James Gunn is one of the busiest figures in the superhero world right now. As co-CEO of DC Studios, he’s working to create a new cinematic universe from the ground up, with numerous projects in development and production.

The DCU officially begins on December 5, 2024, with the premiere of Creature Commandos on Max. The show will feature Rick Flag Sr., voiced by Frank Grillo, who will also portray the character in live-action later on. Grillo has already been spotted on the sets of Superman and Peacemaker Season 2.

James Gunn recently explained the timeline for the three projects. Creature Commandos is the first in the timeline, followed by Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. However, fans noticed that Rick Flag Sr., voiced by Frank Grillo, has white hair in Creature Commandos and black hair in Superman, which is confusing since Superman takes place after Creature Commandos.

Gunn addressed this inconsistency in a recent interview with Collider, explaining why Rick’s appearance doesn’t match up between the animated show and the movie.

GUNN: Because that motherfucker Frank Grillo was shooting Tulsa King when we were shooting Peacemaker. We were going to originally do the white, he was going to dye it white, and then I saw somebody the other day say, “Well, what about temporary hair dye? Haven’t you ever heard of temporary hair dye?”

And I’m like, “It looks like shit. Yes, I’ve heard of that, and it looks like absolute shit when you’re putting fake gray on somebody’s very dark black hair.”

It turns out the issue with Rick Flag Sr.’s hair comes from Frank Grillo working on two projects at the same time, which can cause these kinds of inconsistencies. A similar situation happened with Henry Cavill during his time as Superman in the DCEU.

Cavill’s mustache became famous during the production of Justice League (2017). Here’s what happened: Cavill had grown a mustache for his role in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which was filming at the same time as Justice League reshoots. However, due to contract rules, Cavill wasn’t allowed to shave it off for the reshoots, leading to a strange situation.

To deal with the mustache, digital effects were used to “remove” it in post-production, leading to some awkward and often talked-about CGI. Fans weren’t happy with the results, especially since the effects were so noticeable, with Cavill’s upper lip often looking strangely smooth.
