Martial arts and fighting are an essential element of a lot of anime series. Some of them are lesser-known, while others are among the most important works in the genre. The latter group includes both Naruto and Dragon Ball, two of the most popular anime series in history; both of them are members of the “Big Four”. Now, in this article, we are going to compare two characters from them – Son Goku, the protagonist of Dragon Ball, and Madara Uchiha, one of Naruto‘s most powerful villains – in order to tell you which character is stronger.
Madara Uchiha might be strong, but he stands no chance against Son Goku. Madara was defeated within the borders of his own universe and is not its strongest character. On the other hand, Goku is one of the strongest characters in his own universe, and while Madara could keep up to a certain point, he would ultimately lose to Goku.
The rest of the article is going to be all about comparing the two selected characters from Dragon Ball and Naruto. You’re going to find out who Son Goku and Madara Uchiha are, as well as what their exact powers and abilities are. In the end, based on what we have presented earlier, we’re going to give our final verdict on who is stronger.
Madara Uchiha and his powers
Madara Uchiha is a fictional character from Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto manga and anime series. He was the head of the Uchiha clan and, together with Hashirama Senju, one of the founders of the Hidden Leaf Village. He is considered to be one of the strongest ninja ever and the first to attain the Eternal Hypnotic Sharingan and the Rinnegan after the Hermit of the Six Paths.
For most of the second half of the story, Tobi pretended to be Madara but during the Fourth Ninja War, it is discovered that he is actually the believed dead Obito Uchiha, who pretended to be Madara at the behest of the latter. He is the main antagonist in the second part of the manga.
Madara Uchiha is considered to be one of the most powerful ninja in history: his fame is such as to be feared even in distant lands and is comparable to that of Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage, the only one who could rival him. Equipped with exceptional skills in every aspect of combat, a considerable amount of chakra (which is very strong), and a particularly powerful art of fire, he was, together with his brother Izuna, the first to awaken the Hypnotic Sharingan and to discover its secrets.
Through the masterful use of this innate ability of his clan, he managed to easily subjugate the Nine-Tailed Fox, which in fact he used against Hashirama. Susano’o was shown to be the only technique of his Hypnotic Sharingan, but he has used it with impressive versatility and power.
He was the first ninja to awaken the Eternal Hypnotic Sharingan, after obtaining his brother’s eyes in order to obviate the imminent blindness due to the use of the Hypnotic Sharingan, and subsequently the Rinnegan: he obtained this last ability after the clash with Hashirama as, on this occasion, he managed to obtain and subsequently implant his cells, thanks to which he also came into possession of the Art of Wood and exceptional medical skills.
The peculiar technique of Madara’s Rinnegan, in addition to Chibaku Tensei, is Hengoku, through which he can manifest shadows of himself in the invisible world known as Limbo.
After the defeat of Obito by the alliance, he manages to take possession of the hermit chakra of his eternal rival and later obtain powers similar to those of the Hermit of the Six Paths: in this state, he has revealed himself immune to any magical art, so much so that only hermit arts and martial arts of the highest caliber such as Gai’s have been able to harm him, and he has gained a new skill, superior even to the Art of Dust, which comes in the form of nine black spheres and a staff that he can shape to his pleasure both to attack and to defend himself.
He has also shown that he can undo the regenerating effect of the Resurrection Technique by combining the Art of Darkness and the Art of Light, and that he possesses a powerful healing factor. In battle, he uses a large fan, called Gunbai, which proves capable of absorbing enemy techniques and returning them to the sender.
Son Goku and his powers
Son Goku is the main protagonist of the manga Dragon Ball, and their animated adaptations, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z / Dragon Ball Kai, then Dragon Ball Super, as well as the alternative animated sequel to the first two series, Dragon Ball GT. An orphan exiled from the defunct planet Vegeta, he lands on Earth where he grows up with his adoptive grandfather. His adventure begins the day he meets Bulma, a young adventurer, who invites him to look for the Dragon Balls.
He is an expert in martial arts, having been taught the style of the Turtle School; he is known to be close to a prodigy, managing to learn techniques and levels of strength that other individuals would take time to learn. He even knew how to use skills such as reading minds without even knowing how to do it. Goku has been shown to use different parts of his body to help him in combat, such as shooting a Kamehameha with his feet, using his eyes to launch a ki laser beam in the Frieza Saga among other examples.
Son Goku is a born martial arts expert and fan, managing to read his opponents’ movements and get used to his attacks and speed. Usually, in combat, Goku reserves large amounts of strength and restrains himself to the point of apparently lowering his ki level to absurdly low points in order to conserve energy, however, he also demonstrated the ability to unleash his full power just in the nick of time, when he launched a physical attack.
As a Saiyan, Goku is able to use the Saiyan Power, which allows him to surpass his strength whenever he takes large amounts of damage or fatal wounds. Goku being an alien also has enhanced senses of smell, taste, and sight, which further enhances his combat senses. Goku’s body is much more durable than normal human beings, being essentially invulnerable to all Earth-made weapons.
However, while he is naturally durable thanks to his Saiyan physiology, he has limits, as other powerful beings like himself can hurt, and potentially kill, him if he doesn’t defend himself properly. Also compared to most humans, including those trained in the ki arts, Son Goku possesses a great deal of strength, speed, and stamina.
For example, when he was a young child, he could lift a car over his head and throw it with ease, and during his training with Kame-Sennin, Goku could push massive rock formations that would at least weigh over 100 tons. At the height of his strength, he displayed the ability to destroy mountains, islands, and even heavily damage entire planets with physical force alone.
For speed, he displayed supersonic speeds even faster than light when he reached the Saiyan Saga. By the time he became a Super Saiyan God, his speed had reached speeds massive than the speed of light, and his physical strength was enough for one of the shockwaves from his punches to be felt throughout the universe, damaging incalculably and destroying many planets and stars, up to this point, just four hits between Beerus and Goku are enough to completely destroy the universe.
Goku usually uses techniques based on ki, using them in a fight as support, defense, and attack such as the Kamehameha, these are performed through the control and mastery of ki, born from the creativity and skill of the character. Son Goku is one of the strongest characters in the series, rivaling Vegeta for the position of the most powerful Z Warrior and Universe 7 warrior.
Madara Uchiha vs. Son Goku: Who would win?
And now for the most important and interesting section of our article – the analysis. Here, we are going to use what we have found out about these two characters and analyze how all these facts would (or would not) help them in a fight against each other. Let us continue.
The basic outline of Naruto characters is very similar to that of the Dragon Ball characters. In that aspect, Madara Uchiha, as a martial-arts-based shinobi is similar to Goku in that aspect, as both are excellent martial artists. But, the intensity is quite different. Namely, the fights in Naruto are nowhere as intense and difficult as those from Dragon Ball, which is why this is only a superficial similarity, as Dragon Ball easily dominates Naruto in terms of skills and difficulty.
Having said that, it was quite simple to determine the winner here. As we have said, Goku and Madara do rely on the same basic powers and abilities, but they are not really comparable. Sure, Madara is skilled and he has defeated some very skilled opponents, but he has never fought the likes of Frieza, Vegeta, Jiren, Buu, or Beerus. Madara would easily succumb to all of these, whereas Goku has defeated all except Beerus, but that also seems like an inevitable point in the story.
On top of that, the additional techniques that both of these characters use are also not that comparable. Namely, Madara’s strongest technique is the Susano’o. And while there is no denying that Susano’o is extremely powerful, Goku could easily outmatch the projection without much trouble. On the other hand, Madara doesn’t have the skills nor the arsenal to actually counter Goku’s techniques, let alone his amazing transformations.
This is why Goku is the clear winner here, but we cannot actually blame it on Madara. The worlds of Naruto and Dragon Ball are so different, that Goku is actually more powerful than most other characters, simply because the challenges of his universe are tougher than those of other universes. This is why Madara losing this one doesn’t mean he’s weak – since he is not – it just means that Goku is that much stronger than most.
