Jujutsu Kaisen: Is Toji Tsumiki’s Father? Relationship Explained!
Tsumiki Fushiguro was Megumi’s “sister”; she was first mentioned at the start of the Jujutsu Kaisen series, which means that she is not a completely new character, as she was seen in a flashback early on in the series, but the ending of the Gojo’s Past Arc finally provided us with some information about her, and we can now finally discuss her and her story more. Now, we have already written some articles about Tsumiki and her story, but in this article, we are going to tell you about the relationship between her and her “father,” Toji Fushiguro, as you are going to find out just how the two of them were related and what kind of relationship they had.
Toji Fushiguro is not Tsumiki’s father; he is actually her stepfather, although this did not last long. Tsumiki was actually the daughter of the unnamed woman who became Toji’s second wife after Megumi’s mother died; no information about her mother was revealed, save for that she disappeared around the same time as Toji, who Gojo killed. So, when Toji married her mother, Tsumiki became his stepdaughter and Megumi’s stepsister, but they were never blood relatives. It can be assumed that Toji did not care too much about her, just like he did not care for Megumi.
The rest of this article will focus on Toji Foshiguro and his relationship with his stepdaughter, Tsumiki, which was briefly addressed in the most recent episode of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime. Toji Foshiguro might be a secondary character overall and in terms of his on-screen time, but his private life is nevertheless a very important aspect of the story (especially about his children), which is why we will tell you everything you need to know. Be careful, though, as the article will be filled with spoilers.
Toji was not Tsumiki’s biological father, but he was her stepfather
Just like we start every article detailing Toji’s relationship with his children, we are going to start this one with the story of Toji’s past. Why? Well, Toji’s story is relatively short in the series, and to fully understand everything that has happened around him and his life, we really have to go back to the roots every time since it is all one big chain of events that led to Toji becoming what he is and to his story being what it was. So, let us see what happened.
Toji was raised by the great jujutsu sorcerers of the Zenin family, which is also infamous in the jujutsu world for being hated. Toji left the family at one point because they were brutes, bullies, and snobs who rejected him since he was born with a Heavenly Restriction (despite his other extraordinary abilities). After that, he started gambling and became a jujutsu sorcerer assassin, but he abandoned all of that for love.
He ultimately met a young woman, whose last name was Fushiguro (her first name was never mentioned in the series) and who would become his first wife during this time. When they got married, Toji changed his name from Toji Zenin to Toji Fushiguro. He evidently loved her a lot because he gave up gambling and his job to be with her.
Megumi, the couple’s only child, was born shortly after, and Toji recalls feeling quite happy then. However, the surprising happiness Toji had discovered was short-lived when his wife tragically passed away, leaving him and Megumi alone. As soon as the old Toji returned, Megumi quickly lost his place because Toji had not given him much care.
Later, he met another unnamed woman, and she became his second wife. The woman already had a daughter, Tsumiki, a girl who was just a little older than Megumi and who became Megumi’s stepsister once their parents got married. Shortly after that, their parents disappeared roughly simultaneously, leaving the two siblings to take care of themselves.
After Toji’s passing, Gojo tracked down a young Megumi and visited him at home while he was returning from school. Megumi abruptly interrupted him when he tried to explain the circumstances surrounding his father, telling him that he didn’t care about him and that he understood the main idea.
She then revealed that Tsumiki’s mother vanished about the same time. Gojo then introduced him to his family, the Zenin clan, and asked if he would like to move in with them. Megumi questioned whether or not this would make Tsumiki happy, to which Gojo immediately responded that he was positive it would not.
Megumi then said that he did not want to go to his family, as the happiness of his step-sister was the most important thing to him. Gojo was happy with that answer, and – ironically – so was Toji when he was resurrected a short time later in the story and found out that his son was not aligned with the Zenin clan.
So, as you can see, Toji was not a biological relative of Tsumiki. She had her own unnamed mother and an unidentified father; we didn’t even know her last name before her mother married Toji. Toji was, thus, not related to her, and since her parents obviously weren’t jujutsu sorcerers, this would explain why Tsumiki was actually born without any powers.
(She would go on to receive them later thanks to Kenjaku’s manipulations, but that’s that.) So, Toji was simply getting a step-father, but there was absolutely no biological relationship between them, and their relationship existed simply because there was a legal bond between her biological mother and Toji Fushiguro, i.e., their marriage. So, was Toji, a good father to her?
Seeing how he continued to be an assassin and a gambler and did not care for his biological son, we assume that Toji never developed a bond with Tsumiki. We don’t know why he married her mother, but we can assume it wasn’t out of love. Tsumiki had an even worse relationship with him than Megumi, who basically despised him, whereas Tsumiki seemingly had no sentiments towards him whatsoever, and this should speak enough for itself, as it shows exactly what kind of a step-father he was to her and what kind of a relationship the two of them had.
