One Piece is an anime that certainly has its fair share of strong and powerful characters. And while its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is certainly among them, some characters might be even more powerful than the cheerful and quirky protagonist of the manga. In this article, we will analyze one such potential character, as we will pit Luffy against Monkey D. Dragon, his own father, and one of the more intriguing and interesting characters in the whole series, who is also – in a way – one of the series’ biggest enigmas.

And while Monkey D. Dragon is still an enigma, Luffy would probably be able to defeat him. Now, Monkey D. Dragon’s powers aren’t really known and it is speculated that he is enormously powerful. Still, with Luffy having activated Gear 5 and his Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika’s powers, he could probably overpower his father and defeat him in a direct clash.

Now that you have the short version of the answer, the rest of the article will be divided into three sections, with the first two introducing the characters, their powers, and their abilities (this is because we won’t really know much about Dragon’s powers). In the end, we will give our final verdict and explain why Luffy would be able to defeat his father, Monkey D. Dragon, in a fight.

Monkey D. Luffy and his powers

Monkey D. Luffy is the main protagonist of the anime and manga One Piece, created by Eiichirō Oda. His body is made of rubber after eating a devil fruit, specifically the “Gomu Gomu fruit” He is the captain of the pirate crew known as the Straw Hat Pirates, founded by himself to fulfill his dream of finding the One Piece. He is originally from East Blue.

Luffy has shown to have incredible superhuman strength and a good capacity for fights. At first glance, his thin appearance makes him seem to show weakness, which the latter is usually deceptive in the enemy’s eyes.

Throughout the series, Luffy has shown a force far superior to humans, even defeating a sea king with one punch. This is due to the intense training that his grandfather Monkey D. Garp subjected him, which consisted of throwing him away in the middle of dangerous jungles and tying him to some balloons to raise him to great heights, making him one of the most powerful characters in the series.

Luffy, despite not being very smart or strategic, has shown to have an inverse effect when facing users of Logia-type Devil Fruits, for example his fight against Crocodile, and the idea of using water to hit him (since his devil fruit, the Suna Suna cannot control the sand and manipulate it), Luffy could not hit him because Crocodile was made of sand and Luffy discovered that wetting his fists with water could hit him, even using his own blood to defeat him.

In Skipiea, Luffy was able to counter Enel’s Mantra (Mantra is the way of saying Haki for the inhabitants of Skipiea); Luffy discovered that blanking his mind, meaning acting like an idiot, could counter Enel’s Mantra / Haki, so that Enel could not read his movements. When Luffy was a child, he unknowingly ate a devil fruit belonging to Shanks’ crew. The fruit was the Gomu Gomu no mi that gave him elasticity powers.

Luffy possesses the elastic properties of gum, but as a side effect, he cannot swim since the water cancels his energy, paralyzing his body. In fights, Luffy takes advantage of his elastic properties to stretch one or more of his limbs and make them return by throwing them toward his opponents. This, combined with his outsized strength, makes Luffy a highly powerful character.

Luffy can reach places that no one could reach just by stretching his body parts (his arms, legs, or neck). He can even inflate himself to be able to block enemy attacks (like cannonballs), Luffy is totally Immune to bullets, and these usually bounce off Luffy’s body and return to the shooter or fly elsewhere.

Thanks to his great rubber resistance, he is also totally immune to physical blows. However, throughout the series, the latter is contradicted many times, when some crew member (more specifically Nami) hits Luffy for his irresponsibility, and Luffy ends up with his face bruised and swollen. The fans believe that this is a “mistake” since it must be taken into account that Luffy is made of rubber, and the blows should not affect him.

If something can affect him, it is the cuts of swords or knives since Luffy’s body is totally flexible, which makes him very vulnerable to cuts. After the Lobby battle, Luffy developed a technique to eat while sleeping as after a great battle, he ended up knocked out for several days, and according to Sanji: “He hates missing meals.” This technique allows him to eat as if he were awake.

However, this “technique” itself does not seem like a technique in reality, as Luffy seemed to be in a sleepwalking state, so that may be more of an act of sleepwalking than a technique itself.

Monkey D. Dragon and his powers

Monkey D. Dragon, known as the World’s Worst Criminal, is the supreme commander of the Revolutionary Army and the most wanted and dangerous criminal in the world. He is the father of Monkey D. Luffy and the World Government’s greatest threat. Although a complex character, he has still shown that he cares for his son but also his own revolutionary ideals.

Monkey D. Dragon is the leader of the Revolutionary Army and has complete command of the organization. It has been hinted that Dragon could be an incredibly powerful person; the world government dubbed him “the most wanted man in the world” and is terrified that he could rebel against them with Whitebeard, who has himself become a powerful threat.

He is also the son of the legendary Marine Garp and the father of Luffy, a notorious pirate. The proof of his great power is that he trained Sabo, the second in command of the revolutionaries, who was already a strong fighter in his childhood. With his acquired training years later, Sabo could be on the same level as Fujitora, Admiral of Naval Headquarters.

When Sengoku told everyone about his relationship with Luffy, most people were stunned, including Gecko Moria, then a member of the Seven Warlords, and members of the Whitebeard Pirates, very powerful people under the command of Whitebeard, the most powerful pirate. This reputation was enough to mark Luffy as a potential threat in the future.

He has powerful subordinates such as his commander Emporio Ivankov and Inazuma, who are relatively lower in rank, as well as his second-in-command Sabo, who is much stronger than the rest of the crew, mainly due to having consumed the Mera Mera no Mi, Portgas D. Ace’s former Devil Fruit, which greatly increased its power and brought the power of its user to a level similar to that of an emperor.

Ivankov comments on Luffy’s will to live and be free and that this only proves the idea that he is, in fact, Dragon’s son, implying that Dragon has a similar will. When Dragon arrived in Goa, people noticed that it was windier that day, such as when it did not snow for a full day on Drum Island due to the presence of Portgas D. Ace. It is also worth noting that a storm appears or is already there every time (except for the headquarters of the revolutionary army) when Dragon is present.

Monkey D. Luffy vs. Monkey D. Dragon: Who wins?

And now for our article’s most important and interesting section – the analysis. Here, we will use what we have learned about these two characters and analyze how all these facts would (or would not) help them in a fight against each other. Let us continue.

Comparing anyone with Monkey D. Dragon is not an easy task, mainly because we don’t know much about Monkey D. Dragon and his powers and abilities. Sure, some of them have been shown or implied, and we know that he is a powerful character feared worldwide, but we don’t have any details for you. He is certainly more powerful than he lets on, but how much? We cannot even begin to assume at this point. This is why our conclusion is based solely on our knowledge of Luffy’s powers, and based on that, and we think that Luffy would win.

Namely, the Straw Hat has reached new heights after activating Gear 5 and his Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and we think that would be enough to defeat Monkey D. Dragon. Luffy was able to play around with Kaido in this form, and knowing how powerful Kaido is, we think that it is a good point of reference to conclude that Monkey D. Luffy would ultimately win this fight if it came down to that.
