The infamous Luffy has flaunted a range of amazing forms over the years, with each form becoming progressively more powerful than the last. One Piece fans have been anticipating the arrival of Luffy’s Gear 5 form for quite some time, and it seems that One Piece Film: Red‘s release has finally given anime lovers a taste of what Gear 5 has in store!
Luffy uses Gear 5 in One Piece Film: Red, but only for a brief “debut” moment while performing a double attack alongside Shanks. The majority of Luffy’s abilities in Gear 5 have not been shown on screen as of yet, and fans are eager to find out what Gear 5 has in store for future One Piece anime episodes.
Although we haven’t gotten to see much of Luffy in Gear 5 in the movie, fans were still extremely excited to see it up close – but, the fact that this form was introduced in the movie rather than in the anime has brought tons of speculation among fans. Stick around to find out everything there is to know about Luffy using Gear 5 in One Piece Film: Red, including an overview of Gear 5, why he uses it in the movie instead of the anime series, as well as snippets of some incredible reactions from fans finally seeing Luffy in Gear 5!
Luffy in Gear 5 (Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika)
Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation occurs after awakening from the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit in One Piece that grants Luffy some incredible powers. Luffy is known as the Warrior of Liberation in this form and flaunts increased strength, durability, and freedom, in addition to the abilities gained from his previous Gears 3 and 4.
This form made its first appearance in the One Piece manga series, during Luffy’s battle against the infamous Kaido. Luffy’s Devil Fruit awakens at the perfect moment as it seems he has been annihilated by Kaido, after which he begins charging at Kaido on the Skull Dome rooftop – topped with heartbeats that seem to follow the drums of liberation.
His Gear 5 Sun God state is incredibly unique and vastly different from Luffy’s typical character, with pale hair the color of sunlight as well as a pair of bright glowing eyes. When in Gear 5, Luffy has the appearance of a cartoon (to other characters in the series) and has some insane abilities – such as plucking lightning bolts from the skies and increasing his size to match skyscrapers.
Does Luffy Use Gear 5 in One Piece Film: Red?
One Piece Film: Red has been dominating Japanese box offices ever since its release, and the hype is bubblier than ever with the movie finally hitting screens in the West. Quite a lot of the movie’s success has been attributed to the stunning animations and music tracks featured throughout the film – in addition to a fresh take on the mysterious characters Uta and Shanks, as well as the reveal of Uta as the final boss!
However, a massive detail that fans have been anticipating is the arrival of Luffy’s infamous Gear 5 form – although most fans expected this to be more of a One Piece “Easter Egg”. Luffy was seen in Gear 5 for a very brief moment in the movie trailer, giving many fans all the proof they needed to expect a formal introduction.
Much to many One Piece fans’ surprise, Luffy’s Gear 5 form did make a rather short but still extremely effective appearance in the movie. Luffy did not state that this was indeed his Gear 5 form outright, nor did he maintain this state for a prolonged timeframe (he actually uses Gear 4 for the majority of the movie), but it’s pretty clear that this was Gear 5 based on the information fans have been given till now.
Without handing out too many One Piece Film: Red spoilers regarding the use of Luffy’s Gear 5 form in the movie, Luffy used Gear 5 in a battle alongside Shanks – as they performed a double attack. Fans only really know that this is in fact Gear 5 based on the visual cues and appearance, and this would be the very first time that Luffy’s Gear 5 form has made an appearance on-screen.
Fans’ Reactions to Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece Film: Red
Fans enjoying the movie in theaters were stunned to finally see this legendary form up and close – topped with all the heated fury that would accompany the newfound Sun God! One Piece fans were absolutely losing their minds at the sight of Luffy in Gear 5, as seen below thanks to Owen Murphy and Pikachu – and for good reason, the sight of Luffy just casually flaunting Gear 5 is insane!
It’s definitely heartwarming (and undeniably comedic) to see how this debut impacted those who had been waiting to catch a glimpse of Luffy in Gear 5 for so long. However, it can’t go without being mentioned – not all fans were happy about Luffy’s Gear 5 making a debut in the movie rather than the iconic One Piece anime series.
Why Oda Introduced Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece Film: Red
It was shocking to see how many revelations took center stage throughout the movie, with many wild One Piece theories and burning questions from fans finally getting some answers – to a degree. Many One Piece lovers have been curious to know why this was the case, as many expected these reveals to be featured somewhere in the anime rather than in a One Piece feature movie.
However, Oda did shed some light on this aspect before One Piece Film: Red‘s final release. With the One Piece franchise being so successful and vast, covering numerous forms, Oda stated that he wanted to make the movie stand out, giving fans a special motive to watch the movie as opposed to skipping it in favor of the anime series.
Although many fans were disappointed at Luffy’s Gear 5 making a debut in the movie, it really was just that – a debut. It was only for a few frames, and there is still so much that fans have to learn and see considering everything that’s been detailed in the One Piece manga. Granted that Luffy’s Gear 5 form has some incredibly outrageous yet undeniably powerful abilities, there’s no telling what fans can anticipate in future One Piece installations.
With all that being said, Luffy using Gear 5 in One Piece Film: Red has also brought some interesting questions considering the other information shared throughout the movie – many of which revolve around Shanks.
