrock Edition are not the same. Bedrock was coded in C++, while Java Edition was coded in Java. The only saving grace for Java Edition users is that the game is still receiving regular updates and the fact that you can mod it to oblivion. Why is this important? It’s due to Geyser MC, so what is it?

Geyser MC

Geyser MC works as a packet translator that allows Bedrock Edition users to join Java Edition servers, which is impossible in any other instance. Geyser MC is free to download and use, but only Java Edition users can use it. This means you should run a Java Edition server to make it work.
